We are very proud of your statements on the actions of the abusive guards. We applaud you as you are one of the few Democrats with the courage and integrity to stand up to this corrupt and criminal administration.

We implore you to stand by your statements. We in the Democratic community will stand by you! We are residents of Maine, but we are proud that you represent our values in the Senate.

Of course, we know that the "Democratic community" means US. I'm sure the spineless leadership will bail on Durbin as fast as they do Dean!

1. Actually, Sen. Reid went to the floor to defend him

Sen. Durbin bravely stood up to both Sen. Warner and Sen. McConnell and defended his remarks against their false accusations. Sen. Reid went to the floor and defended his ssistant minority whip.

To the Editor:

It was with dismay and horror that I viewed the photo of a cowering Iraqi prisoner menaced by vicious military guard dogs at Abu Ghraib prison (front page, May 10).

As an Austrian Jew imprisoned in Dachau and Buchenwald in 1938 and 1939, I was an eyewitness to similar inhumane behavior by sadistic Nazi SS guards.

I used the email form at his web site and didn't keep a copy, but what I said was similar in sentiment, that I applaud his honesty and his hard work on this issue (it's been ongoing; his statement against confirming Gonzales was very intense and moving). And since I am in IL, I told him I was proud to have voted for him (twice) and look forward to doing so again. :)
