Why no Peace rallies?

Another article in the American Conservative magazine launched by Patrick Buchanan featuring Old Right themes and critical of neoconservatism.

"How They Get Away With It" by Scott McConnell addresses why there aren't any anti-war rallies like there were during Vietnam.

He mentions three main reasons (four counting the volunteer army (no draft)).

1) The better economy at that time made dropping out nearly cost free.

2) An attitudinal shift of the American Jewish community toward pro-war, pro imperialist and away for more left leaning liberal ideas.

3) The Evangelicals have embraced the military as a bulwark against national moral decay. Where the U.S. embodies God's will and it's enemies are "God's Enemies"

That, and perhaps another 20,000 dead US soldiers.

(Just a hunch.)

Edit- Here, have a spacked out bush.

2. Buchannan, You Don't Pull Any Punches

The word community is interesting in this context. I have seen it said that the majority of jews did not vote for Bush but that many jewish organizations strongly support him. The ADL's response to Senator Durbin seems instructive. (They oppose his use of Holocost imagery to comment on events like abuse at Gitmo).

I also think there may be a concensus to stay neutral on the issue, or at least stay off the RADAR screen. The potential to be blamed for this war exists. Read some of Justin Raimondo's work at antiwar.com and you can see just how precarious the situation can be.

Perhaps it is worth considering that college students typically lead such activities. Fewer students today are libral arts majors etc. They are more focused on business careers, professional training programs etc. Conforming to expectations rather than questioning fundamental societal values seems a logical place to look for an explanation as well.

Finally there are the demographics. The population is older and more likely to appeal to 'the rules' vs. taking it to the streets.

3. If there is a draft
you can bet your bottom dollar even Young Republicans will be in the streets, especially if no deferments are allowed, you just go when called.
