Clark ad running in Wisconsin advocates NATO in Iraq. . .
I know Clark's record with NATO and I am glad that this message has a multinational quality.

But, can someone explain to me how NATO has anymore credibility in Iraq than the US?

NATO in Afganistan might be explained sensu a NATO member (USA)was attacked from there.

Is the justification for European forces in Iraq the bringing of a NATO member (USA) into compliance with international sentiment, or is it just that Clark sees NATO as an option with which he is experienced? or perhaps something else?

2. Beat me to it
You're right, the world looks at NATO and the UN with more respect because they're not viewd as organizations who's sole purpose is to forward American interests. It will lend legitimacy to the rebuilding of Iraq without lending legitimacy to the war itself.

4. Well...I didn't imply it was...

my question is why NATO? Why not the UN or a coalition that involves nations of the region?

Ignoring the fact that NATO isn't much liking its clean-up role in Afghanistan, wouldn't an international coalition that includes more Muslim nations a better solution? Is it even possible to get a coalition of Muslim nations?

3. Listen carefuly - NATO-only for military. An international structure like
they had in Kosovo - NATO would help - but it wouldn't be NATO, nor UN per se:
Create a new international authority. The Coalition Provisional Authority, which is the American-led de facto government of Iraq, should be replaced. But the United Nations is neither able nor willing to assume the daunting task of governing Iraq. General Clark would create a new international structure to govern Iraq-the Iraqi Reconstruction and Democracy Council-similar to the one formed in Bosnia. The interim government would have representatives from the European Union, the United States, neighboring countries and others who support our efforts to build a democratic Iraq.

* Transform the military operation into a NATO operation.
