McCain looks like a political "opportunist" this morning....
His responses seem more "political" than usual. With his responses about Durbin, Schiavo, his run for the presidency, his support for the war on terror, and his suck up to Bush, all reflect poorly on him today, in my opinion.

6. I have a theory they got McCain to "beg" "sit" etc. by promising him
Karl Rove in the next election. Funny thing is that the longer McCain "sits" "begs" etc.... the less and less of his 'persona' as an independent he has. The 'brand' has been diminished a great deal in the last year and half.

If McCain keeps on - nobody will remember his persona of the 2000 election and he will be considered a total Bush/Rove ass-puppet!

Which would then leave room for Jeb or some other neocon favorite to get the nomination.

8. Johnny is being used
He is karl Roves new butt boy. But what he doesn't realize is Karl will toss him as soon as he is through with him. No matter what he was promised by Adolph Rove...after what Rove did to him in the primaries HOW...JUST HOW could he be a mouthpiece for those lying crazed Bushevics?

9. All Rove does all day long is find a way to separate his opponents
(the leaders) from their base. That is exactly what is happening to McCain. He seems to not know it. I used to like McCain and I keep up-chucking every time I hear about him being a patsy.

15. I don't disagree with you. But, I believe McCain can put together
a group of dumb Dems, so-called independents, swing voters, enough of the Repug base (evangelicals, etc.), "main-line-normal" Repugs (any left?) and libertarians to win. Will he get it done? Maybe -- maybe not. I think I could back that up with enough research, but I probably will not take the time.

17. He's everybody's benign but a bit stupid granddad

and that's why he's so popular.

As for what he said, he basically supported Bush on/due to Iraq and Terror...because he's one of the people who still wants to make up for losing in Vietnam, if you read him between the lines. The rest (well, it too) was a lot of fear-of-change nonsense when boiled down. And a desire not to piss off the Religious Right more because he doesn't really have the desire or the energy to fight them more intensively.

I think he's a pretty telling demonstration of where moderate conservatives are these days. Their principles, such as they are (though by reputation they have a lot) are getting strained and broken and incoherent with the facts if not irrelevant. Look at McCain and ask yourself whether he's relevant.

Another facet is that in the rehashing/reliving of the past that has been the motif of these past couple of years, it's roughly 1974. McCain is a fellow who is very much at home in 1974ish circumstances and issues...as is counterpart Democrat Joe Biden, for example. This is their last moment in the sun, as I see it. Let 'em enjoy it a little.

18. McCain
When he talks about Iraq, and how it will take years, and that we can't pull out-this is the insanity of Viet Nam all over again. He should know better -since he has seen it first hand.

should disqualify him in the eyes of most Democrats, I would think?

21. McCain made me absolutely sick
this morning when he said he thought Bush was more qualified for the presidency than John Kerry because of how well bush* fought the war on terror. McCain said: That's why I campaigned for bush* and I am proud that he is the president. :puke:
