MyDD, Obama: "A More Perfect Union" |
|
" place where destiny was not a destination, but a journey to be shared and shaped and remade by people who had the gall, the temerity to believe that, against all odds, they could form "a more perfect union" on this new frontier. And as people around the world began to hear the tale of the lowly colonists who overthrew an empire for the sake of an idea, they started to come. Across oceans and the ages, they settled in Boston and Charleston, Chicago and St. Louis, Kalamazoo and Galesburg, to try and build their own American Dream. This collective dream moved forward imperfectly--it was scarred by our treatment of native peoples, betrayed by slavery, clouded by the subjugation of women, shaken by war and depression. And yet, brick by brick, rail by rail, calloused hand by calloused hand, people kept dreaming, and building, and working, and marching, and petitioning their government, until they made America a land where the question of our place in history is not answered for us. It's answered by us."

Let's all rag on him now.

1. Obama represents those who want us to feel good or hopeful. |

2. he talks pretty about overthrowing empire but ... |
|
then he says things like this on the Senate floor during the Bolton hearings: "I would say the policy has been less about patience and more about paralysis--a dangerous situation for a nation such as Iran that is developing nuclear weapons, is a state sponsor of terrorism, and is meddling in Iraq."
what does this quote from Obama reflect about his understanding of the US role in spreading bush's empire to the Middle East ... the point is not whether the facts he stated are right or they're not ... but he talks about Iran meddling in Iraq (based on what?) but fails to talk about the giant injustice of the US "meddling" in Iraq ...
Obama's quote offers little more than the beating of war drums ... where are his insights on the path to PEACE??? where is his recent evidence of state-sponsored terrorism? where are his pretty words about the treatment of the "native people" of Iraq by the US government ...
Obama's speech quoted in the base post is great ... the words are inspirational and call us to a higher ideal ... such is not the same with Obama's remarks about Iran and the spreading of American empire throughout the Middle East ...

5. Obama is a stuffed shirt |
|
It's funny how easily people will project their desires into attributes that another person does not posess. Wasn't Obama right up there bashing Dean the other day? Doesn't he regularly vote with the Bush Cabal?

4. Beautiful words. And I will take your invitation to rag on him: |
|
- Second vote as a Senator was to confirm Dr. Rice - Voted to confirm Negroponte - Voted with Republicans to restrict Americans rights to collectively file class action lawsuits - During the bankruptcy debate, he assisted in voting down a Democratic amendment which would have capped the outrageous interest rates credit card companies can charge. - Breaks with the CBC and voted to end debate on Priscilla Owen. (Boxer, Kerry and Kennedy opposed.) - Accuses Dean of "using religion to divde people" and calling for him to "tone it down".
Inspirational speeches are great but there is also a voting record.

7. Absolutely. Words are meaningless if your actions don't match. |
