A suggestion for my fellow Americans who happen to be gay
If george bush says all is forgiven we've lifted the ban on gays in the military, we want you to come and proudly serve, tell him to go fuck himself. If bush needs bodies so badly to fight his sordid war based on his intentional lies, he can open up Army Recruiting booths in christian conservative churches in red states. I proudly served 24 years but I would not encourage any member of an oppressed minority to take up arms to protect ignorant hate mongering crackers who peddle their evil tax free. Let wildmon, bauer, falwell etc do bush's recruiting for him.

1. Wasn't feigning homosexuality a time-honored way of beating
the draft once?

This is the reason I have had against gays serving in the military - they're depriving themselves of a weapon in case another Vietnam-type situation arises. Why the hell should gays and lesbians fight for someone else's basic human rights elsewhere on this planet when they are being deprived of those rights here at home by their own government?

BTW, for the record, I'm single and straight (but I ain't narrow).

4. That was the myth.
Fact was, during a draft they take almost anyone. Draft-dodging isn't easy and draft-dodgers are seen as malingerers.

Check out the story of Perry Watkins for a good example of the kind of thing that went on.

I knew Perry in Germany in the post-Vietnam Army. He was an openly, and unmistakably, gay black man, a staff Sargent by then, and one of the nicest people I met in the Army. As far as I could tell, he was accepted in our unit and was indeed the best clerk I ever saw - able to quote page and paragraph of regulation after regulation. Once, he even performed as Simone for us in the on-base "All-Ranks" club (our unit was too-small for separate enlisted and officers clubs). I didn't know him well, as he kept to himself, but after leaving Germany I followed his story from afar and was elated when he won his legal battle with the Army over his discharge. His case was unusual in that it was heard by higher courts and he actually won! Before he died I saw that he carried the U.S. Army flag at the huge DC Gay Rally in 1993(I think). He died of Aids in 1996.

7. It was said to have been used
whether this is urban legend or reality, I don't know. I do know that homosexuality was way more of a stigma in the late 60s than it is now. I also don't know how whether a marriage, say 2 years later, or being seen on a date (with a girl) would have been grounds for charges.

My Fellow American. I wish you all the best with any and all of your future endeavors. The few Sailors I served with whom I knew were Gay were hardcharging productive buckeroos. As a CPO I spent a lot of time having to deal with drunks and spouse abusers and check book abusers and all of them were "straight" as arrows. If christians want to hate and want to fight a war, let them do it at the same time and at the same place.
