Setting himself apart

But Biden himself admits he has never taken a high-profile role in many of the social issues that can make or break a Democratic candidate in the primaries. He has a mixed voting record on abortion and gay rights -- he voted to ban the so-called "partial-birth" abortion procedure, and he voted for a 1996 congressional resolution against gay marriage.

"I may not be what the party's looking for," Biden said. "I may be too 'muscular' on foreign policy. I may not be 'pure' enough about abortion rights. I may not have been 'energetic' enough about gay marriage."
