Confederate Battle Flag Flies in Missouri Today
Edited on Sun Jun-05-05 11:53 AM by usregimechange

The Confederate battle flag flies below the Missouri state flag and the U.S. flag at the Confederate Memorial Historic Site near Higginsville, Mo., in this March 3, 1997, file photo. Republican Gov. Matt Blunt has ordered the flag, which was ordered taken down in 2003 by Democratic Gov. Bob Holden's administration, to fly Sunday, June 5, 2005.

3. On the same staff as the American and State Flag! Unbelievable.
I would have less objections if it were flown seperately at Confederate Cemetaries but not with the American flag.

Blunt is an idiot I wonder if he will restore the Confederate battle flags in the Capitol.

4. "Union Dixie"...
Suck on this one, Blunt...

Away down South in the land of traitors,
Rattlesnakes and alligators,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
Where cotton's king and men are chattels,
Union boys will win the battles,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.

CHORUS: Then we'll all go down to Dixie,
Away, away,
Each Dixie boy must understand
That he must mind his Uncle Sam,
Away, away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie.
Away, away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie.

I wish I was in Baltimore,
I'd make Secession traitors roar,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
We'll put the traitors all to rout.
I'll bet my boots we'll whip them out,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.

CHORUS: Then they'll wish they were in Dixie,
Away, away,
Each Dixie boy must understand
That he must mind his Uncle Sam,
Away, away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie.
Away, away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie.

Oh, may our Stars and Stripes still wave
Forever o'er the free and brave,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
And let our motto ever be --
"For Union and for Liberty!"
Right away, come away, right away, come away.

CHORUS: Then they'll wish they were in Dixie,
Away, away,
Each Dixie boy must understand
That he must mind his Uncle Sam,
Away, away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie.
Away, away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie.

24. First, I don't think of it as the "slave flag."
But, even if I did, I don't think we should be fighting hateful division with more hateful division.

That song offended me as much as that flag offends you.

10. Agree Clark 08
While reading it I was wondering if the poster couldn't update the words so that maybe Iraqis should have to be crushed by the boots of Uncle Sam too.

How dare they think they can govern themselves.

Why we'll go over there and stomp them to bits if they don't sing our praises.

29. What do you think the soldiers sing going into battle today?
Edited on Wed Jun-08-05 12:06 PM by Toots
What songs do you think went through Clarks head when he went into battle? I think something like Burn Baby Burn or such. I actually found those lyrics refreshing in that they only targeted the traitors and not all Dixie boys. It certainly was not hate filled but more avenging a wrong.

5. Umm... this is at the Confederate Memorial
Duh...

It's not treasonous or racist, in this context. It's historic.

Sorry - there are other things that deserve my outrage. This ain't one of 'em.

11. This honors Confederate war dead
The flag meant something to them that it does not mean to those wave it in their name. Those who wave it in hate do not honor them.

Let this alone, everyone. This honors the sacrifice of people who made a choice that no one alive today can comprehend.

15. I think that it is inappropriate.
Yes, I get that it is a confederate memorial. Then let those who still come to "honor" those who fought to split the country and/or fought for the right to own slaves come and leave little bitty private flags (like amvets do on memorial day). The state shouldn't do it. What private citizens do to commemorate the day is up to them.

Heck, wasn't Missouri "neutral"?

I show my northern roots when I state that I don't get why even up here some folks keep honoring the treasonous efforts to split the country. Of course when I see flags up here - I sorta doubt it is a "southern heritage/pride" thing as some claim. Rather strikes me as trying to make a (ugly/hateful) statement of another kind.

20. I think Missouri was officially nuetral
but most of the rural portions were pro slavery and put forward militias that fought for the slavers. There were big battles between Kansas abolitionist militias and missouri slaver militias here.
The same dynamic exists today to some extent. St. Louis and Kansas City vote progressive, while the rest of the state mostly votes for slave flag waving repukes like Blunt.

22. They were borderliners. Some went one way, some the other
Made for pretty turbulent times and as far as the southern part of the state, housed a lot of riff raff, bushwackers and renegades, as well as soldiers on both sides.

26. Despite having southern ancestors who supported the Confederate cause
I cannot say that what motivated those folks was entirely honorable. I do know that many misunderstandings arise because of contemporary revisionists projecting their brand of ideology onto the issue. Let the goddamn flag fly and see it in its historical context. Yes, it's too bad the Federal and State flags are also there, same flagpole or otherwise. There are too many "thin-skinned" idealogues these days, on both sides. Be wary of emotional upsets trying to rationalize, or denigrate issues. Given the divisiveness of the Nation these days on a multitude of fronts, are we not on a parallel of sorts with the years before, during, and after the Civil War?

Just what does it take for families and neighbors to turn against one another?

17. Also
I think we need to remove the appalling symbols of fascism that have found their way into our Congress.

I am not concerned with when and how they got there or who's responsible. I am only concerned with having symbols of fascism removed from our Congress.

Roman fasces are the symbol of fascism and they have NO business being in our Congress. (they are the two symbols on either side of our flag)

And in this pic, we also see a fascist mace in the left foreground. (I know its hard to see but note that the mace's staff is the same bundle of rods tied with a leather strap)

And in this pic we see both these symbols on this stamp

And usregimechange, I am with you all the way.. That racist flag needs to be removed from that flag-pole. IMO, it needs to be taken down, burned and stomped on.

19. Blunt is a real little creep
He was secretary of state and certified his own election in November. Of course, his dad is rep. Roy Blunt. They took out the dem gov in the primaries. Missouri has open primaries and the repubs all voted in the dem primary against the incumbent. it was stupid of the missouri dems to put forward a primary challenger, a weak candidate named McCaskill.

I was arguing with a redneck here recently about the the confederate flag. He said, well, it's our heritage and if the blacks don't like it they can move.
I said, well, it's their heritage as well, and it means slavery.
It is so pathetic how the south hangs on to symbols of the confederacy as if there was ever a shred of honor in a system built on human slavery.

21. He's a little suckup
I'm really somewhat neutral about the confederate flag thing. It always represented the south to me, not slavery. I'm sure I probably had relatives who fought on both sides. Of course, now people speak out about it being all about slavery, so I feel theres no reason to fly it, if it hurts peoples consciousness.

I think Blunt did this just to suck up to the people who mostly reflect the dark side of the south. He's a punk neocon of the worst kind.

I can't remember the official tally, but i can't imagine a dem without the power of incumbency beating a repub legacy with the power to certify his own election.
