Anne Northup (R-KY) "won voice-vote approval" for an amendment that would "prohibit the Bush administration from negotiating trade agreements that thwart imports of lower-cost medicines, a provision included in recent accords at the behest of pharmaceutical companies." Being hailed as "a symbolic victory over drug companies ... as well as the House leadership and the Bush administration," Northup's amendment "blocks U.S. trade negotiators from adding the drug-industry friendly language to future trade deals." House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX), who himself has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in political contributions from the pharmaceutical industry, stated that "'somehow' Northup's provision would be dropped."
