Just like Vietnam! 6,000 US Servicemembers Desert Iraq! Amazin! |
|
"6,000 US servicemembers have deserted in Iraq? Wow. 6/23"It's just like you don't know what who it's going to be from one day to the next. You can't get rid of the whole population."
SNIP ......... Rather than face incarceration in America, Key said he decided to head north.
His prospects of finding sanctuary in Canada are uncertain, however. Another American soldier who fled the military before he was to be shipped to Iraq, Jeremy Hinzman, was refused refugee status.
In a decision last March, Immigration and Refugee Board ruled Hinzman had not demonstrated a well-founded fear of persecution should he return to the United States.
He has since filed a Federal Court challenge to the ruling in hopes of staving off deportation.
Canada should welcome such ex-soldiers, Siksay said, inviting the message it would send the world.
"We don't want soldiers who check their conscience at the door when they sign up," the NDP MP said.
To the U.S. army, though, such soldiers are criminals who should face court martial and the possibility of a prison term.
According to the Pentagon, less than 1 per cent of the army has deserted from the Iraq war. Of those 6,000 soldiers, 150 are believed to be seeking refugee status in Canada http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/1119448188359_114857388/?hub=Canada

6. I heard on my local news that there is talk about the government |
|
collecting the social security numbers and grade point averages of good military candidates for future recruitment. This way they could "target" the best for service instead of waiting to see if they just happen to run into a recruiter. Democrats say the collecting of numbers is illegal without a draft and to "target" specific kids is against the recruitment rules with or without a draft.
They are trying to really bend the rules to get our kids into Iraq ... and now they want our very best!

10. Well, around 6000 desertions have been reported since |
|
9/11.
This includes those that have been returned, voluntarily or after arrest, and includes a few who have deserted more than once (the number is desertions, not deserters, but the number is few and not especially important).
"6,000 US servicemembers have deserted in Iraq?" No. At least not if the published numbers are correct.
