Money lapses causing damage to Democrats
BILL COTTERELL
As a team of forensic auditors began picking through the Florida Democratic Party's political and tax records Thursday, Gov. Jeb Bush said the once-dominant party has "gotten pathetic."
Former Democratic Party Chairman Scott Maddox, his campaign for governor clouded by a $200,000 IRS tab for unpaid Social Security and income-withholding taxes during his tenure, quickly responded that Bush has no room to talk about other politicians. Maddox said he took full responsibility for an employee's error that resulted in nonpayment of the taxes, and he said a discrepancy over $926,000 in party expenditures will be resolved "to the penny."

When asked about the controversy at a news conference, the governor said he was amazed by it.
"It's sad, and to be honest with you, the Democratic Party has gotten pathetic," Bush said. "I feel sad for rank-and-file Democrats who are expecting their leaders to do the basics - how could you not know that you haven't paid your FICA and Social Security taxes? I mean, hello?"
Maddox said, "Jeb Bush talking about anyone being responsible is laughable." He said the state technology office has had three directors, and high-ranking officials of the Department of Children and Families secretaries have been forced out for ethics lapses under Bush.
"The difference between Jeb Bush and me is I take responsibility for mistakes made on my watch," Maddox said. "An employee of the party made an honest mistake, and it did not come to my attention but I take responsibility for it - that's the difference between me and the governor."
