HuffPost: Dear John
I saw some pretty amazing things during the year I spent on your campaign, it's an amazing collage of emotions and memories I suppose I will never feel again. The joy of the early primaries, the anxiety of that endless afternoon in Miami before the first debate, the incredible sense of joy and relief when you took the entire campaign on your shoulders and carried us that night. The long night in Boston when slowly, we all realized we had come up just a little short.

But of all the things I saw, of all the experiences, the one that was the most remarkable was when I watched George Butler's film “Going Up River”, with Cam, and saw you, just over thirty years ago, in black and white and with utter conviction and clarity, asking the unanswerable:

"How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?"

You paid a heavy price for that moment of honesty three decades ago. Speaking your conscience about a war you no longer believed in fueled a fire that has lasted to this day. The Swift Boat liars would never have shown up last August if you hadn't spoken up in front of the US Senate all those years ago.

You also, on that fateful day, asked where America's leaders where, accusing them of abandoning the solders on the fields of battle, of committing the ultimate crime. Well, time passes, and today, you're one of those leaders now, sitting on the dais, wearing a dark suit and tie, seeing the other side of what happens when someone testifies in front of a Senate Committee.

But instead of waiting for a young officer who’s served in Iraq to speak up, take a minute and pick up the paper.

Much more, and so right: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/theblog/archive/james-boyce/dear-john-an-open-letter_2998.html

5. Powerful stuff
Recommended also.

Which may surpise some. But it is an honest question, sincerely asked. Well done Ms. Huffington.

One of the fears I had about a Kerry presidency was that we would, as Brooks said in a moment of clarity, be finding out if Pres. Kerry could catch medals as well as he threw them.

3. It brought tears to my eyes to read that and remember those days
in the late 60's and early 70's.

My God, what losses. Some of the finest men, some still really boys, I knew were killed in Vietnam. And somehow, it hurts today just like it did then.

We must get out of Iraq.

10. It's worse now...
And all that more heartbreaking. Here's a good man really trying to make a difference and people can't see it. Kerry agnonized over that speech to the Fulbright commission before he gave it. People don't get that. It took time to craft that speech and have it come across making the right points. He still does that now. He's methodical. He thinks things through.

People who enjoy bashing Kerry need to wake up and realize that he's on their side and we need him now more than ever. People need to reach out to him the way James Boyce did, with passion and compassion and honesty instead of anger and threats. He gets enough of that from the right-wing. But, no it's not enough... the left-wing has to help them by publicly bashing him constantly.

That's what's heartbreaking, Little Clarkie and one of the many reasons why things are worse.

9. What do you really want Kerry to do?
He was the first one to bring up the DSM. No, he hasn't yet been on the senate floor, but HE WAS THE FIRST ONE TO GET IT INTO THE MSM.

He has fought to get better armor. He has traveled to that region of the world and met with leaders to try and smooth over some of the hate that they have for us.

He fought hard during the campaign, talking about how that OBL is still out there, how * outsourced the capture of OBL. He talked about how Iraq was a new breeding ground for terrorists. How * sent our troops w/o enough armor. He demanded * to give a time frame for when he would begin pulling out the troops. He fought and fought and fought. He brought it all out in the open. And he has been to more funerals of our fallen shoulders than the resident has.

Now he is one senator in the minority party that has to fight everything this administration does.

So again I ask, what do you really want Kerry to do?

Happy now? So she spelled it wrong, I know you knew what she meant.

The list you posted is impressive but it's not the kind of leading we want. See John Conyers Jr. for a primer on the kind of leadership we want from John F. Kerry.

Or, to put it another way: Lead, follow or get the hell out of the way!

26. We need to stop focusing so much on Bush and look ahead.
I believe in what goes around comes around-Bush will get what he has coming to him at some point. Have you given any thought to what happens if Bush is actually ever impeached? Impeaching him won't solve the problems he's created, Chaney will carry on where Bush left off. If it were to happen, we would be trading one jerk for another one. IMO Chaney is terrible. Can you imagine him as president? Besides, impeachment is conducted in the US House. Reps conduct the hearings. And if you recall, we are far outnumbered in the house. In other words, Kerry can not call for impeachment. he can do just exactly what he is doing now, preparing to present a letter signed by other senators and himself to the Intelligence Committee requesting a review and investigation.

28. are you seriously suggesting Bush** should not be impeached?!?
Certainly you are tired or just not thinking properly because I can not understand how a person on this site does not have knowledge of the facts that chimp has committed multiple impeachable offense. Cheney too for that matter. Your argument that we shoulf forgo impeachment because cheney is worse is ludicrous. Justice should be served. hundreds of thousands are dead and you choose to ignore prosecuting the war criminals guilty of this heinous crime for greed. Bullshit! try them all!

And yes Mr. Kerry as well as any one else with half an ounce of integrity and patriotism should be demanding impeachment regardless of whether it is initiated in the House. He has the magnitude of his position as the standard bearer of the party and could help drive momentum to restore integrity and justice to America.

IMPEACHMENT NOW!

btw-The dsminutes have been public since May 1st. They have been public for fifty three days now. That is to say the downing street minutes have been public for sweven weeks damn it-wtf is he and any other american patriot waiting for before they will call for impeachment?

I am just saying that any and all people aware of the facts should take it upon themselves to use their positions and platforms to educate others and demand impeachment. We are not required to wait for the ignorant to catch up with the news are we? He of all people has the respect and could force corporate media attention thereby informing and mobilizing.

John Kerry is a good man. I would vote for him again as a Senator as I have in the past. I will however call a spade a spade when asked. He has had seven weeks to address this (DSM) and has not yet done so.

I hold all responsible who do not defend the constitution and publicly call for impeachment proceeding s to begin. Dems, Repugs, Independents, Greens, etc.

"How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?"

22. This is just a beautiful, heartfelt request-it took my breath away.
I just don't know honestly, if we should end this war like we ended Vietnam. This time around, I think we need to find away to honor the soldiers and somehow make something good out of this mess. I would love to see Kerry lead the way and put an end to this war and at the same time, honor our soldiers and declare a small victory for democracy in Iraq.Kerry had an intelligent plan for ending this tragedy and bringing our troops home. Nobody cared before.Maybe the time just wasn't right then.Maybe now the time is right and people will listen. One thing is certain, IMO, we can't just call for an end to this war without having a sure fire exit strategy that will accomplish what I have mentioned above and help us regain the respect the US once had in the world.

33. Sorry, there is no such thing as an appropriate exit strategy
This is as doomed as Vietnam was. If we leave tomorrow, there will be a bloody and brutal civil war that will shock and horrify the world. If we leave in 10 years, there will be a blody and brutal civil war that will shock and horrify the world.

You don't ask the rapist to stay to help the rapee get over the rape.

We need to leave. We need to leave completely and we need to hope and pray that the UN is able to help them recover from what we have done.

What we did in Vietnam was shameful. Unfortunately, we didn't heal as a nation so we are repeating it, substituting ragheads for gooks. And somehow, we think that by doing the same thing, we will get different results. That, my friend, is the definition of insanity. America's leaders and America overall, is insane.

34. This letter is a call for KERRY to do something...
...anything to make PUBLIC the lies of the Bush administration that are directly responsible for the death of thousands of innocent human beings. These lies and deceptions put American soldiers in HARM'S WAY. The Bush Junta lied about the need for war. This is a HIGH CRIME and an IMPEACHABLE OFFENSE.

Forget for a moment that Kerry voted to give Bush the power to invade. Forget that he said he would do it again knowing that the Bush administration manipulated intelligence and deceived the American people into believing that Iraq had something to do with the 'war on terrorism'.

Kerry...as one of the most high-profile Democrats...needs to LEAD BY EXAMPLE and tell the American people the truth about why we invaded Iraq and why we're still there today.

There is no more important issue right now than the killing fields in Iraq. Bush needs to be put ON NOTICE that the policy of 'preemptive, preventative' war is not acceptable to the people or their Constitution.

Kerry should LEAD or stop pretending he's a leader and presidential material.
