15. Heavily Considering Moving more Northwards...
Better Colleges, more to do etc. What are the names of the nice liberal areas one can live in, in NJ? I'm serious. Done w/the right-wing Evangelicals taking over in my area; no culture; war-red-neck types. Oh they have their flags & ribbons but their late-teens/early 20's kids have "not signed-up.

Oh no. Not their kids.

2. They haven't gone home to get
the pulse of their constituents yet.

After the July 4th recess they will sign on in large numbers.

Yea right!

The FINAL list of Senators refusing to oppose lynching
by John in DC - 6/14/2005 12:52:00 PM

I say "final." Ha. We've cross checked our list with a list that reportedly just came from the Senate. And my list below, the one from the previous post, appears correct. So, until further notice, these are the spineless Senators who for some reason or other didn't want to be on the record saying that it was a bad thing that southern senators fillibustered anti-lynching legislation all those years.

I'm going to write more later about why this matters, but let me just say this. We complain about the far right trying to amend the Constitution to ban gays, about Bush lying his way into a war, about the GOP trying to take over and usurp the entire federal judiciary, yet 27% of Republican Senators are still holding out on the wisdom and morality of lynching black people. Think about that. And then ask yourself is it any wonder all these other legislative crimes happen when these bastards can't even agree about lynching? And you thought we had it bad.

Find your Senators' phone number here, and call them:

Lamar Alexander (R-TN)
Robert Bennett (R-UT)
Thad Cochran (R-MS)
Kent Conrad (D-ND) (he's now a cosponsor)
John Cornyn (R-TX)
Michael Crapo (R-ID)
Michael Enzi (R-WY)
Chuck Grassley (R-IA)
Judd Gregg (R-NH)
Orrin Hatch (R-UT)
Trent Lott (R-MS)
Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)
Richard Shelby (R-AL)
Gordon Smith (R-OR) (he's fine)
John Sununu (R-NH)
Craig Thomas (R-WY)
George Voinovich (R-OH)

7. Great thread and....
Edited on Sat Jun-25-05 10:32 AM by ray of light
Thanks for listing both democrats and republicans. AND we should be calling them all, not just democrats!

Listen, please:

HERE is my plan.

1. CALL your senator and representative and find out what their position is on the dsm. Ask them, "What has (insert name) done SPECIFICALLY to call for an investigation of if GWB and DC have violated their oaths of office--if indeed they have committed a high crime and misdemeanor. ASK for them to support an investigation because NO PERSON IS ABOVE THE LAW. Do not let them 'hide' from you...tell them you want to know the specifics: have they made any calls? Have they read the dsm? Have they watched John Conyers and the minority forum? Have they made calls to others asking for an investigation.

2. Write down ALL their answers and post them here and at the democracy cell project http://www.democracycellproject.net at kos and atrios and everywhere else too!

3. Write a letter to the editor, giving your congressman's specific responses, PUBLISH their "lies" or their non-answers. They usually attempt to just hide the truth. Don't let them hide and don't let them dodge. Publish the details in your letter and demand accountability.

http://capwiz.com/pdamerica/mail/compose/?voteid=0&alertid=7656046&target=ML&type=ME&azip=48158

4. Take a copy of your LTE and fax it to the Senator's or Congressman's office. Deluge the newspapers and the radio shows and the Congressman's offices.

5. Take a copy of your letter and post it at every local business you can. Post it on lights, post it on car windshields. Include the capital's number too.

6. Stand at a busy intersection with a sign...INVESTIGATE THE DOWNING STREET MEMO...CALL CONGRESS TODAY! 202-224-3121!

7. If you live near a college campus, bring the latest information on recruitment numbers and the latest information about private firms soliciting 30 million names, addresses, and grades from 16-25 year olds to give to recruiters. Include the DSM and and ask, "Fight here and now or fight in Iraq later!"

And check out the democracy cell project to get useful hints in writing effective letters to the editor. (Look in the forum under "tool Kits".

Now...how does that sound?

Maybe we could change some minds... We'd have to light a pretty large candle under the ass of the blogosphere though.

These guys would be the primary focus.

11. Email your Senators! Request they sign Kerry's letter urging Intel Comm
to complete Phase II of the investigation that Chairman Pat Roberts agreed to in February, 2004--how the administration used the intelligence they gathered in the run up to the Iraq War.

Let's bombard them with emails over the weekend!

Link to Senators' email: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senat...

Senator Kerry's letter, if you would like to include it in your email:

June 22, 2005
The Honorable Pat Roberts, Chairman
The Honorable John D. Rockefeller, IV, Vice Chairman
United States Senate Select Committee on Intelligence
SH-211
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator Roberts and Senator Rockefeller:

We write concerning your committee's vital examination of pre-war Iraq intelligence failures. In particular, we urge you to accelerate to completion the work of the so-called "Phase II" effort to assess how policy makers used the intelligence they received. Last year your committee completed the first phase of a two-phased effort to review the pre-war intelligence on Iraq. Phase I-begun in the summer of 2003 and completed in the summer of 2004-examined the performance of the American intelligence community in the collection and analysis of intelligence prior to the war, including an examination of the quantity and quality of U.S. intelligence on Iraqi weapons of mass destruction and the intelligence on ties between Saddam Hussein's regime and terrorist groups. At the conclusion of Phase I, your committee issued an unclassified report that made an important contribution to the American public's understanding of the issues involved. In February 2004-well over a year ago-the committee agreed to expand the scope of inquiry to include a second phase which would examine the use of intelligence by policy makers, the comparison of pre-war assessments and post-war findings, the activities of the Policy Counterterrorism Evaluation Group (PCTEG) and the Office of Special Plans in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, and the use of information provided by the Iraqi National Congress. The committee's efforts have taken on renewed urgency given recent revelations in the United Kingdom regarding the apparent minutes of a July 23, 2002, meeting between Prime Minister Tony Blair and his senior national security advisors. These minutes-known as the "Downing Street Memo"-raise troubling questions about the use of intelligence by American policy makers-questions that your committee is uniquely situated to address. The memo indicates that in the summer of 2002, at a time the White House was promising Congress and the American people that war would be their last resort, that they believed military action against Iraq was "inevitable." The minutes reveal that President "Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy."

The American people took the warnings that the administration sounded seriously-warnings that were echoed at the United Nations and here in Congress as we voted to give the president the authority to go to war. For the sake of our democracy and our future national security, the public must know whether such warnings were driven by facts and responsible intelligence, or by political calculation. These issues need to be addressed with urgency. This remains a dangerous world, with American forces engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan, and other challenges looming in Iran and North Korea. In this environment, the American public should have the highest confidence that policy makers are using intelligence objectively-never manipulating it to justify war, but always to protect the United States. The contents of the Downing Street Memo undermine this faith and only rigorous Congressional oversight can determine the truth. We urge the committee to complete the second phase of its investigation with the maximum speed and transparency possible, producing, as it did at the end of Phase I, a comprehensive, unclassified report from which the American people can benefit directly.

Sincerely,
John Kerry

Co-signers: Sens. Tim Johnson, Jon Corzine, Jack Reed, Frank Lautenberg, Barbara Boxer, Edward Kennedy, Thomas Harkin, Jeff Bingaman, Richard Durbin

Honestly... This is a disgrace. Maybe it's because it's summer and many of us on-line grass rooters are out and about. Or, Bush & Co. has everyone running ragged (now back to Social Security dismantling... reform my a$$) our rep's can't keep their head above water, much less us.

Notice the DSM is being totally ignored. 1 week of tid-bits on MSNBC, CNN and that's it. It has me bothered, big-time.

18. Always pointing the blame at Kerry no matter what.
That's a pretty shallow approach.

You blame Kerry for working 5 years almost alone on BCCI and never point to any of the 99 other Senators who failed to step up to the plate and help him.

You want to know WHY Kerry doesn't get that much help from other Dems? Because he has been a target for so long with the rightwing that they don't want to risk getting in the crosshairs.

Why hasn't he taken a leading role, and a very public role as others have? Even his much vaunted letter on DSM is more procedural in its intentions than anything else.

22. Think about it...the PROCEDURAL is what counts!
You can stand in front of a mic and sing the star spangled banner and it won't get the job done, but if you actually FORMALLY get the proper forms and protocal done, then YOU ARE ON THE WAY!

Right now it's a few people who officially had the gumption to sign on. The others are testing the waters and waiting to see the reaction in the real world. That's why we need to pick up steam on this. Everything can not sit on Kerry's shoulders or John Conyers shoulders alone.

It's time to stop firing bullets of hate at our own team players and instead take the advice of other great leaders: organize, organize, organize!

who diminish its importance everyday that helps the media and the spinners turn it into a nonstory, worse than the spin that Watergate was just a third=rate burglary.

Diminish BCCI every day just to get your digs in and diminish Kerry...that's what you and others do and that's what BushInc wants and needs.

You complain that Kerry's letter is "procedural" yet you FAIL to explain how any other procedure or action would lead to an official investigation.

Posted at http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x1884955 .

Dear ____________:

I hope you that you are already familiar with Bob Fitrakis's excellent article at http://www.freepress.org/departments/display/19/2005/13... . If not, I hope you will read it as soon as possible and with great care.

The article opens as follows: "The Democratic National Committee's investigation into Ohio's 2004 presidential election irregularities is the perfect postscript to the party's 'election protection' efforts last fall: it is a shocking indictment of a party caught completely off-guard in its most heated presidential campaign in years, and a party still doesn't fully understand what happened and how to avoid a repeat in the future."

I am one of the "internet activists" who during the last eight months have spent literally hundreds of hours working for election reform, media reform, and greater awareness of Bush administration deception during the run-up to the Iraq invasion -- even while working two jobs.

Although prior to 2004, I had never contributed a dime to any political cause, since last November I have contributed close to $1,000 to various efforts in aid of these issues or in support of Democratic politicians. This is four times what I have ever given to any charity, and I am a "tither".

I believe the Democratic Party now faces a real prospect of significant gains in the 2006 elections, and I believe that I and my fellow activists deserve much of the credit.

I am writing to tell you I am deeply frustrated and angered by the results of the Democratic National Committee's investigation into Ohio's 2004 presidential election irregularities.

I am also frustrated and angered by the failure of more Democratic Senators to sign on to Senator Kerry's call for investigation into the Downing Street Memo and related matters.

We have been knocking ourselves out out here, and we feel betrayed.

I find it difficult to believe that everyone with the DNC is so ignorant or distracted that none of them "gets it", but I have yet to hear a reasonable explanation for the party's failures that isn't even worse.

I would greatly appreciate receiving a reply from your office that explains these failures, including both those described in Mr. Fitrakis's article and also the failure of so many Democratic Senators to sign on the Senator Kerry's call for DSM investigation.

Thank you for your consideration.

But, I really want to encourage you to write your Senator (dem or republican) and about the DSM and forming a bi-partison investigation. Right is right--in this case, and ignoring it is plain old wrong.

Please make sure you forward lte's too.

30. Kerry needs to ask folks to write them in one of his mass e-mails
So far, he has not sent out a mass e-mail on the DSM.

He should do that and ask folks to contact their Senators to sign the letter.

That is one way he could get the signatures- a lot of folks still dont know about the DSM or the need to contact congress over hearings- so going on TV would work too.

As it is, I'm sure all DUers are writing/calling congress & the media- but Kerry's e-mail data base is much, much larger than DU.

He should. I know the letter was 'leaked' to some folks on the web, but your point is 100% accurate. Sen. Kerry sould use his db to pinpoint support for the initiative. (As a MA resident, I should get one type of letter, folks in State's where no one has signed should get another.)

39. Good question
Hillary is my senator. I will email her and Chuck Schumer today ~

The fact that they have not already signed is disturbing. I believe they knew all along that we were being lied to. If we knew, how is it possible they did not?

Michael Smith, the reporter who published the memos, says that he got them over eight months ago and tried to get the US media interested in them. He failed to do so and it wasn't until bloggers got involved, that the press was forced to even mention them.

That means that our Media didn't just find out about them on May 1, as many of us did. They knew about them from the beginning. That's why they called them 'old news'. It was old to them. Shame on them!!

38. My one senator, Barbara Boxer
signed but then she has a spine! Here's my letter to my other senator, Diane Feinstein:

Dear Senator,

I would like to inquire as to why you have not
signed Senator Kerry's petition regarding investigating
the Downing Street Memos? I believe we've been lied
to by President Bush and have paid the ultimate costs
for it: over 1700 dead American soldiers and 100,000
Iraqi lives as well as billions of squandered taxpayer
dollars on this misadventure.

If you have not signed because you are afraid to
take a stand against this tyranical administration,
keep in mind you will have the voters of California to
worry about come next election. Democratic voting
taxpayers are tired of certain Democrat leaders showing no
backbone towards the wrongs perpetuated by the
Bush Administration.

In other words, DO YOUR JOB or LOSE YOUR JOB.

Ms. DU
