Rove: Dems Didn't Get 9/11 Consequences

By SAM DOLNICK, Associated Press Writer 8 minutes ago

NEW YORK - Speaking in a Manhattan ballroom just a few miles north of ground zero, Karl Rove said on Wednesday night that the Democratic party did not understand the consequences of the Sept. 11 attacks.

"Liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers," Rove said. "Conservatives saw the savagery of 9/11 and the attacks and prepared for war."

Rove,
President Bush's chief political advisor, spoke at the state Conservative Party's annual dinner. He praised the conservative movement's success, calling it "the guiding philosophy for the White House, the Senate, the House."

Rove said the Democratic Party made the mistake of calling for "moderation and restraint" after the terrorist attacks.

"Conservatives saw what happened to us on 9/11 and said we will defeat our enemies. Liberals saw what happened to us and said we must understand our enemies."

Rove also denounced Sen. Dick Durbin's comments comparing interrogation at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp to the methods of Nazis and other repressive regimes. He said the statements have been broadcast throughout the Middle East, putting American troops in greater danger. Durbin has since apologized for the remarks.

"No more needs to be said about the motives of liberals," Rove said.

1. Reminds me of a great response years ago in Dear Abby or Ann Landers
from years ago:
When a married man tells another woman that his wife 'doesn't understand him' you can be sure his wife understands him all too well.

Oh, I think the Dems understand quite alot. And he's demeaning them by saying that they don't. Who was covered in the dust from the WTC? Not him.

11. Manhattan was about 80% Kerry

And the southern part of Manhattan (near the Trade Center) includes areas like the East Village, Greenwich Village, Soho, and Tribecca which are even bluer.

In fact about a month after 911, we went to a theater that was about 10 blocks from the WTC to see Molly Ringwald in "Tick Tock Boom", the play Jonathan Larsen wrote before Rent. The line that got the most repines was when the main character lamenting being near 30 without being a success yet, said something to the effect that this was a time of mediocrity, George Bush is President - a month after 911 in lower Manhattan there was no W worship.

3. Rove's lack of a college degree shows here
Is he forgetting how deferrential to Bush the Democrats were for over a year after 9/11? All but one congressional Democrat authorized attacking Afghanistan in 2001; the Democrats did nothing to stand in the way of Bush's defense budget increases; most Democrats voted for the Patriot Act; most Democrats were more than happy to give Bush all but one provision that he asked for in the Homeland security bill, and they even caved on that after the 2002 elections.

15. Rove has me figured alright
Edited on Thu Jun-23-05 01:21 AM by Tom Rinaldo
That story and the C.I.A. Report story came out on the same day which prompted me to write this at DemBloggers:
http://www.dembloggers.com/?op=displaystory;sid=2005/6/22/225846/142

So I'm looking at my computer screen, which is opened up to Yahoo News, and my eyes are bouncing between these two stories. One is from the Associated Press with the headline; "Rove: Dems Didn't Get 9/11 Consequences." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050623/ap_on_re_us/rove_sept_11

And the other is from Reuters with the headline; "CIA says Iraq is now a terrorist training ground." http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/security_iraq_cia_dc

WHOOP there it is.

I mean computers are smart in their own mindless way, but I don't expect them to write political commentary. Yet through the magic of juxtaposing, mine just did. This is too easy. Again. Rove: Dems Didn't Get 9/11 Consequences. CIA: Iraq is now a terrorist training ground.

Well the Bush White House never was interested in C.I.A. reports anyway, except when they got to edit them like they did with the science on global warning. But it isn't just the headlines, it's the text too. My computer keeps spitting out the commentary like a player piano reeling off notes. For example, it served up this (quoting Rove); "Conservatives saw what happened to us on 9/11 and said we will defeat our enemies. Liberals saw what happened to us and said we must understand our enemies."

Yup, there is nothing quite like focusing on defeating an enemy that you don't understand. And once you eliminate the tricky part about needing to understand your enemy, there's no pesky learning curve to slow you down. Just set your goal at, say, deposing Saddam, send in your Army to depose him, and declare Mission Accomplished. No need to plan for a post invasion, just bring vases for the flowers thrown at our feet.

See, Democrats just don't get how these action plans work. Democrats insist on success plans which take the focus completely away from action and instead puts it on, um, success. So, yeah, I get the difference between Republicans and Democrats that Rove is trying to make here. So it doesn’t shock me that, quoting from Reuters, "the CIA now believes the Iraq insurgency poses an international threat and may produce better-trained Islamic terrorists than the 1980s Afghanistan war that gave rise to Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda". In that case I'm sure this Administration will just whip up another action plan.

But this commentary wasn’t through self expressing yet, not at all. Reading on one discovers that Rove wasn't content just describing past differences between Republicans and Democrats, he goes on to drag Senator Dick Durbin into his story. Durbin of course is the Democrat who compared some interrogation methods used at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp with things he might associate with the Nazis and other repressive regimes.

Quoting from Associated Press a last time: "He (that’s Rove referring to Durbin here) said the statements have been broadcast throughout the Middle East, putting American troops in greater danger. Durbin has since apologized for the remarks. “

'No more needs to be said about the motives of liberals,' Rove said."

Here's the thing though. Durbin was reacting to reports about what went down at Gitmo that had ALREADY been broadcast all over the world. So what are the odds, you figure, that those wild eyed jihadists who the C.I.A. describes in the Reuters article, were like totally cool with this torture news UNTIL Durbin opened up his big mouth about it? What are the odds that Durbin was going to push them over any edge that they weren't already leaping off of? I suppose you might say that Durbin’s comments kept the story in the news for an extra day. Of course you can also say that the Republican reaction to Durbin's comments kept the story in the news for an extra week.

This is what I think. I think the kind of Muslims who were already angry enough with Americans to blow themselves up with suicide bombs trying to kill us didn't need Durbin's commentary to rile them up. I think the news reports alone about the Guantanamo Bay prison camp were enough. Actually, I think the photos shown all around the globe of American soldiers torturing and humiliating Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib were more than enough to cause that reaction, but then again I am one of those Democrats who thinks it is important to actually understand our enemies.

In fact I think the Gitmo news reminded all the insurgents and terrorists and potential terrorists of those very same Abu Ghraib photos. Hell, I think the Gitmo news reminded Senator Durbin of those Abu Ghraib photos. I know it reminded ME of them. My understanding of Arab pride and the Islamic world leads me to believe that many people in that part of the world react very poorly to being tortured and humiliated by Western occupiers. It makes them want to kill us in general and our soldiers specifically, putting American troops in greater danger.

If I were a U.S. Senator, that would bother me, a lot. I'm not a U.S. Senator and it still bothers me a lot. As does the C.I.A. report that says Iraq is now a terrorist training ground. And if they are right, and I think they are, we have this to look forward to: “Once the insurgency ends, Islamic militants are likely to disperse as highly organized battle-hardened combatants capable of operating throughout the Arab-speaking world and in other regions including Europe". The Reuters article goes on at some length with more gloomy details, including many concerning direct threats to the United States.

So much is explained between these two stories that my computer screen so graciously compared for me; all the consequences of our invasion of Iraq which, if I am to believe Karl Rove, was a direct consequence of 9/11. Well this Dem admits that he still doesn't fully get an Iraq invasion as a consequence of 9/11.

How on Earth did we let this happen?

looking like a good idea?

I concede that Rove would have a legitimate point if, say, they were kicking ass and stopping terrorist from exploding nuclear bombs in Manhattan, or if there were fascist armies rolling through the middle east and the US stepped forward to defend peace-loving democratic nations from invasion. You wouldn't want to be a member of the go-slow, let's have a criminal investigation party if those were the circumstances.

However, I think Rove is trying to plant these seeds today because they must be realizing that the perception they created of imminent threats is falling apart. I think they're worried that a lot of voters might be watching Cold Case, or Missing Persons, or CSI and thinking, hmmm, why'd can't we do it that way and they're reading the DSM and thinking, why'd we invade?

...and wrong people.

I wouldn't brag about this if I were Rove. It's one thing to 'defeat enemies'...but it's a war crime to kill hundreds of thousands of innocent human beings that had nothing to do with 9-11.

It good that Rove is finally admitting that they think like savages that kill first and ask questions later. Perhaps he'll get a chance to explain all this at the war crimes tribunal, trial and impeachment of George 'warrior king' Bush.

20. This man's boss needs to be frogmarched to The Hague, along with Cheney,
Rummy and the entire neocon cabal--who, when we were attacked by Osama bin Laden, pivoted and, instead, went after the wrong monster--Saddam Hussein. And at what price in lives, treasure, and our global standing.

This kind of obvious crap worked in 2002, so Rove is apparently going to try it again for 2006. Patriotism is indeed the last refuge of soundrels. And I pray the American people are waking up to the criminals in the White House.

22. "Turd Blossom" serving in Vietnam? Surely you jest!
Rove, or "Turd blossom" as Bush** allegedly calls him ( how appropo!), was born Dec 25, 1950. He dropped out of the University of Utah in 1971, not to do his patriotic duty and serve in Vietnam, but to ply his "prankster" skills as executive director of the College Republicans.

Interesting...in an interview with Jim Lehrer last year, Rove said when speaking about Kerry and the Vietnam War: "... I understand strong feelings about the war, I was a youngster then, but I remember how strong the feelings were."

Youngster? No more or less than the other "youngsters" who were fighting and dying in Vietnam while he was organizing dirty tricks through the College Republicans on behalf of Nixon's '72 campaign. He seems to have trouble recalling that time. I'll bet there are a lot of Vets who wish they had the same trouble.

Every bit the flaming ass -- er, Turd Blossom -- one would expect.

Don't get 9/11? You're joking right?!?
I GET IT: Our (S)SELECTED-OFFICIAL let us down!!! HE FAILED! (I know, stick to what you are good at, right?)

He was too busy (a) going on vacation, and (b) "servicing" the energy conglomerates to pay attention to the memos that did everything put a picture of a plane next to the WTC with a big red "X" on it. Last time I looked, the presidential office doesn't come with training wheels. You don't get a do-over. When you put your hand on that bible and take the oath of office, YOU are responsible for the security and well-being of our nation. There are no more Clinton did this back in xxxx excuses... Because of the war-on-terra, GWB has been given a free-pass on virtually any topic: unemployment/job growth, spending, the economy, civil liberties. You name it. Dems need to do a better job getting the msg out about what a FAILURE this administration is -- and how RESPONSIBLE this administration is for all the messes we are in.

Lastly, Al Qaida was responsible for 9/11. Somebody want to hand Karl a map and show him how far apart Iraq and Afganistan are? He's lumping 9/11 and Iraq together again and I refuse to accept that lie.
