VIDEO of Olbermann crushing RW spin re Kerry's DSM Statement - sweet!
Edited on Tue Jun-07-05 12:21 AM by Nothing Without Hope
This short video clip is from Keith Olbermann's Monday night (June 6) broadcast, courtesy of our wonderful dzika. It not only very clearly lays out what John Kerry actually said last Wednesday about the Downing Street Minutes, it totally demolishes the RW spin, which over the weekend had suddenly mushroomed into a claim that Kerry was calling for impeachment. Amazingly, Keith makes the manufactured RW spin a part of the news story, which it actually is, and proceeds to crush the lies.

It's very, very sweet to see a TV newsman actually digging past the RW spin for the truth so vigorously. Don't miss it. The false claims, it turns out, originated from NewsMax (the "failed presidential candidate Kerry" lead-in was a clue :sarcasm: ) and Al-Jazeera.

Real Media Format:

And thanks again, dzika! :hi:

(Since people seem to be voting for this thread rather than its originator, I've edited to add the video links directly. The thread where they were initially posted in a reply (#43) contains good information and comments. It's here:

62. When ABC - CBS - NBC still refuse to cover DSM story it speaks
volumes of the "control and restraint" deeply installed in corporate media.

Freedom of the press, what a crock of sh*t! -- sooo... thats why we can't accept the Blair-Bush statement made yesterday as the official response regarding DSM -- How long did Watergate take before it got off the ground? --12-15 months? -- no surrender baby!!

Isn't it wonderful to actually see a TV newsman NOT taking the RW spin as gospel and daring to say it is not true? You KNOW he's going to be buried in freeper outrage, so let's counterbalance that with some well-deserved support. FEEDBACK MATTERS. If Keith can show his editor/bosses many enthusiastically supportive emails, he will have a stronger position for speaking the truth to power next time.

If we can get even PART of the truth about this Administration out to the US people, they are TOAST.

6. Good for Olbermann...I posted here a few times...
...in response to the article that began "Failed presidential candidate John Kerry....." .... "impeachment" that Kerry NEVER said impeachment - never mentioned it. Conyers and Nader did, but not Kerry. This same article called the DSM an "impeachment memo".

I'm glad to see a person with INTEGRITY in the media pointing this out.

What a load of crap that article was. It just chaps my ass that shit like that is allowed to be publicized without question yet a legitimate story like the one from NEWSEEK (RE: Koran abuse) is slammed by the reich as untrue or flawed. Turns out that story IS TRUE. Source iffy (and undoubtedly a Rovian plant to discredit the story and newsweek) but the damn story was TRUE.

In stark contrast, the SHIT reported in that NEWSMAX article about Kerry was just that: PURE SHIT - and it was swallowed whole without question. Why people allow themselves to be spoon fed this type of defecate without question is beyond me.

I think it's about time all of us, Olbermann, Conyers and anyone else start calling the media on this "slinging shit and calling it 'news'" problem we seem to have here. Olbermann has actually given me some hope here. So has Conyers. Bless 'em both.

the weekend intervened. I'm hoping that the next time this happens, it's on a day when he can rebut it on his show more quickly. In the meantime, of course, the other corporate news media spokespeople let the RW spin on unimpeded.

Keith addressed this issue as soon as he could. Too bad he's the ONLY corporate media newsperson who did, and he couldn't do it any earler.

19. yes, that's a lesson that seems to be fogotten: GO TO THE SOURCE
FOR THE TRUTH. Rumors, spin, and shoddy or deliberately misleading reports abound. We know it. And yet when an exciting rumor comes, off go too many of us.

It happened with the Edwards/Biden/Dean incident too. Edwards put out a statement on this (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x1833416), but a lot of divisive damage has been done already. Many DU threads, and many people who still believe the false rumors.

For this Kerry story that Keith debunked, so many people are hoping that impeachment proceedings really will start, they are too willing to believe the rumor.

25. You won't get an argument on that from me!
I do think we should email him to express support for stories like this. It gives him some leverage with his editors/bosses when he wants to push to tell more truth and with less poof. Besides, he needs cheering and support in any case - he's in a pressure cooker and telling the truth to power is not a safe career path these days. Plus, he needs to hear that it does make a difference. It's got to be extremely frustrating for him, but he keeps working at it.

Nothing without hope:

In case you missed it, Keith Olbermann (among others last night) stated that it was first Al Jazeera that reported that Kerry was going to bring up impeachment and then Newsmax reporting on what AL Jazeera was saying.

Your problem is with Al Jazeera and what Kerry did, or did not, tell them; not with "right wing" news or with Newsmax.

I suggest you contact Al Jazeera and beg them to act more responsibly.

Talk about skewed thinking! We're supposed to address NewsMax's spin by begging Al Jazeera to be more accurate? I thought you guys might enjoy this one.

Olbermann Debunks Right-Wing Spin on Kerry’s Downing Street Memo Statement
7 June 2005

Keith Olbermann aired a brief debunking tonight on the conservative spin on John Kerry’s Downing Street Memo statement last week in the Standard Times, which Ron posted here last Thursday. Newsmax picked up the story early Friday morning and twisted it into a claim that Kerry would call for impeachment. The Conservative Voice quickly rallied to the right-wing spin machine and posted their version, which Ron debunked here first on Friday.

Watch Keith Olbermann’s debunking here: Real Media Format or Windows Media Format

Spin, Spin, Spin and How the Left Helps the Right…

Most disturbing in this classic case of spin is how the left-wing helped the right-wing in perpetuating these untruths. In his statement to the Standard Times, Kerry said that the Downing Street Memo, though not being discussed by the media, had not been missed by the internet. No truer words could have been spoken by Senator Kerry, as the internet took off with his statement to the Standard Times, and blogs and forums, right and left had a heyday with their own versions of the statement.

35. Here's the link to the Conservative Voice post pushing the false rumor
that Kerry was going for impeachment. This post has the title "Kerry To Push For Bush Impeachment":
http://www.theconservativevoice.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=6057

Moral to all of us - before believing a rumor posted at a questionable site, GO TO A RELIABLE SOURCE AND GET CONFIRMATION. In these days of news spin, finding the truth requires some discipline and effort. NewsMax and the other sites which went with the rumor, both left- and right-wing, didn't bother. The result is confusion and distortion which is difficult to clear up after the fact.

Despite Keith Olbermann's debunking yesterday, I'm sure a lot of people will continue to talk about how Kerry "will call for impeachment."

This is good to hear. Now, if more newswriters and -casters join Keith in trying to get at the TRUTH for a change, maybe these criminals who have stolen our country and traumatized the world for their looting schemes will FINALLY start to be held accountable. Once their lies begin to unravel, I think the truth movement will pick up momentum. People are starved for it, and once their culpability in one horrible scandal is demonstrated, there will be less resistance to seeing what they have done in others.

50. This is not the first time Olbermann has spoken about the DSM:
Here is VIDEO CLIP from a couple of weeks back when he introduced the DSM and had Rep. Slaughter on for an interview:

56. Keith may start the ball rolling on this "Downing memo" issue
as far as corporate media recognizing the beginning of Bush's downfall...

59. Begala also broke the story May 13 on CNN/Crossfire - watch VIDEO CLIP:
This VIDEO CLIP is short but powerful - Begala was clearly outraged at the DSM's contents and makes no bones about it. His emotions are obvious and honest:

But that was before the apparent order for suppression on this topic came down from the WH. But Begala should have credit for his honesty and courage in what he said on Crossfire.

54. Please consider emailing your thanks to him. It might give some extra
flexibility from his bosses/editors to continue telling the serious truth if he gets enough supportive email when he does.

60. Thank you, bleever
I like your work and spirit too - I DU BELIEVE. The stakes are far too high for the spoiled luxury of cynicism, and it's something I work hard to avoid in any case. At times it's so hard to avoid slipping down that dark, too-easy slope, and then the support of the DU community and my friends here in particular are a great help.

Together we are stronger in every way. The truth and people's hopes are on OUR side, and we WILL prevail over the criminals.
:grouphug:

And you've made me laugh out loud on those KOEB threads so many times, with that off-the-wall, whimsical - but never malicious - humor. In addition to your "serious" work, thank you so much for sharing that imaginative whimsy and the helpless laughter it causes.

64. Keith Olbermann BLOGS on the Kerry/DSM incident, makes good points:

Kerry on impeachment (Keith Olbermann)

(snip)

The words of the Democrats' 2004 standard-bearer?: "When I go back (to Washington) on Monday, I am going to raise the issue. I think (the memo) is a stunning, unbelievably simple and understandable statement of the truth..."

(snip)

By Saturday, those quotes, and the original New Bedford story, had been transmuted by a series of foreign and conservative websites into an article that included the line: "Failed presidential candidate Kerry advised that he will begin the presentation of his case for President Bush's impeachment to Congress, on Monday."

Blogs and websites pulsated with the news: Kerry was going to call for the impeachment of President Bush! My inbox pulsated with the missives of angry conservatives ("you're covering up Kerry's traitorous comment") and angry liberals ("corporate lapdog! Why didn't you cover this? Do your job!").

Once again, the first law of the Non-Mainstream Media was being ignored. Be suspicious of everything you read on the internet, not just those things with which you most agree, or about which you live in the greatest fear.

(snip)

Keith points out the striking irony of venues at opposite ends of the political spectrum - Al Jazeera and NewMax and Conservative Voice - ALL pushing a false rumor. One group WANTED it to be true and the other WANTED it to be false. Both were very excited and both were wrong.
