Sign John Kerry's petition calling on Bush to fire Karl Rove!
http://www.johnkerry.com/petition/rove.php

An Open Letter to President Bush

Mr. President, your most senior advisor has purposely twisted the truth about a great moment of American unity for political gain. You cannot remain silent. Fire Karl Rove.

Dear President Bush,

In the days following the 9/11 attacks, you movingly spoke of the unity of purpose emanating all across America. Now, Karl Rove, your top political aide, wants us to believe that you weren't telling the truth -- that Americans were offering "therapy and understanding to the attackers." You cannot remain silent as your most senior advisor purposely twists the truth about a great moment of American unity for political gain.

It isn't the first time Karl Rove has crossed the line. It needs to be the last. I call on you to thoroughly reject his cheap, divisive efforts to challenge the patriotism of your political opponents. It's time to fire Karl Rove.

Sincerely,

http://www.johnkerry.com/petition/rove.php

8. Letter before the Sen Intel Comm
to get hearings:

KG posted that hearings would go before the Senate Intelligence Committee. The Rules of that committee state:

http://intelligence.senate.gov/rules%20of%20procedure.h...

Rule 6. Investigations
No investigation shall be initiated by the Committee unless at least five members of the Committee have specifically requested the Chairman or the Vice Chairman to authorize such an investigation. Authorized investigations may be conducted by members of the Committee and/or designated Committee staff members.

The members of the Committee, from whom five sigs are needed are:

REPUBLICANS
Pat Roberts, Kansas Chairman
Orrin G. Hatch, Utah
Mike Dewine, Ohio
Christopher S. Bond, Missouri
Trent Lott, Mississippi
Olympia J. Snowe, Maine
Chuck Hagel, Nebraska
Saxby Chambliss, Georgia

DEMOCRATS
John D. Rockefeller IV West Virginia, Vice Chairman
Carl Levin, Michigan
Dianne Feinstein, California
Ron Wyden, Oregon
Evan Bayh, Indiana
Barbara A. Mikulski, Maryland
Jon S. Corzine, New Jersey

Ex Officio Members
Bill Frist, Tennessee
Harry Reid, Nevada
John Warner, Virginia

5 Sigs needed. Last update was that they have 4.

So, are you going to kiss his ass when he gets hearings?

25. Think about this one
This is the Committee that has oversight on the pre-war intelligence assessments. The paper that was researched and authorized by this committee on this is at their website at: http://intelligence.senate.gov/

This is where an investigation, a real investigation with subpoena power should go. I want action on the DSM as much as anyone else on DU, but I want real action, not something that is 'here today and gone tomorrow.'

Sen. Kerry is not a member of the Senate Select Comm. So he has to go through others or submit a letter. The machinery of Congress does move at a glacier-like pace, but it does move. This is the right thing to do. It may take longer, but it will be official.

If Kerry can get the five sigs, it's out of his hands. (Again, not on that committee.) Then he can give a floor speech or press conference and push for action. But I prefer the real action first.

101. Excuse me?

Is KKKarl also a Skull and Bones fraternity brother of Bush* and Kerry? If not, all Kerry has to do is informally go through fraternity channels to get KKKarl fired. Of course if KKKarl is also a frat brother, nothing can be done and letters are pointless.

37. AHHHHHhhhh! THOSE signatures! Thank you for this update!
I didn't know what his letter was aimed at, I got the impression this was another letter (like Conyers') that was asking * admin to release info/answer questions on DSM.

Couldn't understand, in that context, why one sig would be so important... clearly 1 sig is very very important when trying to get an intel committee hearing.

Are you sure they only have 4...I thought the word was they were waiting on 1 sig. Doesn't mean they don't have enough sigs, but maybe they're waiting on a fence-sitting repub (Roberts or Hagel) to lend 'bipartisanship' to the investigation.

39. Select Committee on Intel is secretive by nature
This is a committee where most of the meetings are done behind closed doors. We have to wait and hear. No one knows (outside of Sen Kerry I guess.) But the rules of the committee that I quoted state that you need 5 sigs to get a meeting. They need the 5th sig. I have no idea if they are going for a Repub or not. (Sorry, that is pretty inside baseball for me.)

44. I don't have the link LC
Sorry.

Also, there are other things that I don't know about this process of getting sigs and getting a hearing for the Intel Comm.

-- Can the Rethugs thwart hearings even with the 5 sigs?

-- If the Rethugs decide to thwart hearings even with the five sigs, what happens next? (Kerry will get no credit for doing anything as it will be a case of 'the dog that didn't bark.' If nothing happens, then how can you report on it.

-- If there are no official hearings, can Kerry & other Dems petition Sen. Reid for the unofficial Senatorial Democratic Investigative Hearings, like the ones they held on the false Mercury Report? How else can the DSM enter the dialogue on Capitol Hill?

I don't know the answers to this.

http://www.rawstory.com/news/2005/kerry_downing_street_letter_624.htm

It says signed by Senators Johnson, Corzine, Reed, Lautenberg, Boxer, Kennedy, Harkin, Bingaman, and Durbin. By my count (assuming that was meant to be Reid, not Reed), that's only 2 of the Dems from the Intel Committee.

So where's that leave us?

16. Here is the email that was sent with the petitopm.
Dear friend,

Just hours after learning about an outrageous speech delivered by Karl Rove, President Bush's most senior advisor, I went to the Senate floor -- and I spoke from my heart. I want to share those words with you -- not as a Democrat or Republican, not as a liberal or conservative -- but as an American.

I've attached part of my speech to the end of this email. But, before you read what I said, look again at what Karl Rove said:

(P)erhaps the most important difference between conservatives and liberals can be found in the area of national security. Conservatives saw the savagery of 9/11 and the attacks and prepared for war; liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers.

I hope you will join me right now in signing an open letter to the President urging him to thoroughly reject Karl Rove's purposeful attack on the patriotism of those who dare ask the tough questions that best protect American troops. Sign our open letter to President Bush now:

http://www.johnkerry.com/petition/rove.php

This isn't the first time that Karl Rove and other White House officials have sought to divide America in ways that make it harder to keep our country safe and our democracy strong. But, it should be the last. That's why I ended my speech with a call on President Bush to fire Karl Rove. It is the only way the President can make it clear that he rejects Rove's effort to distort one of the most unified and patriotic moments in American history into a cheap, divisive, political applause line.

That, of course, is what is most outrageous about Karl Rove's claim that President Bush's political opponents offered "therapy and understanding for our attackers." It isn't true. In the days after 9/11, there were no Democrats, no Republicans. We were all Americans, standing together. President Bush acknowledged that unity in a clear and compelling way at the time.

Now, Karl Rove is purposely twisting those days of unity in order to divide us for political gain. I hope you will act right now to join a growing chorus of Americans calling on the President to fire Karl Rove.

http://www.johnkerry.com/petition/rove.php

Please act right now. Sign our open letter to the President and pass it on to others. All Americans have to speak with one powerful voice in response to this outrage. I will continue speaking out and I know I can count on you to stand with me.

Sincerely,

John Kerry

17. Why are we wasting so much time on signing a damn petition
Instead of being outraged over what Turd Blossom said we need to be sending money and spending time to help organize the various state parties especially in Ohio and Florida. There is no way we can win in '08 and beyond if the Democrats don't win one preferablly both of these states due to the shift of electoral votes from Democratic strongholds in the NE to the South ( especially FL) andthe SW.

The problem is in Ohio every statewide elected office is held by a Rethugs and there will be no election reform on the federal level until after 2008 and that's if at least we win back the White House and one chamber of Congress and we won't be able to win the White House in '08 unless we control the voting apparatus in Ohio and/or Florida and only way to do that is to elect a progressive Secretary of State in OH and progessive Democratic governor in FL (of course currently the Secretary of State is 'appointed' by the Governor).

Let's use our time and money productively instead of allowing them to distract us!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and WTF is wrong with Maine. It voted for Kerry last year but it has two Rethug US Senators who can't get their noses far enough up *'s butt.

19. Why I really like these comments:
I've been very concerned that recent RW statements are a trap for Democrats to try and prove that they're "just as tough as Republicans," so that

1. Democrats will go along with whatever new bellicose policy is pursued. (Consider: (a) Goss has said they can't go after Bin Laden because of too much "respect for sovereign nations"; (b) elsewhere (Fox?) it's been speculated that Bin Laden could be in Iran; and (c) Bush is making a major speech on Tuesday.)

2. Democrats will keep mum on the torture photos in order not to look too 'soft.'

Yesterday there was even a Newsday poll posted that asked whether Democrats are too soft on terrorists.

Kerry's response above doesn't say "We are too as tough as you!" It focuses on Rove and on Americans. (And elsewhere Kerry has said that the people owed an apology are the 9/11 victims' families.)

And while the DNC response (http://www.democrats.org/blog/comment/00012258.html) is generally good, I fear it may play into what I outlined above.

23. This makes me angry
Rove stirs up an ant hill with an intentionally inflamatory remark and the dems run around all outraged demanding apologies and writing petitions.

LAST WEEK we learn that Abu Ghraib photos and videos will be released and will show far worse than we've seen (and congress has seen them already by the way), a multitude of sources point to WMD deception and illegal invasion, and more information surfaces that we used napalm in Iraq.

THIS WEEK, we hear from the CIA and the Pentagon that Iraq is in far worse shape than our adminsitration is telling us, that everyone knew the Iraq invasion was illegal, and that Halliburton may have just been awarded another 1 billion for more prisons in Cuba......

....and all of this generates far less attention than Rove stepping out and dropping a stink bomb.

I'm for dem leaders denouncing these remarks...BUT FOR CHRIST'S SAKE, HIT HARD AND MOVE ON TO REAL ISSUES THAT REALLY MATTER. This sideshow is a waste of time.

A LOT more. Drop mentions of IMPEACHMENT and the Downing Street Minutes with your EVERY breath - every chance you get - to every sort of person, both your reps and other civilians. Give money if you can to your local Democratic or liberal organizations.

I'm afraid the White House will look at any petition from John Kerry and laugh hysterically as they hit the delete button. Kerry's heart is in the correct place, but his mind is not. He should be hitting this a LOT harder. And in public. Why doesn't he hold a few press conferences or other media events? Why doesn't he make more noise?

....I want to add to the list of recent important news items that congress should be focusing on instead of Rove:

32. Rove was speaking the truth MOSTLY
Its just a "point of view" .... but the whole therapy thing was cheap and insulting...

Rove got two things right in his statement " Conservatives saw the savagery of 9/11 and the attacks and prepared for war." thats fair: a war on Osama Bin Laden... Thats the type of additude that Rove shows for his political enemies... you attack without thinking! But the war on Iraq?

The other sentence that I agree with was " Liberals saw what happened to us and said we must understand our enemies." You are damned straight.. but I see that statement differently, we want to understand the enemy so that we can negotiate diplomatically without having to spend trillions of $$ and thousands of lives so that you can illegally hand over duffel bags full of cash to your friends without a paper trail.

HOWEVER, he made a statement that infuriated me: I am deeply offended that Karl Rove would accuse ME personally, without knowing ME of wanting to "offer therapy and understanding for our attackers"???? Rove doesn't know ME, Rove doesn't know other democrats ... democrats IN THE SERVICE or any American citizen's motivation for that matter. Honestly the only threat to our national security is Karl Rove and his band of thieves with their refusal to cooperate with other nations and to hand oil fields over to oil companies. Get out of my country!!!!

I AM A LIBERAL AND IF KARL ROVE AND THE GOP DOESN'T LIKE IT THAT IS JUST TOO DAMN BAD. Liberalism and progressive beliefs are as American as apple pie. Religious zealotry is NOT.

45. Boy I got wordy on that one
But here's what I wrote:

"WHERE IS BIN LADEN! If the Republicans are so good at taking the fight to the enemy, why is the true enemy of 9/11 still free? No, the Repbublicans are much better at involking the specter of 9/11 for political gain than they are at actually keeping us safe.

I, along with many Americans, stood with a candle in my hand, honoring the victims of 9/11 on that first Friday after it happened. We were unified then. I was willing to give Bush the benefit of the doubt then. He took that unity and that trust and used it for political gain. Neither he nor Rove should be allowed to do that any more.

I am a Democrat, a Christian and an American. I am sick of being made to feel like a second-hand Christian and a second-hand American for the simple reason that I *AM* a Democrat.

FIRE KARL ROVE!"

50. Would rather he work on getting one more member of intel committee to
get a hearing on the Downing Street memo and the Bush adminstration use of intelligence.

Remember Chairman Pat Roberts said there would be an investigation of whether the Bush administration misused the intelligence they were given in the runup to the war in Iraq after the election (so as not to politicize the election), but amazingly enough, since Dubya won the election in November, Roberts has remained silent on this issue.

52. I doubt the Top Democrats will do anything about the DSM.
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 01:40 PM by Dr Fate
They wont even talk about it on TV.

They want it to just go away.

That is my gut at this point-the Base has begged and begged- but they could not even help Conyers promote his hearings- they never even mention those hearings on TV.

But now they can attack Rove on internet sites and say "See- we DO fight Bush- now, about that check."

The pattern is clear to me. Avoid controversial issues except in forums that donors see. Only get high-profile (On TV) about "safe" issues- as not to upset swing voters.

It's a strategy that I disagree with.

57. The best place for DSM to go forward is in the intel committee. JK needs
one more committee member to sign his letter requesting an investigation.

I do agree with you about the Democratic leadership timidity, but I like the things the "tough as nails" Harry Reid has said.

58. the best place for DSM is PUBLIC DISCOURSE around water coolers.
otherwise it will all die behind closed doors.

Then DEMs will say "Oh nooo- we tried to fight Bush, but the Republicans killed it in comittee- we didnt have the numbers- so sorry- now, about that check..."

The best way to make this big is to get the public talking about it. You cant get the public to talk about it if the Top Democrats cant talk about it.

Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 01:59 PM by flpoljunkie
There is no reason that all of the Democrats on the Intelligence Committee not to sign Kerry's letter calling for the investigation Roberts promised.

There will be a problem if one of the five signatures required must come from the Republicans on the committee.

Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 02:03 PM by Dr Fate
That is just my opinion.

I've offically given up on Kerry and Dean on this- they are blowing it.

They could not even help Conyers promote his hearings. Where was the mass email alerts on the hearings?????

Seems they can send out an email on "safe issues" every week, so I know they have time.

I see the writting on the wall- the DSM is "too hot"- they will ignore it in public and pretend they are "working on it behind closed doors."

When it dies down they will say "we tried- but the GOP/media is to blame- now about that check..."

It will work on most, but not on me.

60. It is possible that the Dems are trying to get
hearings. Official hearings. Anything official means that you have to go through the committee procedures which takes longer. Plus, Kerry is not on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, which makes it harder to affect the hearing process. (I think this also means, but I am not sure, that if there is a hearing, it won't involve direct input from Kerry, except maybe as a witness. So, even if he wins, it's a hand-off. Is this right?)

Yesterday's hearing on Iraq in front of the Senate Armed Services Committee was great. Levin, Kennedy and Byrd really lit into Rumsfeld yesterday. It was the front page of lots of US newspapers and was on all the TV news shows. I would like to see something like this on DSM. I think that required subpoena power. That means official hearings.

What else do you want done to get the DSM into the public square. I think Kerry's idea of getting the Sen. Intel Comm to hold hearings is a good one. Maybe it will get print and TV coverage which might push the issue further into the public arena. So, you go through the process.

62. What happens when they dont get the hearings? (And they wont.)
Then they'll say- "Oh well, we tried, time to move on- now about that check..."

That is my gut at this point. They wont go on TV and raise the issue- but they can point to these closed door conversations they say they are having- that we or no one else will never hear- and then blame the media.

They dont WANT this to be an issue. The "strategists" have ruled that it is "too hot- Micheal Moore stuff...turns off swing voters..."

If they did want it to be an issue, they would all be on TV floating trial ballons.

65. I addressed this up thread but
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 02:19 PM by TayTay
if the official hearings don't happen (and I think it is worth the try, this is the committee that put out at least one Pre-War Intel Assessment report) then Harry Reid should go for unofficial Democratic Senatorial Investigative hearings. They have done this a couple of times this year. They did it on the waste of money associated with the contracts in Iraq and they did one on the Mercury Report. (There may have been more, but I saw some of those two hearings.)

The problem with this is that these are unofficial hearings without subpoena power. So, you can't compel a witness to testify. Also, the press coverage is spotty and is done if the press feels like doing it. (Which is very dicey at best.) The other criticism I have of these Dem Committees is that the Dems have a very spotty attendance record at them. (Sometimes there is only one Senator present, which doesn't make the hearing look serious.) This is better than nothing, but not as good as an official hearing.

Kerry could make floor speeches and hold a press conference, but I don't think he would get anywhere with it. This is very big deal and it needs to be dealt with as such. I will give the Intel Comm hearing a while longer to work. But I understand the process a little and how it can take a while. The Senate goes on break next Friday and won't return until July 9th. I would bet that hearings couldn't possibly take place until after that. (Maybe way after that.)

The Democrats do not have the power to call hearings in this Congress. They control neither the committees, the purse or subpoena power. It is extremely difficult to get anything investigated that Rethug don't want investigated. How do you get around that?

68. Or, all the "star" Democrats could bring it up everytime they go on TV.
And get the whole country talking about it.

We dont necessarily need offical investigations- and we will never get them anyway. All we need is a strong public perception that these memos show that Bush lied.

If we were not so scared to go on TV and make charges, we could use it as a huge wedge issue in 2006 & 2008- since most Americans are now realizing that they were lied too.

I dont even know why I spin my wheels- I can see that this issue is DEAD.

The writing is on the wall- the DEM "strategists" have ruled that it is "too hot."

Sure- they say all kinds of tough things online or on CSPAN where donors and political junkies can see it- but on regular TV it's all "safe" stuff.

When their non "safe" stuff winds up on TV, they dutifully apologize for it.

72. Conservative hypocrisy
FYI -- I have an article at JABBS, at http://jabbs.blogspot.com, that includes the White House reaction to Rove's comments (they don't want an apology, big surprise).

Check out McClellan's Orwellian responses in the transcript that I've included.

Also, the article talks about the hypocritical stance of conservatives. They yell and scream when a Democrat, such as Dick Durbin, says something questionable. But they are silent when Santorum, Sessions and Norquist say things equally questionable.

And it is working we have just devoted another few days to a useless effort of confrontation and back and forth. Rove doesn't care what Democrats think, or about the American people as a whole, not really. He doesn't give a fuck about democracy, its just gets in our way.

Like the Smear vets, we can't just ignore Rove and decide there are more important things to deal with, though there are. What he says about the Dems can't be allowed to stick in the minds of potential voters.

The Smear Vets weren't really worth spit either, and they didn't care if Kerry responded to them either. But bullshit needs an answer.

But you're right, we need to keep up the overall pressure re: Bolton, DSM et al. We'll do a both/and.
