They're conditioning us to accept torture
If they get away with it by stacking the deck against repraisal, it will indeed become "old news" and torture will become an accepted procedure of the US Government.

Despite everything in the Constitution.

To condition us to accept torture, they are guilty of torturing us right now, in attempting to lower our expectations of our valuation of life. They are guilty of the abomination of asking us to accept a lower expectation of other's rights to freedom from torture.

Zero tolerance. Zero. These people are abominations. They are slowly "tightening the noose" and their actions WILL become standard operating procedure if we accept or allow one little bit of it to gain a foothold.

We CAN become inured to images of violence through repeated exposure. We are adaptable creatures. The trick is to choose what to reject, vociferously.

2. And Dubin apologized for putting down torture.
Our leaders are folding on us and letting them do this. Next they'll be torturing people here.

4. Of course. Some DU'ers even advocate torture.
"If your daughter was kidnaped & was smothering underground, wouldn't you want the kidnapers tortured so they'd speak up?"

Or something like that. Taking the plot from a TV show or adventure novel.

5. You are exactly correct . . .
Long before the Iraq war began I heard a retired CIA counterintel director give a speech. The very first thing he did was blame American "squeamishness" (that's the word he used) for 9/11. If only the intelligence community's hands weren't tied after the Church committee revelations, "humint" could be much more effective at stopping terrorists. As it was, he said, intelligence gathering depended too much on "signit" and not enough on boots on the ground.

By the end of his talk this guy had the audience supporting by a show of hands covert ops disguised as reporters or aid workers; and torture and assassination, too. The only things the audience wouldn't endorse were undercover agents disguised as members of the clergy and torture carried out on US soil.

Americans torturing people -- check. Just not in our own yard. Transfer suspects to other countries that go for that sort of thing or conduct the "interrogations" US detention centers outside the United States.

It was clear to my friend and I then that the guy's whole performance was about testing the waters and laying the ground. He was an advance man for all we've seen through to today.

Of course, he never described or defined what he meant when he talked about "torture"; no examples or pics or anything. He just guilt tripped folks and played on their fears and had 'em eating out of the palm of his hand.
