My tinfoil hat theory about ending the Iraq war.
:tinfoilhat: :tinfoilhat: :tinfoilhat:

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense, to me at least.

I think B*sh & Co. actually want to get out of Iraq, but don’t want to admit it publicly for fear of losing face. They’ve seen the unfavorable polls, and they’re aware of what a chaotic disaster they have created in Iraq.

But how to pull out of Iraq without admitting failure?

Why not create a set-up that lets them pull out without being the ones initiating a pull-out? Make it look like the progressive, anti-war crowd is forcing them to pull American troops out of Iraq. Give permission to Republicans like Jones and Hagel to call publicly for an end to the war. Let their trained-poodle media start writing about the sinking poll numbers concerning support for the war. Let their pet media editors start offering editorials demanding that the U.S. abandon the Iraqi war.

Maybe they can allow the Downing Street minutes to “accidentally” fall into the hands of the anti-war crowd, giving them ammunition for arguments that the war was preplanned and therefore illegitimate.

Along with this, one wonders whether the corporate/business elite have already written off B*sh as an abject failure and decided to dump him prior to 2008. Let B*sh get impeached and let Cheney run the show for a couple of years. Maybe make Condi or Frist the new VP and position her or him for the presidential race in 2008.

Does that sound like a plausible theory, or should I go lock myself in my room and apply a new layer of tinfoil?

1. an alternative theory
the point about conspiracy theories is you need evidence of a specific conspiracy. There is the sense of an Administration hardly above that -- but it's not necessarily as easy as you think.

First, these memos are not turning the tide of war and peace the way you seem to believe. The course of the war is mainly what makes the difference. Remember back in April/May 2004? It seemed Bush was a goner and the war truly unsellable. Well ...
One thing is that when you are pushing something hard, is that bad news and such now or in small doses can immunize; already the notion is that the fact that the whole war is grounded upon lies is old hat. Key thing was Bush's "victory" in 2004 accompanied by a media lockdown of Votergate. Bush is maneuvering for (1) entrenching the conservatives AND THEIR AGENDA for as long as possible, immunizing it from public opinion as much as possible; and (2) pushing for as much as possible, the biggest and most unreversible possible tax cuts for the rich, the greatest possible privatization and fiscal undermining of Social Security, pushing as much of Social Security as possible on to the poorest classes possible. He is a true believer in class warfare, on behalf of the ruling class. Nothing whatsoever authentic about his protestations of corporatist concern for the downtrodden and repressed. That's the Lord Mansfieldian approach.

On Iraq, consider this. Consider Iran. The US is in Afghanistan, has a client ("ally") in Uzbekistan, is in Iraq and is building FOURTEEN permanent military bases there, has a major base in Qatar. Is this all coincidence? No it's strategic geopolitics. That is the game their playing. And they are playing to win. I'll give this president and his Administration credit for one thing, they don't play to lose (like Kerry and the Dems did, as required in the real America). They play to win, honestly or no. And they have always gotten at least the policies they wanted and there are no forces out there -- not a craven media, not a serious and strong enough US mass peace movement, not Congress or the Court system, not in the international community. On the other hand, there's all this national debt. Well, America and the world may get screwed, but at least W and his friends plan to be doing the screwing
