Will Hillary as the nominee give us McCain as the opponent?
Edited on Wed Jun-08-05 09:45 AM by Skwmom
Many have stated that there is no way that McCain will make it through the Republican primary. However, if Hillary is the Democratic nominee, do you think the Republicans could nominate McCain on the basis of the "he is the only one who can beat Hillary" meme?

Someone posted on another thread that Tweety said the MSM loves McCain. Maybe this is another reason they are pushing Hillary so hard (to help McCain win the Republican primary).

1. Time to Quit this line of Speculation.
Hillary will not be the nominee. She's too politically savvy for that trap and will support a nominee that has a better shot at success.

2. She would have to put aside her own ambition, putting the
good of the country ahead of her own desire for power. She didn't vote for the IWR for nothing.

She's a politician. They ALL want to be president.

15. Yes, too savvy!
You think she doesn't know what a lightening rod she would be and how difficult it would be for her to win? She knows all this and more.

16. So was her husband
Does Hillary strike you as the kind of person who would let her alleged faults keep her from running. She has polls that show that she can win.

Hillary! declaring in late 2007 is the safest bet in politics right now.

Sounds like you're playing devil's advocate and trying to stir up something.

I'll take that bet, BTW.

5. I have said over and over again that the only thing that will get cons to
back McCain is if Hillary is the Dem nominee. I don't know if it will be enough to get McCain through the primaries though.

6. Anyone could beat Hillary..
Hillary will divide this country like nothing you have seen before. The pure hate I hear from Republicans at the mere mention of Hillary's name is amazing. It's even stronger then their dislike of Kerry.

McCain might have a problem winning his parties ticket unless Bush backs him 100% and no one else.

As for the us...I'll let the media cry Hillary, Hillary, Hillary and wait to see who really comes out to run and listen to them before making any judgments.

In the end...it will depend on Iowa and NH...I'ld wait and see...it's all too earily to call anything at this point.

10. McCain Ain't Gonna Get Nominated
The fundies now believe they own the GOP, and there is no way they will stand idly by while someone as unreliable as McCain gets the ring. They want it all, and McCain is far too independent for their totalitarian taste.

Besides, ideologues are rarely that pragmatic.

My take is we're going to be running against some thoroughly unpleasant fellow such as the Kitty Killer, and whoever we nominate will stand a damned good chance of getting elected.

11. I don't think the Republicans are going to make it that easy.
Furthermore, I think the fundies hatred of Clinton will overcome their dislike of McCain.

12. Bingo!
If Hillary gets the nomination, they can paint her as a radical liberal in moderate clothing and run McCain as the true moderate (he was even courted by Kerry for the VP nominee, which is true).

The fundies, although they may not turn out in numbers like they might for cat killer, would still vote for McCain. I have a feeling that most moderates would also be drawn towards McCain as well.

In any case, I think McCain spells bad news for Dems in '08.

18. At this point, I think just about anything will lead to McCain '08.
My guess is: McCain/Thomspon.
