I like how right-wingers make up caricatures of Democrats and.....
proceed to make points against something they completely made up. For example:

"After 9/11 instead of wanting to go after and kill terrorists, Liberals consider them victims."

Ok, I never heard anybody call the 9/11 hijackers "victims." In an odd way they might be, I suppose, but nobody thinks that what they did is a pitiable act. It would be the stretch of all stretches to call them straight up victims. I paraphrased that comment from an op-ed in our local paper months ago. Actually, Bush and Co. have pretty much did everything except go after the terrorist organization tied to 9-11. Instead of going after them right away, it took three weeks to even start a bombing campaign and then the stated goal was just to overthrow the Taliban and not to capture or kill bin Laden.

I particularly love the "liberals want to take away your guns" caricature. That's a classic.

1. They Demonize
It's a tactic right out of Mein Kampf: Make the other side look ridiculous or evil by the techniques of overstatement and misrepresentation.

I learned it as the "Big Lie" theory. Worked for Hitler too, for awhile.

I'm reminded of the Joel Gray character's joke at the end of his cabaret act == he does a dance with a gorilla-suit, and makes a crack about how she's "not even Jewish." Hitler demonized the Jewish people; the Bushites demonize Democrats.

When they feel their power slipping away, it becomes even MORE vicious.

2. I actually think
this talking point comes from the fact that a lot of us were wondering--why in the hell would they DO something like this? What's the reasoning behind it?

It's not "because they hate us for our freedoms."

That's just ridiculous. Many of us stopped and tried to consider where they were coming from...understand your enemy. One of the primary concepts in The Art of War. If you can't/don't bother to understand your enemy, you're fighting a many-armed opponent in a dark room.

5. David Cross Said It Best
When he likened Bush's "The Terrorists Hate Our Freedom" mantra to an adult talking to a six-year old.

"Why did the bad men crash the planes into the buildings?"

"It's because the terrorists hate our freedom."

"But I read on Lexis-Nexis that Bin Laden was upset with U.S. military bases in Saudi Arabia..."

"SHHH!!! NO! The terrorists hate our freedom! Just that!"

7. "understanding" is for wimps, dontcha know.....
What struck me about Rove's blather was the underlieing message
that trying for any thoughtful and informed response to 9/11 (like
seeking answers as to why it happened!) is a pussy liberal reaction.

Conservatives, on the other hand, went for the True Manly response of
"don't ask questions, just get yer gun and start shooting!"

Stephen Ducat (The Wimp Factor) and others have spoken about how
Bushco has great appeal for insecure men, men who want their most
simplistic and traditional views of manhood reinforced. I really noticed
that in Rove's comments. He was deliberately working to rabel-rouse that
base.

8. As a former caricature artist I am deeply offended by the comparison.
In the art of caricature, exaggeration is important, but it is not the sole defining characteristic of this form of art. In order to maintain a likeness, we must veiw our targets objectively, and base our images on the truth of what we see. We don't just exaggerate everything, we emphisize what is important, the features that define a person, and make them identifiable. I use to tell people that when I'd make their caricature, it would look like them, only more so.

These bastards do not base their exaggerations on a kernel of truth. What they do isn't really an exaggeration, it's a bald face lie. That's what they do, they lie. In some instances, even lying could be considered an artform, but there's no art in what they do, I mean, they don't even lie well. A proper analogy for their method of communication would be them taking a shit on a napkin, and trying to tell you that it's a portrait of Condi Rice, okay... bad analogy, looks more like Ann Coulter anyway, ...what with the corn...
