Why isn't Bush's comment about Condi and Africa "racist?"
When Bush and Blair spoke, Bush made it a point to single out Condi Rice...she wanted to be sure that he's take care of Africa.

I'm sorry, this bothered me the first time I saw it, and it's bothered me even more each time since. Dean is getting hammered for telling the 100% truth that the repubican party is mostly white Christians -- 82%. They're calling it everything from racist, anti-religion, you name it...

But what about Bush's comment? To me it is sooooo "white country club" to point out the black person in the room when you comment on Africa. Kinda of like saying, "Oh, I'm not racist...some of my best friends are negroes!"

Anyone else left with that impression?

1. It bothers me that he calls the Sec. of State by a nickname. Condi??
Are yuo kidding?
Would President Clinto ever had said " When I was talking to Maddy'?

And yes, I do agree with you about the nature of the comment.

10. Yes, bothers me.
Bush is an embarrassment.

He has no idea how to behave in formal settings, he acts like the world is his frat house.

I don't think it is sexism or racism, just idiotism. He is an equal opportunity rube.

2. I don't think that was his intention.
I think he means that one of her priorities was Africa, and that she wanted to make sure he focused on it.

The fact that she is Black is just a coincidence... that was my feeling anyways. Not to mention the fact that the whole story was probably bullshit.

3. Prolly
I was more taken aback by his calling Dr. Rice "Condi." The paternalism just blasted out of my TV screen when he was saying that. Got all over the cat, too.

5. Someone else might have been referring to her status as Secy of State
with that comment, but somehow, with the kind of elitism that the Bushes feel towards the rest of the world, I think you may be onto something.

Poppy Bush apparently made some disparaging comment about Paul Wellstone when he first saw him drive up to Washington with his bus and supporters. I wish I could remember the exact quote, but it was really classist.

6. I thought the same thing...
Definitely one of those "many of my best friends are black" moments. But to be fair, how many African Americans are still in the Bush Administration?

... Shrub said in his bumbling way words to the effect that, "....before my meeting with Tony (Blair), Condi told me to be sure that we take care of Africa. And that's what I plan to do."

I thought that the sheepish look on Condi's face was not about racism, but rather all about the double meaning to Bush's statement. Sure, Blair came to see Bush about securing $58 billion in new aid for Africa. Bush comes up with a measly $748 million or about 1.3% of what was called for, so Bush's plan is really to take care of Africa in the PNAC sense, by just letting Africa depopulate naturally. Of course Condi Rice has no objection whatever to that policy and thus that priceless look and scrunching down in her chair almost to cover up her heritage.

Condi Rice abandoned her heritage roots at a very early age in life and could really care less about the plight of African Americans and African native populations. That is a fact!

that would be "nigg-ras"

now that Colin quit his job as lawn jockey, only Condi is left to step and fetchit.

Condi is just as grotesque, in her own way, a caricature of black trying to be white as Michael Jackson is, with his bleached skin, straightened hair and dozens of nose jobs.

I don't know who makes me more angry, the bushturd or Condi.

Edited on Fri Jun-10-05 12:51 PM by DesertedRose
"To me it is sooooo "white country club" to point out the black person in the room when you comment on Africa."

The MSM does this too...sends the black reporter to cover "black" stories...the hispanic reporter to cover "hispanic" stories, etc. As if they aren't capable of covering anything else. And as if whites don't want to get their hands dirty with stories about minorities.
