Telling WINGNUTS to FU*K Off!!! So. California Latinos STRIKE BACK
Edited on Mon Jun-27-05 07:33 PM by autorank
OK, so here’s the deal. The Latino/Latina community in LA put up an art work, “Danza Indigenas” near a major LA Metro Station. It had the words “It was better off before they came.” This was meant to depict what Mexican immigrants hear as racist slurs after they arrive the US. Well, a group called “Save Our State”, Wingnut and anti immigrant, is so stupid they thought the phrase “before they came” referred to “white people” and was therefore racist.

The Save our State people (Minutemen clones) announced a demonstration at the monument. 60 showed up. The Latino/Latina community heard about this and guess how many showed up to counter the Wingnuts, 600 peaceful demonstrators who were fed up with bullshit.

This is what we need to do everywhere. Californians counter Arnine S. in massive demonstrations. The public service unions have a “flying squad” that dispatches people where ever Arnie S. supporters collect signatures for his stupid special election.

This is inspirational and exciting. California is leading the way in the Velvet Revolution!!!

Immigration Protest in Baldwin Park Is Peaceful
LA Times 6/26/05

Sixty people from a Ventura County group (anti immigration Wingnuts) opposed to words on artwork at a Metrolink station are met by 600 counter-protesters.

By Wendy Thermos, Times Staff Writer
A face-off Saturday in Baldwin Park over illegal immigration, sparked by a piece of public art, was peaceful despite authorities' fears of violence.

Next to City Hall, where about 60 protesters opposed to illegal immigration waved signs and American flags, about 600 counter-protesters sang, danced, chanted and beat drums to promote tolerance.

"It's not a confrontational us-versus-them thing. It's to show unity," said counter-demonstrator Rosa Romero, 25, of Los Angeles, as she took a break from painting signs. "I'm here to show support for the community."

24. We ABSOLUTELY need to hit the streets. This, so far, is good but not
enough. Not NEARLY enough. And it has to spread across the country. It has to literally FORCE news coverage because it's happening everywhere.

Good but not good enough. We need FAR, FAR more than this.

Good for them and they did look very peaceful and proud.

One poster above is correct: We do need to do this don't we. Unfortunate for me, I live in an area that's deafly blind, willfully at that.

Good for CA!

And make sure "S" final line as he's leaving is "I won't be baauuck!"

First, California was "appropriated" from the hispanics; then Arnie and his buddies apropriated the state from everyone else.

The special election is the lab experiment for catching fraud. I'm sure that there will be many highly intelligent minds and sharp eyes watching their every step. Field can do an exit poll!!! haha...international observers.

When I visited Sacramento in the late 80's a major state official said, if the Mexican Americans would just organize, they'd be the power source in the state (it was no big deal, we were at a party and he was drunk). Well, look at the LA Mayor's race as the macro and this demonstration as the micro.

CA is rokken!

Edited on Mon Jun-27-05 10:03 PM by Joj Bush
The protest seems pretty racist itself, more racist than what they're counter-protesting.

She doesn't exactly look Native American to me. The great majority of them are clearly not Native American, so they are thieves of the land themselves by their definition.

And if they want to claim that the anti-immigration crowd are just racists, some of their signs should not be admitting that they're illegal. 85% of American are against illegal immigration so I don't see how they are helping any cause.

15. Illegal immigration?
Almost all of these people have passports!! This isn't about anything illegal like the bullshit you've been fed. These people are minority groups who are being persecuted just for being in the country, there is nothing illegal about living in the USA and owning a passport. Closing our borders doesn't include getting rid of all the colors.

Did you SEE OHIO in 2004? That was racism in action, and in every minority neighborhood, on every front, black people had no way to vote and were lied to. That's racism, and the DLC didn't give a shit. There's no exscuse for mixing minority racism with illegal immigration claims, and its appalling.

20. Yes they ARE.
Get your head out of fox news and read the official reports. They're stopping everyone they can based on the color of their skin, that's all the minuteman patrols are about. And they're getting even WORSE!

So stop insisting that this was just some benign, isolated case. Its happening all over California and Arnold created his own "special" law task force to deal with "immigrations".

21. LOL...a Minutemen supporter on DU. Congratulations.
You can start a sig group of one (1).

This thread is about people organizing to stand up to right wing extremists. If you want to defend Minutemen, fine, but they're certainly motivated by racism and these SOS folks are without much of a doubt.

It's happening everywhere, smaller groups (Minutemen, SOS) and larger groups (the Congressional Republicans), stupid groups (KKK) and intellectual groups (AEI and their "Bell Curve").

Wake up and smell the coffee. Anyone who stands up and fights the right wing is doing all Americans a favor.

28. You are confusing the issue. Minutemen are inspired by racism is the mssg
Do not make this about illegal/legal immigration because the issue is the racist impulse that motivates these people.

Can I prove they are racists? No, I cannot. As an American, though, I think I know my own people.

34. As a Latina I'm sad that you feel this way.
"She is at least part "white."" One thing you got to understand those so call Minutemen, KKK and etc.. don't see me or any other Latino/Latina as "white". Also the Indian some of us have is either Aztec or Mayan. Mine is Mayan which I'm very proud of, but of course I do have German, Spanish and African. Does this make me any less better then you or any other American? I don't think so. I'm very very Proud of my parents, because they grew up in Texas when it was against the law for them to speak Spanish in public but that didn't stop them and I'm glad because I was taught two different languages. The last thing I got to say I'm glad and proud to see my brothers and sister in Calf. going into the streets in getting into the face of those wackos who think that they are better then all of the rest of us Americans. Its time to stop hating one another and start learning from each other. :grouphug:

That said, the thread is about a bunch of really decent people who have had enough of Arnie's close the borders and some Wingnut group's threats. That's the utility of the thread.

I find the explanation of the inscription dubious... Occam's Razor and all that. And the statements on the people's banners in the photos tend to support a view of the inscription meaning "before Europeans came."

Thanks for posting, autorank.

31. You're welcome. Rallies are like DU, lots of people, lots of opinions.
The point is people all over CA are standing up, here at this rally, at any Arnie S rally there are huge crowds. all over the place. I predict this: if Arnie S tries to cheat in the special election in Nov (he already got rid of the DEM Secty of State), HE WILL GET CAUGHT. CA has some of the best election fraud/voting rights activists in the country (not surprising).

Everybody pull together, crush the Republicans, make it a real Golden State again, better than ever!

35. Thanks
We've been looking at it.

I was the first white guy to be elected president to one of the chartered MEChA Orgs back in the day. And, we both used to work for the UFW, I was an organizer for the grape boycott in San Diego back in the late 80's early 90's. We did such a great job we got to have an extended private sit and visit Cesar when he visited San Diego State in 1989. He then invited us to him home for dinner, which we attended the following year. We still do not eat grapes and tear up when we think of him.
