This is a roll call. I'm staying with Kucinich as my #1 until he drops out.

He is the person raising the issues of the next 8 years. Regardless of what happens to his candidacy this year, the longer he stays in, the more other people start to talk about DK's issues. And he stays in as long as his supporters stay with him.

Although I did not quite get the Edwards deal. I am also afraid that he will not make it to California so I won't be able to vote for him in the primaries.
It is unbelievable to me that he got so few votes in Iowa, and that he is so far down in the polls. People keep following the Media's bias, and call him weird. WEIRD? How dare the media call DK weird when we have a smirking whacko sociopath currently occupying the WH, that they call "strong" and "presidential" ?
Why is it always "weird" to make Peace to obtain Peace, when it is "normal" to supposedly wage war to make Peace. AAaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhh!!!
I also can't believe all the hoopla about Dean and his speech. If he wants to dance the hoky poky to entertain his followers, that's his business. This was not a policy speech or anything. Oh, why do I even bother listening to the radio or watching TV...(I have given up on CNN and MSNBC, though).

After FINALLY seeing him speak on C_SPAN this weekend.
I saw Clark, Dean, Kerry, Edwards and Lieberman (wanted to hear SHarpton too)
After hearing each give a ten minute or so stump speech in NH I returned to DK.
I am really upset at how the Media completely ignores Kucinich and SHarpton.

39??? According to CNN, Kucinich picked up zero delgates in Iowa (a testement to the brilliance of compromising his anti-war position for political purposes.) I'd be happy to correct myself if I'm in error, but I'll need a source other than a DU post. 61. Wrong. CNN can project national delegates, but... |
|
...the Iowa caucuses chose only county delegates, and county conventions will regroup behind whatever candidates are still in play on March 13.
CNN is wrong to announce "pledged" national delegates from Iowa.

the caucus televised live on C-SPAN. The Dean chairperson for that caucus promised the Kucinich supporters a delegate to the county if they'd help Dean get another delegate (she was short two supporters to get a second delegate, as I recall.) Was that legitimate? How could she give a delegate away if she needed votes to get a delegate?
NOBODY seemed to know what was up with that at the caucus.

63. Legitimate and commonplace |
|
I've heard and read about that televised caucus, but I never saw it.
That said, yes, the sort of deal-making you describe is not unusual at all. It's not only legal; it's expected and strategized and rehearsed.
In my caucus, a presidential preference group needed 10 for viability. I was in a Kucinich group of seven. Edwards had eight. Then one undecided went to Edwards, so they were only one short. We tried unsuccessfully to gain more members from anywhere else (Edwards needed only one!), but nobody else moved (after the last undecided went to Gephardt, making 11 for them), and time was running out. So at the last minute our two nonviable groups agreed that Kucinich would make Edwards viable in exchange for one of the two delegates we would be awarded. It was precisely the case envisioned in the limited "alliance" recommended by our candidate. Six of us opted for the deal, and one of ours went to Dean.

65. Further clarification |
|
In answer to your "why" I guess I didn't make it clear. In your example, both delegates would be reported as Dean's, but one of them would in fact be a Kucinich person who would be free to further DK's candidacy and agenda at the March 13 county convention, as well as work on convention committees right away, e.g., platform. So it's a win/win deal.
If you understand how this works, you understand why we Iowa Kucinich supporters are so sure there are many more of us than revealed in the official caucus results. We know we really are a significant chunk of the second-place Edwards position, and we are probably represented among county delegates for all the others.

60. Hey, Hey, All the Way With Dennis K.!!! |
|
That's my morning cheer for you! :donut:
I've been supporting Dennis all along, first getting interested in him because of his "A Prayer for America" speech in February 2002. I'd never heard of him before so I looked at his Congressional website and liked what I read.
I think he can win here in the South if people hear his message and vote for their own survival (their "pocketbooks") He and Edwards truly represent the working class, coming from working class families, labor union families. Even with his dad being a union man, Dennis and his six siblings grew up in poverty, having to move all the time, sometimes living in the family car because no one would rent to their large family, Dennis and some of the other kids being put in an orphanage at one point because their mother was suffering postpartum depression after the birth of one of the younger children and couldn't care for all of them. Those stories will resonate with a lot of people in the South and the rest of the country. I'd guess that most people in the country grew up knowing some kids who had it rough like that, or were such kids themselves, or can be thankful they never encountered that sort of life.
Dennis did janitorial work to pay for books when he was in parochial grade school, started caddying regularly when he was 12 (IIRC), later worked as a hospital orderly, a surgical assistant, and a cameraman -- and still belongs to the cameramen's union. THAT'S an impressive resume to me! Oh, yes, he was a city councilman at 22 (23?) and Mayor of Cleveland at 31, but I think everybody who's ever had to support themselves with blue collar (or pink collar) work, and no trust fund to fall back on, will appreciate being able to vote for someone who's done the same.
