Any updates on the release of Abu Ghraib photos?

As I recall the court ordered the feds to turn the new photos and video over to the ACLU by June 30, after allowing time for redaction of the video especially.

But the story seems very quiescent. Are the Bushies appealing anywhere? Is the ACLU announcing the release in any way?

I think this stuff could be the bombshell of the summer, and the gasoline tossed onto a smoldering pile of straw. The level of criticism and discontent is rising. Bush's "unpopularity" -- our crucial target here -- is being spoken of more frequently in more public places. On the surface it's all Michael and Runaway Brides and blah blah blah, but one can almost smell a sea change in the breeze. Republicans distancing themselves from Bush. Closing Gitmo actually a widely discussed subject on the cover of Time and in the mouths of establishment figures. Polls for His Chimpness in the low 40s. Coingate. On and on. What we need here is an accelerant.

Pictures of Americans committing unspeakable acts, videos of rape under our watchful eyes -- remember the last time? This will preoccupy the right wing spin machine, which gives us an opportunity to get other stuff they'd normally take time to spin out there in a barrage. These pics and videos are supposedly much worse, and the pornographic mentality of the mainstream media being what it is, and the secret lust for such images among the hate-filled masses being what it is, I imagine we'll see these images go nuclear.

Or . . . the MSM could suddenly have a convenient attack of conscience and announce new commitments to "decency" as they refuse to show us the pictures. I'm sure the whores are figuring this out now -- which is why the "unpopular president" meme matters so much to establish ahead of time. If ONE media outlet shows the pics, the rest will follow.

Meanwhile, we should expect to have to use the net to buttress the moment.

Make no mistake -- I'm not cynical. I am already as outraged as possible over Abu Ghraib, Gitmo, the Gulag, thousands of dead children. Nothing could make me angrier or more shocked. But we need more Americans to cross that line, and if these images accomplish that then the victims of our torture will not have suffered in vain for the obscenities enacted on their souls and bodies.

And to them all I say, I'm sorry, please try to forgive the millions of good Americans who are working to try to stop this horror. We are their victims too, though not meaning at all to compare the suffering of Americans of Conscience in the throes of a virtual coup d'etat with someone hanging from the ceiling in a cell.

Damn Bush. Damn his minions. Damn anyone who would call her/himself a "Christian" or a "Jew" and be able to look the other way or make "war is hell" excuses given all we know. Damn the ignorance of the people in this country, and the corporate warlords who work so hard to maintain it. History will be your judge.

the Schiavo autopsy results - this is killer for the GOP

all the Gitmo abuse - the DSM hearings....

the totally unacceptable situation in Iraq..
