Durbin's speech
Edited on Tue Jun-21-05 06:47 PM by Mass
May be those who want to blame Durbin should take a few minutes to listen to what he actually said, rather than relying on AP and FOX:

1. What's your point? He wimped out.
He bowed and scraped to the neo-cons. Apologizing was a mistake, it played right into their hands. He has weakened himnself and our party.

The remarks for which he is apologizing were right on the money.

2. I have to disagree
He did not wimp out. He said what had to be said, insisting that his remarks on Gitmo were right.

He is intelligent enough to know that his use of the Nazis image was used as a way to avoid the discussion on Gitmo. So he did what was necessary so that they could talk about the subject again.

Sorry, but this was master politics.

3. Thank you for posting. And now, a critique
Senator Durbin's remarks today were unnecessary. He covered what needed to be said on Friday.

The point to be made is that behavior such as that described in the FBI report cited by Senator Durbin last week is unacceptable for one wearing the uniform of the United States.

The Bush regime has approved as a matter of policy of violations of the Third and Fourth Geneva Conventions and the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. It is no defense for the regime to assert, as is done through the Gonzales memos, that merely to say that certain acts do not constitute torture or humiliating treatment that they are not, in fact, torture or humiliating treatment. Disregard for such standards is to be expected of totalitarian regimes like Nazi Germany and petty tyrants like Saddam Hussein. We Americans proudly like to believe that we are above that. Alas, the Bush regime is not.

These acts are crimes against humanity. Those who have made them policy are the one who owe the American people an apology. Those who have made them policy are criminals who must be punished.

5. He folded like a cheap tent
Parse the words any way you want, but the media is reporting this as an apology. Why the hell was he crying like a baby if he was not apologizing? I expect more from my party leaders and once again I am let down. After this apology, maybe Durbin can go back to work on the judiciary committee -- this country needs some more right wing nazis on the federal bench. Being a dem is really hard on days like this.

6. Tell that to Byrd
Sure he does not apologize about Hitler, but he sends ultra-right wingers to the federal bench. Durbin did not.

7. Here's what I'd like to know.......
When Santorum apologized for his disgusting comments, why wasn't it newsworthy?

Aside from the blogs talking about it, it was barely discussed..

Americans seem to have the attention span of a eggplant..
