Okay, people --- TIME TO START
Edited on Thu Jun-16-05 03:14 PM by Eloriel
START CALLING YOUR CONGRESSPEOPLE to lobby them for Impeachment Hearings.

"I've just been watching John Conyers' hearing on C-Span 3, and you better believe I want Congress to investigate the administration for high crimes and misdemeanors in the prosecution of this war."

or whatever. Short, sweet, VERY FIRM but polite.

The witness named John (?) Bonifaz was wonderful on this subject. He's a Constitutional attorney, and this is his website:

1. Correct me if I'm wrong -
Edited on Thu Jun-16-05 03:10 PM by Internut
but you cannot possibly have impeachment hearings (in fact, you cannot have any official Congressional hearings, Conyers' meeting today was not one) without Republican participation. The Congressional rules do not allow that.

Where are you going to get Republican congressmen that would support convening such a hearing?

8. If I say "you cannot make steel if you don't have iron" -
did I "lose already" or am I just stating a fact?

It is a fact that you cannot have a Democratic-only official Congress hearing.

6. LOL! Those Republicans are already bailing on their beloved leader.
Martinez was quoted in the paper this weekend criticizing Bush. Duncan, Brown, et. al. have begun speaking out against Iraq and pressing for an exit strategy. I can see the rats scurrying away from the sinking ship.

Never underestimate the power of personal pride and ambition. They'll sell him out if they think it will save their careers.

Never say never!!!

10. There is a huge leap from disagreeing with their president
and joining an impeachment hearing.

I cannot see, in my mind's eye, even one Republican congressman who would join an impeachment hearing against Bush. Can you?

15. IF this gets sufficient exposure they won't have a choice -- but we
must begin NOW.

Tell them to watch C-Span tomorrow night for a rebroadcast (or they can probably get a video from C-Span).

11. Yes, we might get some GOP pols to act, but ...
it will have to be in steps. We shouldn't demand impeachment hearings, rather hearings on the lead up to the Iraqi invasion in light of the DSMs. If some GOP pols respond and ask for hearings, it can build from there. If none do, then we have to push the media, arguing that the entire GOP is corrupt, will not even investigate evidence that one of their own might have done something wrong.

13. Doesn't matter. What matters is the firestorm.
Let's rain down fire on these bastards.

17. Exactly right -- the firestorm alone will weaken Bush and all Repugs
and that's worth it too.

Congressional Dems have already used the DSM memos to push back on Bolton some more (and that's a GOOD thing):

Democrats cite British memo (DSM) in opposing Bolton

14. That is actually my point, Internut, tho you MIGHT be surprised
Look here, for example: A CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN speaks against the Iraq war
(Congressman John Duncan Jr - REPUBLICAN, Tennessee)
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3864524

Plus, if we don't TELL them, they won't know how much sentiment is out there and certainly won't do much about it. It's probably not something they'll do on their own, ever, esp. given the vindictiveness of Bush and Rove.

So it's EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to start telling them exactly how you feel about this issue. Very important.

21. Concentrate on moderate Republicans
We should start writing mostly to the moderate republicans (I know there aren't many anymore). The moderates in the Repug party get attacked by the neocons who were behind this war so they might be more inclined to listen.

He and Conyers did the same thing for the elections and he isn`t done with that yet.
