Are the Republicans going to deny they're white and Christian?
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/6/8/11353/50365

Dean accomplishes a few goals here:

1. He knocks the Republicans off message by forcing them to react to his attacks. Better yet, these "attacks" are just slightly hyperbolized truths. Let's get Denny Hastert on camera and have him deny he's white.

2. Dean uses hyperbole to divorce Republican voters from the Republican Party. "Hey, I work for a living and I'm not a whacko. Maybe I'm not so well represented as part of a country club political party."

Those who are most offended by the remark are not people who would vote for a Democrat even if it were an election pairing Jesus (D-Galilee) vs. Satan (R-Crawford). Of course there are gay and black and Latino Republicans, and of course many who have voted Republican work for a living, but the hyperbole reinforces the notion that they just might be the chicken voting for Colonel Sanders.

3. Considering that they got Powell out of government...
I guess that means they can only push Condi.

4. I have a lot of acquaintences in Ohio
who are not "white", Hindi and definitely Republican. Broad brushism is almost always a disservice to real debate. Whether its being wielded by our side or the other.

6. Dean is playing by the rules set in motion by this ruling party,
In my opinion, we have needed such actions from one of the Dem leaders for some time. Full steam ahead and take no prisoners is the only way to beat them at their own game..

7. I disagree and point to comment #5
Our goal is to develop a winning formula to put Democrats back into majorities. Yes, we need to draw clear distinctions and stand firm and fight. No, we don't need to highlight the wrong distinctions (those cloud the message.)

Some of these recent Dean comments are targeted only at the left of the Democratic base -- they aren't going to be received well by the broader middle. And, yes, they have been mischaracterized by the media but Dean is a smart man. He should know how the media is going to stir up this nonsense. What's happened. Finally, we get some public noise on DSM and it is partially eclipsed by these unnecessary Dem infighting stories.

Pelosi, Edwards, Biden and Richardson, et al should basically shut up or finesse their answers to these idiotic questions and Gov Dean needs to consider more carefully how his pronouncements can be used to misdirect the public.

My $.02

8. Yes I agree with you. Dean needs to knock off the broad brush strokes
and just go after the Administration and cronies. It wouldn't hurt to keep after Delay and other Congressmen as long as he is specific. He should not stop the attack though.

5. I fear they will construe this as an admission that Dems are not Xtians
My concern about this remark is that it will be construed as an admission that the Democrats are not the party of Christians.

Now nobody can maintain a white-separatist or white-supremacist position and be taken seriously, but Christians can and do maintain that they are the only ones who have "the truth", and they WANT to be the only ones in power.

The only good that could come of this remark is that Republicans who are non-Christians, who have been increasingly creeped out by the Evangelical Fanatics who have taken control of their party, will speak out and against the Evangelical coup and try to re-establish control of the party and identify the Republicans as a secular party with many Christian constituents (which is how it SHOULD be). If they did this, it would enrage the xtians, who have that perpetual persecution complex, and they would wail and gnash their teeth and strike out in anger and intolerance at these moderate Republicans.

I wish Dean had left out the "white" part, because it is all too easy to parade Condi and Colin and Alberto "Speedy Execution" Gonzales as examples of non-white leaders in the Republican Party.
