Deans anti-GOP Rhetoric and Dem's Response I believe Is part of a strategy
Dean gets to dish the red meat to the base with his anti-GOP rhetoric, the Base eats it up as well as the media. The democratic representatives get to ever slightly distance themselves from Dean's comments to appeal to moderates.

Meanwhile Deans comments get mucho air time from the Corporate media, and the Dem representatives get to show their pretty faces on the talking head shows.

Would I prefer they all be talking about DSM? yes, but I doubt the corporate media would play it on the boob tube.

1. the media would not ignore memo talk if Dean used "the L word"
Or the "I" word.

If Dean REALLY wants to give us red meat, he can talk about the memo- not the race or religion of voters.

As it is, he has yet to utter a single, solitary sentence about "the memo."

5. Who is this "Conyers fella" -and when does he get TV air-time???
And when do newspapers hang on his every controversial statement?

Red State swing voters KNOW who Howard Dean is. TV shows give Dean airtime.

Not so with Conyers. See the difference?

9. ??????????????
I want ALL Democrats, front and center, talking about the memo.

Dean is the one who can get on TV as opposed to Conyers.

That is all I'm saying.

14. Not hardly. And NEVER on TV where others besides the base see it.
Kennedy "released" a blurb on his website- whoopty do.

Kerry said somthing or other about mentioning it eventually. His staff also sent an email to low traffic Boston Newspaper confirming this.

Russ Feingold said he would mention it to Blair over a private breakfast.

But whenever any of the Top DEMs get in front of a microphone or Camera, they become silent.

I repsectfully disagree- DEMs on TV have been talking about virtually every other issue escept the memo.

19. Same with Conyers- But not so with Dean, Kerry, Hillary, Obama, etc.
That was kind of my point.

DEAN should be talking about this.

7. Having the party chairman mention DSM
gives it a larger sense of legitimacy and more possible media coverage.

11. Bizarro world we live in
Mark Mehlman can accuse us of tying to ban the bible, and nboody says a thing

Dean calls repukes (correctly mind you) what they are, and democrats are all over it.

By the way, The Minority Chairman of the Judiciary Committee has legitimacy, but nothing will happen until we get the media... or rather it is happenign IN SPITE of the media

15. Melman also LIED when asked about the memo.
he said the 9-11 commission had discredited the memo.

Dean or any other Top DEM has yet to go on TV and call him a "liar."

18. You are wrong. Russert's (R) job is to protect Bush and Jack Welch.
Edited on Thu Jun-09-05 03:55 PM by Dr Fate
Tim russert (R) only brought up the memo at all to retain legitimacy as a "journalist."

DEM's should be doing exactly what Top Republicans are doing-going on TV in a unified manner and criticising the opposing party's chairman for his statements.

3. This is true.
All of GD is praising him for his comments on the GOP, meanwhile, where has he mentioned the Downing Street Memo? I think he's doing a good job in general, but think he should be focusing on issues the GOP wants to forget, rather than throwing out soundbites.

4. Except the media is using this manufactured crisis to ignore DSMinutes.
Send money to the DNC to support Dean, but use your energy and voice to keep the DSM story up front.

8. But Dean is the one ignoring it.
At least the media has mentioned it once or twice.

Dean should be talking about the memo 3 weeks ago. Where is he TODAY on the memo?

He and Reid were in front of cameras today, but both REFUSED to list it as an issue that Republicans are ignoring.

12. I have no answer why Dean isn't mentioning the DSM. I was hoping
he would use the controversy and subsequent face time to hammer the WH and the media's capitulation.

10. I'm not sure I would call it a strategy
Edited on Thu Jun-09-05 03:39 PM by KurtNYC
It is not like Dean came out and said 'here is the new slogan for the DNC: Republicans are pretty much a white, Christian party.' This is the GOP screwing up. They got a tape of Dean and this was most inflammatory thing on it (?!)

Last year Michael Moore called * a deserter during his intro for Wes Clark. The GOP had a hissy fit and kept repeating Moore's words. They made a huge issue out of something that entrenched Dem politicians wouldn't or, at least, didn't say. They amplified Moore's message. I think this is similar.

It will be a strategy when we do something like this: 1) Bait them with one of these soundbites - something that is true but that they don't like to admit. 2) let them cry and demand an apology (hopefully we can keep Lieberman from doing this part for them) 3) as soon as this little battle becomes the focus of national attention hit them with a bigger truth.

Using the DSM for example step one would be to have some Dem say that * lied about not having plans for attacking Iraq 2) they demand apology 3) have a press conference which will seem to be one where you are going to apologize BUT release the Downing Street Minutes at the press conference instead!
