Calling George Soros: Dems need to seed next generation of progressives

Next Generation of Conservatives (By the Dormful)

By JASON DePARLE

WASHINGTON, June 13 - They are young and bright and ardently right. They tack Ronald Reagan calendars on their cubicle walls and devote brown bag lunches to the free market theories of Friedrich von Hayek. They come from 51 colleges and 28 states, calling for low taxes, strong defense and dorm rooms with a view.

And let's get one thing straight: they're not here to run the copying machine.

The summer interns of the Heritage Foundation have arrived, forming an elite corps inside the capital's premier conservative research group. The 64 interns are each paid a 10-week stipend of $2,500, and about half are housed in a subsidized dorm at the group's headquarters, complete with a fitness room.

Unusual in its size (and in its walk-in closets), the program, on which Heritage spends $570,000 a year, is both a coveted spot on the young conservative circuit and an example of the care the movement takes to cultivate its young.

<>It is an alternative with few rivals. The Brookings Institution, a centrist group more than 50 years older than Heritage, has no paid interns. Neither does the Progressive Policy Institute, which promotes a centrist version of liberalism. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a premier antipoverty group, has 10 paid interns. People for the American Way, a bulwark of Beltway liberalism, has 40 - but no dorm.

1. In another era, they were called Hitler Youth.

And I really don't want to hear any shit from anyone about how comparisons to Hitler are non-productive.

The sooner this country realizes how close we're becoming to to what the Nazis were, (not just totalitarianism -- NAZIS), the more people will become alarmed, stand up, and do... something/anything to fight it.

Every time I've posted the term Nazi on DU, most of the responses were in the vein of "They're fascists, not Nazis. Don't go overboard, or you'll drive people away." Either that, or some dumb theory that I've read (don't recall the name) that the instant you've used the term Nazi, you've lost the argument. A rationale like that is worthy of Josef Goebbels or Karl Rove.

Well if you don't buy the term Nazi now, When? And if you don't think it's past time to fight back against them, if not now, When?

It's really going to be difficult to oppose them from a cell in Gitmo, Abu Ghraib, or who knows how many other places in the gulag they've built. (And yes, I use the term "gulag" without apology. The only difference between Stalin's gulag and the BushCo gulag is size, not intent.)

Americans, please. Wake the fuck up.

2. Stipend?
Lordy, those are PAID EMPLOYEES, no other definition, they're just working cheap.

The left really needs to get some think tanks of its own going. I sincerely hope Soros starts doling out money the way Scaife did back in the 70s. He's getting on in years, and he sure as hell can't take it with him. If he wants to do damage to the right, he's got to start now.
