John Kerry, Following Through on the DSM
John Kerry, Following Through on the DSM
14 June 2005

Ron posted a quip earlier from the Washington Post that “Kerry is circulating a letter about the memo among Democratic senators before sending it to Bush.”

I just received this a short time ago from a Kerry confidant :

“Kerry has been enlisting other Senators to sign onto a letter to the intelligence committee seeking answers to the Downing Street Memo so Americans can trust that security decisions are driven by facts and responsible intelligence, not by political calculation.”

Raw Story apparently received the same statement from Kerry confidants but also claimed that the statement came “after nearly two weeks of silence from the senator,” implying that by not speaking to the media that Kerry has been silent, when indeed he has not been silent, since he has been talking to his Senate colleagues.

With John Kerry, silence does not mean he has been inactive. Au Contraire… John Kerry has been doing what John Kerry does best… following through in a pragmatic manner on this issue to actually get something achieved.

In addition, John Kerry has had a full schedule in the past week, one set not by Democrats but by the Republicans who control the Senate.

In the last week, John Kerry has joined a bipartisan coalition fighting to stop SBA from gutting rural small business loans, he has joined with Henry Waxman to demand an investigation into the doctored Global Warming reports and he’s been dealing with an economic disaster in MA due to the Red Tide outbreak. Today, Kerry attended the CAFTA hearing and offered an amendment and offered an amendment on the Energy bill as well.

No doubt, we’ll hear more from John Kerry regarding the DSM soon. As his “confidant” reports he has been actively pursuing the DSM issue, while dealing with other pressing issues in the Senate as well. LUTD is staying on top of this story and we’ll keep you posted.

2. The minutes have been public for SIX WEEKS. WTF is he waiting for?!?
he sold us out on Nov. 3rd and by his silence he is complicit. I say this not just re:JK but anyone who has a position of influence and power that isn't SCREAMING IMPEACHMENT. Ok now go ahead and flame me with all the talk of secret plans and strategies or how he is constrained by outside factors and any other such bullshit.

hope its theraputic for you.

They stole the election and he couldn't prove it, so he's the bad guy.

Got it.

53. The way I see it -
There are facts and there are assumptions.

The fact is, the votes, as they were able to be cast and as they were "counted" gave the thing to bush. Damn I hate that I had to write that, but that is what happened.

A couple of assumptions:

I assume Kerry didn't put himself and his family and the nation for which I feel sure he cares thru all the hell of a two year campaign to become President just to walk away from it and let someone else have it. Makes no sense. If I believed that, I'd be wondering where they grow the marshmallows for Lucky Charms.

I also assume bushrummycheneyroveco, with one stolen election under their belt, would be smart enough to bury their tracks to the extent that immediate proof would be unavailable that they stole a second election (which they really, I beleive, lost by a landslide).

I assume, therefore, that he did not have proof - or readily available proof, with wich to challenge what had happened, because if he did, I have to believe he would have.

That's where we differ, evidently, because it seems you and others think Kerry should have kicked and screamed about a stolen elcetion whether he could prove it or not.

Can you imagine the repukes and the repuke shills - I mean media, screaming louder every day for Kerry to "give it up" - ???!!! Because, without a smoking gun, that's what would have happened. I don't think anybody here doubts that. It would have been a relentless ambush, and Kerry, and the party, and the country, would have been far worse for it.

Faced with that option or the one Kerry chose, which would you have chosen?

Its not that I don't see your point. I do.I'm pissed at what happened just a few months ago. I think about it regularly. And if I believed Kerry "just let it happen" I'd be pushing my way onto that bandwagon. But I don't.

Its nice to have someone to blame. But to me, blaming Kerry for what happened in 2004 just doesn't jibe with logic or facts - the way I see it.

72. What didn't he try, to look like a sore loser, a raving lunatic
or deranged conspiracy theorist? He did what was best, in his opinion and based on his knowledge, for this country. I think the majority of the American people would have not taken any challenge seriously and would have been resentful and angry at John Kerry and the Democrats for stalling and not letting this past election come to an end. He had no concrete proof back in November that couldn't have been refuted by the Repubs. Even with some information that has come out in the past months, it still would not have been enough proof to make a challenge successful.

43. what "reality" do you speak of? The reaslity whereby we were promised our
votes would be counted, the reality of "No retreat, No Surrender" That reality? Or the one where he conveniently was absent from the Senate on Jan 6th in Iraq.

I too embraced his candidacy, and worked many volunteer hours to get him elected. He is a bright man of admirable talent. However I will always contend that no matter who you are Democrat, Repug, Independent, Green, etc. you should be judged upon your actions and inactions. This man above all else had a huge opportuntiy to promote democracy in this country on Nov. 3rd by saying he is following through on his multiple campaign promises to insure every vote is counted. He is an educated, intelligent man who makes his living in politics. His good friend is Max Cleland who was vistimized in 2002 by electoral fraWd (BBV). He knew what happened just as well as you and I know what happened. He could have at the least if he so chose could have conceded to chimp but still demanded any and all digital voting apparatus be thrown out in favor of Paper ballots and hand counts. I could live with that better than what we have now.

As I stated earlier, any person in a position of power and influence should be screaming for impeachment. Mr. Kerry hasn't even commented after six weeks about the DSminutes.

56. Hasn't commented after 6 weeks? You are a LIAR or LAZY.
Try Google News on "Kerry Downing Street".

Here I'll make it easy:

Glowing Embers
and
Kerry assails Bush on Iraq

"When I go back (to Washington) on Monday, I am going to raise the issue," he said of the memo, which has not been disputed by either the British or American governments. "I think it's a stunning, unbelievably simple and understandable statement of the truth and a profoundly important document that raises stunning issues here at home. And it's amazing to me the way it escaped major media discussion.

That is called a COMMENT. Look it up in a fucking dictionary. You can't tell me you MISSED this story which has been all over DU, dailykos, NewsMax ("Kerry calls for impeachmnet") yada yada yada. Seeeuuure.

After you're done looking up "comment" why don't you get off your ass and call OTHER Senators to do something too:

Do you think that you're alone in being upset about the election? You're not. We all just handle things differently. Some of us deal with it by trying very hard to focus on doing what we can do to make a difference.

Truth be known I'm still heartbroken, okay. But I don't have time to cry pity all the time. There's work to do and meanwhile, John Kerry's in the Senate doing the work everyday.

9. I worked my ass off for Kerry in Ohio ......
...... I just found out that his lawyer heading the recount was a
republican connected to Gov. Taft. He promised to fight and did
not do shit ....... good luck to him and I hope he is an effective senator
but he did not live up to the promise he made me on the Ohio State Campus
in late Oct.. The proof and #s have been documented but he protected
his own ass and hopes to marshall forces and money in '08 .....
screw 'em.

19,000 votes loaded into the data after polls closed in Miami County
86 of 88 voting machines flipping votes to bush in Mahoning County
126% turn outs in Perry County
62 voting machines loaded onto trucks and driven around the county
on election day ..... as people stood 4 -10 hours in the rain to vote
Franklin County
I called his Senate office and I went to his State HQs with proof of
fraud (I had worked there) on 11/3 and was told, "well we lost fair
and square."
on 1/6/05 he was not on the Senate Floor .....
i could go on for pages ......

27. You Know
A lot of us worked our asses off in more ways then one for the campaign, and I am proud I did, it brought out the fight that had went to sleep in the early 70's. No one has brought that out in me since Bobby Kennedy, and John Kerry brought it out in me again.

I pity you for being so caught up in your tinfoil hat, yes we lost and yes they stole it, but to blame the man who loves this country so much and only wants to make life better for all, is down right disgusting.

I supported Senator Kerry since spring 2003 and I will tell you he never let me down, he was the best we had and I am damn proud to stand with him in the fight to make this country America again.

So please STFU, it is getting tiresome, grow up, move on, we all hurt last November, how about going after the other side they are the blame , they are the crooks and the liars, they are the ones destroying our democracy.

Oh by the way he was not on the Senate floor on 1/6 because he was in Iraq and other countries, he was told not to be there, but I guess you didn't hear that with your closed mindedness. I liked you to walk 1 day in the man's shoes. :argh:

Sen Kerry
a war hero ...... yes
a good man ......... yes, from what people have told me that worked with him for
years 1st hand ...... his work w/ the families of the firefighters who died in
Wooster Mass. was touching and gallant
BCCI investigation ...... good job
A fine voting record ....... without a doubt
A good stump speaker ....... yes

"Every vote counts and every vote will be counted." J.K. ..... he did not follow
through ......

I am not blaming him for the criminal actions actions that caused the theft
of the election but his lack of public response left me and a lot of good Americans
hung out to dry and marginalized as "tin foil hat wearing crazies" who don't
know when to quit.

50. Thank you ......
I never get how some people claim to be democrats but the
democratic idea of free speech and thought is wrong.

I did not attack Kerry personally ..... i did attack the utter lack
of a public front on his part to stand up and say something went
wrong in the election ..... the proof is there.

New Mexico every precinct that had opti scan went to * even ones
where Al Gore won in 2000 and had more registered demos.

Indiana 6 counties you voted a straight party ticket (dem only) and
the vote @ the top of the ticket got switched to a 3rd party candidate

Greene County, OH .... 3 or 4 Precincts that were home to 2 African American
Colleges, Wilberforce & Central State with 3,800 registered voters produced
50 recorded votes .......

the Conyer's Report would have given him cover to stand up and say something
but he didn't and that leaves me with an empty feeling.
Damn it we have to go on the attack and force the repugs to defend the indefensible
ie. the election was stolen

36. You only know half the story
You only just found out about his lawyer in Ohio? But you don't know that he no longer has that lawyer, and hasn't since before the new year? That was news back in December. So was the story that he got rid of that lawyer, and then hired Don McTigue, who is still involved in a lawsuit to get at the facts?

On 11/3 he thought he had lost. As he told Jesse Jackson, he believed what he was told. He was set up. One person he and his staff don't know, one out of hundreds of calls his office got that day, wasn't going to make a dent in their psyche.

But it didn't take Kerry long to get rid of that lawyer you speak of and get one that had experience in voter issues. He has co-sponsored legislation for election reform. He's spoken on the issue of suppression and got a verbal slap in the face for it because folks thought he was being an opportunist on MLK Day.

They will think that either way, because it's Kerry, and no matter what he does, some folks will see pandering. He's quiet. He's a coward. He speaks up. He's glory-seeking. He's LiveShot, doncha know.

Take the time to find out the WHOLE story.

75. Well, I'm sure we all appreciate you working so hard for him
a lot of us did, myself included. Obviously though, you never understood the man or his honest motivations. Your numbers and recollections are compelling, but they could still be disregarded and refuted by the Bush camp. I believe you are correct, but also believe Kerry chose the only sensible course available to him at that time.
You assign selfish ulterior motives to what he does, if he doesn't act upon things as you would. Kerry, may not have been on the floor on Jan. 6th, but he did co-sponsor legislation to make our voting system fairer and less corrupt. You know, actions speak louder than words. Kerry, is a man of quite action.

39. "I just received this a short time ago from a Kerry confidant"
People who post confidential information to the internet(s) will find themselves cut off from futher information, unless the leak was intentional.

58. Dude, they sent the same to RAW STORY.
Get real. It was intentional.

(2 weeks ago: Kerry comments to a reporter of a small-town paper. The story runs wild on the internets. 1 week ago: Kerry aide emails another small(?) paper, the Boston Phoenix. The story drifts a little around the internets but is mostly swallowed up in the residual from the previous week. This week: WaPo gets wind of Kerry's "letter" from somewhere; next day, at least two internet blogs - who are guaranteed to publish the information - are given slightly more detail by a "Kerry confidante". Hmmmmm..... wonder if it was intentional?)

41. Forget Kerry take the truth straight to the media (contact list)
Edited on Wed Jun-15-05 05:53 PM by psychopomp
This list has some emails that are no longer active. Remember put them in Bcc so as not appear as a mass email. If you email uses the semi-colon ( than copy the list in word and do a find/replace on , with ;

Good luck!

may as well write to Karl Rove and ask him to cover it as well.

High-profile Democrats speaking out on television, etc is the only way to get this off the ground.

48. As usual Kerry is a day late and dollar short,
What happened to him bringing up the DSM on the senate floor? All I heard was 1 statement from his spokesperson. Well we will just have to wait and see.....

54. He said he's bring to the senate and he's been pressing other senators
behind the scenes to join him in this battle. He has a senate letter passing around and is urging other senators to sign on as a companion to the Conyers letter in Congress.

This has been posted more than a few times the last two days. Maybe those we claim it's an important issue to them should read the DSM active sites more often.

Sheesh. People applaud ranting and raving and kick the pragmatic DOERS to the curb.

61. Here's the link, please do your job -
(YOU. I am talking to you, laugle, not Kerry)

From downingstreetmemo.com (you know, the site leading the activism on the DSM):

Support the letter asking the Senate to reopen the stalled Senate Intelligence Committee Hearings

Senator John Kerry is presently circulating a letter in the Senate that calls for the President to answer questions raised by the Downing Street Memo. We urge everyone to contact your senators--be they Republican or Democrat--and encourage them to sign on to Kerry's letter. It is expected to be made public in the coming days, but the more support it gets now the better. Congressman John Conyers has been leading the effort in the House to bring this issue into the light; now Senator Kerry is doing the same in the Senate. Let's support both of them so that the issues surrounding why and how we went to war receive the fair hearing they deserve.

76. Wow, lighten up.
I'm just telling you there is something YOU can do. Instead of sitting back and blaming someone else for being "a day late and a dollar short". You said you haven't heard anything, yet here is THE activist site for DSM telling you this is what is happening.

Sorry, I don't get what your problem is with Kerry.

And -

"Never, ever on DU has anyone been sooooo rude an offensive!"

Get real!! I've been reading here for awhile...if you're offended by MY post, you are thin-skinned indeed.

But sorry, I didn't mean to offend. I need sleep. So, I'm off to it...

91. Because you think government corruption SHOULD be allowed and condemn
the one lawmaker who has investigated and exposed the most government corruption in modern history.

So, name one lawmaker who has effected our government more positively than Kerry has over the last 35 years. That way we can tell what your standard is for a politician.

She's saying, instead of bitching at Kerry, get of your tuffet and do what YOU can for the issue. We have a job to do as well as Kerry. He's doing his in his own way and his own time. He never was into dog and pony shows.

Do yours.

telling me to "do my job" you know she was very rude! I also know that there are plenty of mean spirited people and don't need a lecture on how I need to feel or think. Thank you. Enough said, lecture is over. 1st lesson in effective communication; piss people off and they will never listen to what you have to say.

I think not. And don't tell me you haven't been pissed off many times. Anyway, my gripe wasn't with you. There are just too many people that know it all. I really would appreciate if you would stay out of this since it isn't about you. Thank you.

96. What the flying fuck ARE you talking about
Nobody's saying any of the above. Nobody's saying anything LIKE the above. We just trust the guy more than you do. He says he's gonna address it. He's gonna address it. We're just not beating our tits about how he should be doing it in our way, and in our time.

Nobody's saying that the DSM is just peachy and how we should move along or some such shit. Kerry was among the first Dems to say ANYTHING about it. And that mere mention brought the issue some publicity.

It's being followed through on. We're waiting, and seeing, and calling our Senators to get on board with Kerry's letter. I called Feingold last night, though I'm sure he already signed. Just in case I called anyway. I'll check in with Kohl today and make sure he does as well.

Now what are YOU gonna do?

Nope, not angry, just pointing out that there's a better place to put this kind of fluff piece about Kerry...in the Kerry forum.

It would be different if there was any substance to the piece, but it's all innuendo, no facts.

Typical of the one-candidate posters here.

He could at least put something on his website acknowledging that he is aware of DSM. At the very least do that. Maybe even a little blurb about him looking into the situation. That is all that he had to do and it would avoid a lot of trashing of him here.

There are little groups that hate Dean or Kerry or whoever no matter what, I am aware of that.

John Kerry Leads Dems Fight to Protect Medicaid Benefits
16 June 2005

While Democratic grassroots activists are chomping at the bit for more to be said on the DSM issue, the Republicans have set an agenda in the Senate and the House and our Senators and Representatives are fighting the good fight on a host of issues including protecting Medicaid benefits…

From The Hill: Dems criticize NGA's new Medicaid plan

Led by Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), Democrats said that the recommendations would not fix what they see as the underlying problem - that federal and state tax cuts have dried up the revenue needed to pay for Medicaid and other health programs. Kerry touted his proposed Kids First program, which would provide healthcare to the 11 million uninsured children in America.

Kerry and Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) argued that the healthcare system could be fixed for less money than President Bush proposes spending to make his 2001 tax cuts permanent.

News flash: We don't give a flying fuck about spin. We will only applaud Kerry when he gets off his duff and starts speaking loudly and defiantly in front of the camera. Maybe the MSM won't cover it, but he could call a press conference and I'll bet you more than a dollar than C-SPAN would be there. He's a recently former presidential candidate. As such, he could get air time if he wanted it. Also, why isn't he on the Senate floor screaming and yelling about DSM???

Can't have it both ways Senator Kerry.
