White House starts search for new justice

A small group of senior White House and administration officials has quietly interviewed some of the top candidates for any Supreme Court vacancy, said Republican sources with close ties to the White House.
The senior officials are said to include Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, who has been mentioned as a Supreme Court candidate; White House Counsel Harriet Miers, the president's longtime adviser and former personal attorney; White House Chief of Staff Andrew H. Card Jr.; and senior adviser Karl Rove.

However, the Christian Legal Society has been asked to provide its recommendations for a replacement for Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, 80, who has thyroid cancer. The group complied.

6. Is Rove a lawyer? I didn't know he had a legal background, but if he does
then he will, of course, be Bush's man.

I think we should all send in prayer requests that they get their heads out of their collective evangelical - prayerbooks - and take a look at the real world in the 21st Century instead of being stuck in some timewarped version.

9. Since when do Religious Groups
have "Advise and Consent" responsibilities that only duly-elected representitves of ALL the people are supposed to have?

This administration is a disgrace.

10. The pick is by the Federalist Society, pure and simple.......

Members of the Federalist Society play key roles in the White House and the Justice Department, including Attorney General John Ashcroft and Soliticitor General Ted Olson. According to one report, moreover, 17 to 20 of the first set of candidates interviewed for judgeships by the Administration's team were "directly recommended by the Federalist Society's Washington headquarters." And indeed, six of President Bush's first 11 nominees to the federal court of appeals have been members of the Federalist Society.
