15 Senators didn't cosponor the Lynching Apology Res, who?
Edited on Wed Jun-15-05 09:41 AM by usregimechange
Eighty senators, however, had signed as co-sponsors, putting themselves on record as supporting the resolution. By the time the Senate recessed Tuesday evening, five other senators had added their names as co-sponsors, leaving 15 Republicans who had not.

http://www.ajc.com/news/content/news/stories/0605/15natlynch.html

Below are the Senators (83) that are down for cosponsorship, help me figure out who the 15 (or 17) Republicans are who did not cosponsor it. Frist vetoed the roll call even though Senators asked for it so as to not have the 15 on record. Who is missing?

8. Isn't it pathetic that we are crying about that dirty old Sadaam and
all he did to his people, but here in the year 2005 some are unable to admit what we did here?? It's the same group who scream about how liberals "always blame America first"----maybe it's about time we took the damn blinders off in this country.

24. Only two actually surprised me a bit...
the two from NH, one of the few states that has never had a lynching and has never struck me as horrendously prejudiced when we used to visit a friend there quite often. Most residents I've met from there truly embrace the "Live Free or Die" motto of their state.

I wonder if they felt that since their state had never lynched anyone that they didn't need to apologize? IMO they still should have just to show a united front against this type of hate and crime. Of course some of the attitude I ran into on AOL's message board about this whole thing was, and I truly hope that's not their reason, is "that was then this is now.. why should we apologize at all?" Hmmm... maybe because it's the right thing to do and it might help just a tiny bit to heal the family's wounds that still bleed... some because of the lack of action by their representatives on this for so long... too long.

26. A lot of people seem to be rejecting the apology, making
it less important who did or didn't sponsor it or vote for it.

I think that when I was in my 20s or early 30s I wouldn't have sponsored it. I wasn't responsible, and apologizing on behalf of some other people, even in a continuation of the same organization or body, seems rather a rather pointless PR stunt.

I might also have viewed it as somehow admitting continuing responsibility, something that could be cited in a law suit, and at the very least gotten some civil rights legal beagles to look at the resolution, to see if it admits culpability.

Now, in my mid-40s, I'd regard it as a meaningless gesture to make others feel good.

One rumor I've heard, but don't feel like bothering to check out, is that there were a number of anti-lynching bills introduced in Congress in the late 1800s and early 1900s, but they were all squashed by one means or another. That would make an interesting discussion thread, regardless of what the historical record actually showed.

27. I agree
that it could be a PR stunt... and it probably is "meaningless" since I have my doubts whether it is truly heartfelt. OTOH I'm not sure something is totally "meaningless" if it actually would make someone feel even a little bit better. I guess, even though I'm now in my mid-40s, I still remain a bit of a "bleeding heart" that way even though that's become tainted a bit now by adverse life experiences and cynicism.
