Probe into charges the White House altered government documents |
|
to cast doubt on the generally-accepted scientific consensus about the causes and effects of global warming. Philip Cooney, chief of staff for the White House Council on Environmental Quality, allegedly subtly altered documents, adding qualifiers like "significant and fundamental" before the word "uncertainties" to give the impression of considerable doubt about the findings. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20050609/sc_afp/usenvironmentclimate_050609202053;_ylt=AtAyFG5sZat8EJBUVOW7KrprAlMA;_ylu=X3oDMTBiMW04NW9mBHNlY

I've run into this too many times to count. As an internal auditor at two Fortune 50 corporations, there was always the pressure but rarely the accommodation when it came to audit reports. But for some of the more 'sensitive' scientific reports at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (in Richland, Washington), the "windage" was fucking ENORMOUS. One study in particular, having to do with the infiltration of toxic nuclear waste into the groundwater (and Columbia River), was hit with a Category 5 political hurricane. Not only were the statistical assumptions "revised" at least three times (to a highly improbable degree), the report was scrubbed so hard by bureaucratic spin-meisters it finally bore no resemblance to the science. Anyone that fights it gets canned eventually and has their scientific career truncated. (There ain't too many places scientists in some disciplines can find work.)
