Nice letter to the San Diego Union Tribune
June 10, 2005

Congratulations to all of the nation's conservatives who have fought so valiantly to keep big government out of our lives.

Let's see. The feds now control the rights of states to give medicinal marijuana to sick and dying people, even if their own doctors prescribe it. No big surprise; they just tried to tell a husband what to do with his clinically dead wife.

They keep the price of prescription drugs the highest in the world at the behest of the pharmaceutical industry by blocking state efforts to import the same drugs at a reduced rate.

They disregard the rights of states to decide what to do with their natural resources by invading their sovereignty to drill for oil while making no effort to conserve it.

They make sure that everyone has as many assault weapons as the gun industry can make even though the violence in our country is a national disgrace.

They wage war through the use of lies and deception and funnel the profits to their corporate friends.

They refuse to control campaign contributions so that only the wealthiest have a say in government.

They protect big businesses by cutting their taxes instead of ensuring that our children have medical care.

They pass laws putting forth a unified belief in only one religion without any thought that this is a diverse country that has always believed in freedom of religion and that there should be a wall between the government and religion.

What happened to the country I was always proud of?

TOM ADLER
San Diego

3. If you voted for Bush, you voted for war.
That's what happened to our country. Too many people in this country are, in their deepest of hearts, thirsty for blood. Other peoples' blood. They love to watch bombs flying -- as long as it's on CNN and not in their own backyards.

I saw that bloodlust on the eve of launching the Iraq war. Folks in a local bar were gathered around the TV set, cheering as the first explosions appeared. They were ecstatic.

They scared the hell out of me.

I'm sorry, but there are times when I think this country deserves to go the way of the Roman Empire.
