Gonzales as CJ?
My dad was listening to Drudge (I know, I know), and said that Rehnquist will retire soon and Gonzales will be nominated to the Supreme Court.

Anyone else almost hoping that they do nominate him? Another Gonzales hearing, which will be well-publicized because of the Supreme Court nomination?

4. No, the worst guy would be Orrin Hatch
I know Hatch has been angling for this type of appointment from the beginning. Even his sudden appearance as a co-sponsor of the anti-lynching bill could be seen as convenient positioning. He may be a long shot but I wont be surprised if he makes the short list.

5. No, It Would Be John Ashcroft
And I don't put anything past Rove and Bush - they need to do something to try and show the Senate that they have the biggest penises in DC.

Of course, they are, but we're not talking about appendages.

2. I just heard today that the Fundies would fight against Gonzalez.
Because of his views on abortion and immigration and affirmative action.

3. I heard he's one of those under consideration, but not for the first
vacancy. I heard there is a list of 5 or 6, but I only heard 3 names mentioned.

Michael Ludig (sp)?
John Roberts
Alterto Conzalez

This was on cspan I think, and it was an interview with some reporter who covers the SCOTUS. If she knew any of the other names, she didn't mention them.

She also said that Gonzales would be considered way to moderate by the RW to be considered to replace Rhenquist. He would probably be held to replace someone like O'Connor.

I didn't write down where the first two judges are from, and I don't know anything about them.

6. I just found Judge John Roberts bio. WOW, is he extreme RW!!!
http://www.independentjudiciary.com/nominees/nominee.cfm?NomineeID=5

I tried to find Michael Ludig (Ludic, Ludik) but couldn't find anything. Obviously I'm spelling the name wrong.

That JUdge Roberts is a real winner! He's sounds like the RW dream candidate! Roe v Wade was a wrong decision, Dr's shouldn't tell their patients about a possibility of an abortion, Gov't has no authority to issue controls on the environment, etc.

Read his bio, if you can stand it! It's amaizing!

13. Gonzales is spanish for souter
I am not sure that Gonzales is as bad as Rehnquist. Some in the GOP fear that Gonzales will be a souter.

14. Neither Hatch or Asscroft will be considered
Both Hatch and Asscroft are too old. Bush will be looking for someone who will be on the Court for 20-30 years which means they must be around 50 years old this year. The top candidates are:

J. MICHAEL LUTTIG is a Federal appeals court judge from the 4th Circuit and is known as a sure fire right wing conservative. Bush’s father put him on the appeals court.

JOHN ROBERTS is an Appeals court judge for the D.C. circuit was considered one of the top appellate lawyers to argue before the Supreme Court. He was approved by the senate a couple years ago for the DC Circuit. He too is a conservative right wing judge, but lacks the paper trail of Luttig.

AWOL obviously likes Gonzales, but the right wing of the party does not. Gonzales is perceived to be more liberal on choice (based on a parental notification case in Texas) and affirmative action. The interesting side note about Gonzales is that he would have to recuse himself from cases coming before the SCOTUS where he was involved in the White House or as AG. This may really work against his appointment.

17. There would be nothing forcing him recuse himself
That's just what a decent and ethical person would do.

Qualities one is not likely to find in this administration.

15. Gonzales is not conservative enough to replace Rehnquist
The fundies would go nuts.

I could see him as a possible replacement for O'Connor. Some con commentator speculated that would happen on some Sunday show, and it seems to make sense to me.

16. He's a horrible choice for AG but Bush could certainly pick somebody worse
Edited on Mon Jun-27-05 01:55 AM by Idioteque
His record as a judge seems pretty moderate. the fundies hate him because he is pro-choice. I wouldn't filibuster him. If he's replacing Rehnquist, it would push the court a bit to the left.
