Gov Dean put conservatives on bench to get longer sentences?
Does anybody in Vermont know anything else about the judges he put on the bench?

<snip>

He also appointed judges whom he considered conservative, even though their stiff sentences resulted in overcrowded jails. "I've put much more conservative people on the bench because I've wanted longer sentences, and I'm getting those longer sentences," he said in 1997

<snip>

Still, in that same news conference, he seemed inclined to support a pre-emptive attack on Iraq, though only if Mr. Bush provided evidence that Saddam Hussein had unconventional weapons and only if Mr. Bush acknowledged that the war might take as long as 10 years.

When a reporter noted to Dr. Dean that other countries had nuclear weapons but the United States did not attack them, Dr. Dean replied, "Other countries do not have leaders like Saddam — and possess nuclear weapons and have leaders like Saddam Hussein, who clearly is a great dangerous, unpredictable person."

3. Dean praised Bush, it's in this same article
<snip>

The time was 1998, when Republicans were on the verge of impeaching President Bill Clinton. Howard Dean, then governor of Vermont, was unhappy with Mr. Clinton and disgusted with the Republican leadership in Washington. But he did find a Republican to admire.

"George W. Bush did very well," Dr. Dean said of the Texas governor, who had just been elected to a second term. "Why? Because he is talking about his issues in a civil, thoughtful way in getting his point across."

Let him come on an prove himself before you push out loyal dems for clark who has no new ideas and wants with his buddy moore to talk about a war over 40 years ago. Who cares about viet nam? Many other issues.

5. Here is what I have:

Some lowlights...

"Just two years ago Dean tried to prevent Appel from accepting a $150,000 federal grant aimed at assisting defendants with mental disabilities. For Dean to block a government agency from receiving federal money was unusual in itself. But Dean’s openly expressed bias against criminal defendants provided a partial explanation..."

"Dean has made no secret of his belief that the justice system gives all the breaks to defendants. Consequently, during the 1990s, state’s attorneys, police, and corrections all received budget increases vastly exceeding increases enjoyed by the defender general’s office. That meant the state’s attorneys were able to round up ever increasing numbers of criminal defendants, but the public defenders were not given comparable resources to respond..."

"Several of Dean's judicial appointments are now awaiting hearings before the United States Second Circuit Court in New York City. The Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Freedom of Expression (www.tjcenter.org) and two other law firms have filed briefs against these justices. They are being accused of violating a number of federal rights including; the First Amendment, Right to Counsel, Double Jeopardy, and Due Process..."

6. Folks, this is a real dead end
I can't tell you how many hours I spent aruging with my wife when she worked for a victim's rights group, or how much I loathe proscutors.

But, at the end of the day, we need to attack the racism in society and the economic conditions that create the deluge or criminal defendants.

Sticking up for them after they've stuck up the liquor store is the No. 1 way to lose elections.

We need to be about creating communities where sticking up the liquor store isn't a viable career option, and where the liquor store isn't the community business institution with the most money.

Yes, we need to combat the racism in our justice system. Yes, we need to preserve our constitutional rights. But this is a losing issue as couched in this thread
