Lee Greenwood's "Proud to be an American" -- Bootcamp Brainwashing |
|
I am curious whether this song is still being used today as a brainwashing tune. When I was in the NTC (Naval Training Center) Orlando (1989ish), they played this song when they 'cycled' us, and most memorably during the 'dead cockroach' position. That's where you lay on your back, throw your legs up about 6 inches from the ground, arms straight up, and chin tucked to chest. It gets extremely painful quite quickly.
I get flashbacks whenever Mike Malloy plays the song on his radio program. Has anyone else experienced this song during bootcamp?

I was there at Orlando Basic Traing during 1988 and LOATHE that Goddamn song. We had to sing it three or four times a day.
As an aside, did you ever attend the 'church' meetings on Sunday mornings?? It was the coolest damn church service I ever attended. It was an hour and a half with no CC's and nobody badmouthing you. Absolutely no lectruing or "preaching" at all. All I remember was that all of us recruits stood, sang, and danced to some of the coolest music. Much of it from The Beatles. With a few old timey religion songs like "Battlehymn of the Republic", or "Amazing Grace". God what an island of reason that hour and a half was under the stress of Boot Camp.

"Well I'm proud to be Un-American!" :spank:
I think anybody who has been in the military in the last 20 years or so has come to loathe that song.
