And if you can't be bothered to read past a headline then refrain from sidetracking a discussion.

And the second greatest sin is not reading the other replies before
repllying.

There was one the other day featuring a rumor that had been debunked by Snopes, and about half the replies were indignant responses to the OP, while the other half were people saying in frustration, "It's a hoax. It's been debunked by Snopes."

5. I got past the headline....
Edited on Wed Jun-22-05 02:53 PM by FrenchieCat
Only to see a reference to the "N" word three times in the beginning of the first paragraph.

Sorry, but I couldn't get past that. A one time reference could have got me through it.....but the unrequired three time mention was over the top.

I didn't respond.....because I might have threatened "Somebody".
Instead, I refrained and decided not to add to the post counts on that thread.

If a Newbie is that bold when entering the kitchen......then any heat experienced should not have been of any surprise.

Period.

10. As a black person
I found it to be more than was required.

I understand about "shock value"...which can make some curious and turn some off.

It personally turned me off. There are enough OP out there....that I don't have to read the "N" word three times in a row just to get to somebody's point.

Again, as a Black person, I didn't like it.

What about you? Are you Black?

8. Yes, I saw the n-word
purposely put into quotation marks in the context of making a point about how to get people to make associations with derogatory language.
If someone calls me a "fag," I get offended. If they say someone called someone a "fag" why would I be offended by that?

11. I don't really give a "fuck" if the word is in quotation......
a Three times mention was not warranted to make the point made.

I'm gonna go and post about this issue on the African-American Forum and get a gut check as to what others like myself think. I can already guess....but hey, as long as the OP is "good", who gives a "shit"? Right?

14. I'm not about to tell you what you can and cannot be offended by
And why would you need to validate it with others? If you find it offensive then so be it. I explained why I didn't find it offensive within the context of a similar situation that would apply to me personally and because of that I did not understand why you would react the way you did. Like I said, though, I can't tell you what you can and cannot feel.

You might go back and read it, putting aside your PC distaste for a word that's as powerful as you choose to make it.

22. You can call it a Distaste for PC,
Edited on Wed Jun-22-05 02:50 PM by FrenchieCat
I call it quite an overkill......and note that the word "offensive" was used twice by the OP in describing the usage of the word.

So I guess that as a Black person, if I didn't take "offense" ...then that would mean that the OP was wrong from the get-go....so why read on if the first three sentence of an OP is incorrectly stating that something is offensive...if it's not?

Go and PC that!

and skip what you want.

Your gain, your loss.

It's a shame, though, that your narrow vision precludes you from seeing the greater opportunities behind that oh-so-dangerous word. At the same time, you forfeit any legitimate reason to comment upon the post.

If you can get stomach an African-American man writing such a horrid book, you might want to read "Nigger - The Strange Career Of A Troublesome Word," by Randall Kennedy. http://tinyurl.com/bqzsy

But, you might not get past the title...............

I've been seeing that word thrown around DU a lot lately. Now saying it once maybe to say something meaningful is acceptable, but I agree that the repeated slurs were over the top! I thought about posting only to address that specific thing but decided not to bother.

25. You've got that right.....
but then "tolerance" is relative.

Some will tolerate certain things....and others won't...depending on what it is and how it affects them personally.

I say that those who accept both premise are the most tolerant of all.

32. And there you err, fatally,
because it is not personal.

A common, and always unfortunate, failing. It's vital to maintain a degree of objectivity in such discourse.

Tolerance is never relative. Intolerance, though, as you measure it and as you've displayed it, is - subjective choices do that and render the speaker impotent.

40. Oh, please,
Paragraphs? Are you serious?

Yes, that's behavior I'd expect from people who don't frequent DU. Here, foolishly, perhaps, I expect tolerance, a modicum of curiosity, and, at the very least, the understanding that words are used for reasons other than their most common meanings.

Paragraphs? You didn't seriously mean that. I know you didn't.

it was great. It started out with the very tactic the post discussed, and look at what it kicked up because some people decided to latch onto one word - ONE LOUSY WORD - and ignore the rest of the post.

Then they wonder why people heap contempt on Democrats.

Edited on Wed Jun-22-05 03:36 PM by FrenchieCat
and see how they respond. The only people in Congress doing most of the heavy lifting would not be in agreement with you, that I can assure you of.

I personally know Barbara Lee (we attend the same church)....and I can tell you know, she would look at you with an eye roll and consider you to be ignorant and another one of those "Liberal" that just doesn't have a clue.

If you don't know that the means to the end count just as much as the end....then you are blissed.

When something is over the top, it just is. Acting like it's not....doesn't make not so.

Namedropping, of course, gives your posts just so much credibility. . . .

It's a word. Read Walker Percy on semiotics and then stop and think about how much is missed in this world because people voluntarily choose to put on blinders. As a member of a minority myself, I find that terminally sad.

Hey, you must have my number since you called me every one of those adjective/verbs and nouns except for the one that you're defending as being OK (the one that I should get over).

Since you feel the need to have used all of those words to describe my person or my views.....I guess that I'd better just sit the fuck up and STFU.

but the responses were not "you are doing the same thing you're talking about" but more along the lines of "OMG I can't believe you're implying Hillary is a lesbian."
The former would be a legitimate response to the OP...the latter is a knee-jerk reaction that could only be arrived at by reading no farther than the subject line.
