Edited on Thu Jun-23-05 02:30 PM by funkybutt
Louisiana Activist Network (you may remember us from the Jazz Funeral for Democracy) is organizing a PEACE TRAIN from New Orleans to Washington,DC, picking up activist groups across the South on our way to represent the solid antiwar majority on the government's streets on September 24, 2005. We can fill a train if we lash things together properly. Southerners who wish to get in on this gig should start talking to us here --> http://www.newdemocracyrising.com/messageboard.asp

ALL ABOARD!!!

This could be an incredible life experience. Please get a group together and join us. One way tickets from New Orleans just over $100.
Here's a link to the Amtrak schedule (select "Crescent" as the route ---> http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/Page/Schedules_Index_Page&c=Page&cid=1080072922206&ssid=3

3. The links work for me
on the amtrack link I think you may have to select the "Cresent"

Although activists are welcome to grab their own train that may not be on our route to converge on DC in time for the march.

More details on the march and other activities are available at

4. Tennessee isn't on this particular route BUT...
Feel free to organize your gruop to meet us at one of the stops along the way. Maybe an Amtrak train, bus, or flight could put y'all in place to join us at one of the stops. OR, you could create your own Peace Train from Tennessee. There are groups from the Southwest discussing creating their own.

5. And the theme song will be _____?
Sounds like a great trip. The "Crescent" used to be a great train. I last rode it in the 1970s. I'll try to join you. I'll board in Greenville, SC, if it works out.

6. I'm "High on the Peace Train"......
Now I've been happy lately, thinking about the good things to come
And I believe it could be, something good has begun

Oh I've been smiling lately, dreaming about the world as one
And I believe it could be, some day it's going to come

Cause out on the edge of darkness, there rides a peace train
Oh peace train take this country, come take me home again

Now I've been smiling lately, thinking about the good things to come
And I believe it could be, something good has begun

Oh peace train sounding louder
Glide on the peace train
Come on now peace train
Yes, peace train holy roller

Everyone jump upon the peace train
Come on now peace train

Get your bags together, go bring your good friends too
Cause it's getting nearer, it soon will be with you

Now come and join the living, it's not so far from you
And it's getting nearer, soon it will all be true

Now I've been crying lately, thinking about the world as it is
Why must we go on hating, why can't we live in bliss

Cause out on the edge of darkness, there rides a peace train
Oh peace train take this country, come take me home again

8. Here's a list
I'm not sure if people are going to buy up blocks of rooms or not. The initial idea was to keep it simple...by simply getting people to buy a ticket on this train.I suspect someone will step up and begin organizing this. The problem is: It's a bit risky to pay for a bunch of rooms for people you don't even know. I imagine one could get burned pretty badly. I looked at expedia and there are tons available. Please stay posted on the message board for more updates. Here's a few you may want to look into:

a little more expensive-but the group rates look good

www.washingtonterracehotel.com
Holiday Inn Washington-Central/White House
Crowne Plaza

a little more affordable:
Holiday Inn Central DC (Rhode Island Avenue)
one mile from the White House
4 blocks to the Metro
$129

Residence Inn by Marriott (Vermont Avenue)
one-half mile from WH
2 blocks from Metro
complete complementary breakfast
$139

Holiday Inn Downtown DC (14th Street)
5 blocks from the WH
3 blocks from Metro
very near Union Station
$149
