Orlando Sentinel's Friday Forum is about Terri Schiavo - comments? |
|
Friday Forum asks readers: Does the Terri Schiavo autopsy put an end to the controversy? Why or why not?
Here's mine (needs a closing sentence):
The Terri Schiavo autopsy should have put an end to the controversy over her death, but unfortunately Governor Jeb Bush and the Republicans are continuing to churn this non-story. It is clear that Senator Bill Frist (R-TN) should have his medical license revoked for his unethical (and incorrect) diagnosis of Terri Schiavo. It is clear that the Republicans overstepped their bounds when they made the unprecedented effort to pass legislation specifically for her. And it is clear that now Jeb Bush is attempting to save face by using the power of the state to go after Michael Schiavo, when his role in his wife's condition was dealt with 15 years ago. The autopsy shows that the quacks and hacks who claimed that Terri Schiavo was not in a persistent vegistative state, that she could "speak" and "dance" were lying for gain, and the politicians behind it were seeking the praise of a single extremist constituency.
While the Terri Schiavo case was a family tragedy, it has shown light on the radical groups in this country that are willing to sacrifice the American ideals of personal freedom and privacy in favor of state and religious control.
