Is Syria this war's Cambodia?
Apparently the Chimp said, ""We will settle for nothing less than victory" over terrorists in Iraq. Well, day after day news reports say there's heavy fighting on the border with Syria.

Are they already engaged in what Jon Stewart called Operation "While You're Up There...?" In other words, are we not crossing the border? And what are the implications of that, if we are, in terms of both international law and yet more presidential LYING?

Even if the fighters retreat back into Syria, how long can we keep that border secure?

1. You might be right
We let Pol Pot run amuck after Viet Nam and Syria could be the same in terms of atrocities.

All press reports say we are operating on "the border".

5. to suggest Pol Pot was nothing but a creation of US policy in SE Asia
is very wrong, and historically innacurate.

8. We "let" Pol Pot?
So what should we have done?

After we left Vietnam, we should have invaded Cambodia?

Our side lost in Cambodia. Pol Pot won. He didn't ask our permission to do anything.

9. There was a recent report of out guys fighting 'uniformed 'forces' at the
Syrian border. The report was out there for aday or three and then zipped down the memory hole faster than one can say "War Crimes".

I have no link to the report, and recall that few if any even here on DU knew of it. Again, I can find no link to it anywhere, but I know for certain I heard a report on WTOP (NewsRadio 1500 in DC) and on one of the cablenewz outlets, probably MSNBC.

It's beginning to smell a lot like 1968 out there .....

14. I don't know, now. . . 1968

smelled like sandalwood and patchouli, as I recall.

:hippie:

But, yeah, Syria seems to be standing in for Cambodia this time around and maybe Iran is representing China? (Too big and too well-armed for us to tangle with but we want to contain them, send them a message, and all that.)

10. If Bush wants a Democratic Congress in 2007, he'll invade Syria
Anything that involves US troops and Syria or US troops and Iran legitimizes the "left wing loonies" who warned that this would happen and that's the LAST thing that they want to do.

And as crappy as our so-called journalists are these days, a "Secret War" with Syria is a story that they simply can't ignore. One, because people will read about it in the New York Times anyway and two, because it's a story that will keep people glued to CNN, FAUX, and MSNBC for weeks on end.

11. That's IF they tell the public about it.
I asked in GD about maps of Karabilah and several helpful posters found some:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=3894372&mesg_id=3894372

Look at how close it is to the border. Are they just playing cat and mouse over there, respecting that border? Can we really believe they haven't crossed it?

Remember how long it took before Americans were told we'd been bombing Cambodia?

No doubt the media would follow script and spin it in some fashion even if it were known. :(

12. Alright if I recall my Vietnam history correctly...
Americans knew about the bombing of Cambodia by 1970. However, it was LATER uncovered that we had sent troops in to Cambodia.

Now, tell me that I'm wrong and correct my history because I'm about 50% sure of what I just said.
