Will Cheney complete his term? Who would take his place? |
|
Here's the scenario I see playing out:
Cheney won't finish his term. He'll bow out because of his bad heart, possibly before the 2006 midterm elections so as not to be around when the disaster breaks.
That will give Bush the chance to appoint an heir apparent, which I don't think will be any of the Republicans currently considering running for president.
I'm thinking Rick Santorum.

double check... this has nothing to do with succession. the pres would be able to appoint anyone he wanted... Nixon picked Ford, who was minority leader in the house when agnew spity the bit; ford picked rockefeller.

7. If Cheney goes, I think Mr.bush can assign replacement, maybe |
|
Thinking back to Nixon/Agnew, when Agnew resigned, Nixon appointed Ford, knowing that he (Nixon) would be resigning. Can Mr.bush appoint someone else for vp? Line of succession is if pres dies, who is next in line for presidency, I believe. I'd be happy to have this clarified though.

17. I don't think it would be Graham.... |

One of Washington's worst kept secrets is that Mr. Graham lives in a closet, so to speak.

Colin Powell comes out of his brief retirement to take the VP slot.
If not him then Kay Bailey Hutchison.

18. That wouldn't make strategic sense. |
|
To put Powell in as VP.
Bush wants to be able to pick his successor, and this is the only way he can do that.

....just adding a new #02 to a very unpopular #01, won't mean jack shit by the time the campaign rolls around.
If anything, if the new #02 had any significant popularity going in, s/he can kiss that goodbye by the time the bus for Crawford rolls up to the Whitehouse.
That person would have to work major miracles in the time they stepped in for Cheney.
In other words, T.G.H. (Taint Gonna Happen) ;)

15. Cheney will leave after 2006 mid term elections |
|
I think that Cheney will leave sometime after teh 2006 mid term electons for health reasons. By then, Rove will have picked who he wants to back and that person will be VP. It could well be Frist.

But it's still going to be the KISS OF DEATH for whoever starts their '08 campaign having been part of "that" administration...

20. There's a very good chance this will happen and the new VP |

will be the heir-apparent to the throne. I haven't a real idea of who it might be because there are so many sets of lips planted firmly on his behind.

They would appoint a conservative senator who they wanted to take the reins for the 2008 nomination. Not Rice, she's a negro and will not pursue the presidency, believe it or not.

23. I'm starting to think the Cheney will run in 2008 |
|
if his health is OK. Otherwise, I think * will appoint Allen or Rice. Both would be difficult for the Senate to oppose.
