What do you guys think about taking a test before you are allowed to vote in the presidential election. Say, before you can cast a vote, you have to list the bill of rights and one role the president has enumerated in the constitution. Not too hard, but hard enough to make sure people who are voting have knowledge of the position they are voting for.
What is everyone's opinion on this?

Why does it suck? I understand that there would be a constitutional legitimacy value over this, but wouldn't this make voting more accurate, as the people who vote are now voting on the correct standards? Rather than vote on your bible or what Bill O'Reilly said last week in an interview, people now have to understand how the government works at least a little bit, and can make their own informed decisions. What part of that sucks?

How would it disenfranchise democrats when the typically more astute people are liberal? While the people who tend to vote more towards values are conseratives?

I completly agree that voter suppression is bad. That's why I don't really support this idea. What I think though is making more qualified decisions. That's the line I think voting should be pulled to, rather than making uninformed, value based judgements, people should be required to make fact, logical, and law based judgements. Here's the sad part, if a Mississipi Senator ran on the platform of making Christian prayer in public school mandatory, he would probably win. Now, I don't support not letting the people who would vote for the candidate to vote, but rather make them pass a test that recognizes the fact that there is a free excersize of religion in america.

It's unconstitutional on its face.

3. I think that folks should have to watch 1000 hours of c-span |

so thay can see how bills are debated (or not debated) how nominees are approved, hearings on unethical behaviour, and voted in the middle of the night.

Oh yea btw "literacy tests" were one of the ways that racist southern governments kept African Americans from voting for almost a century.

but literacy tests were use to disenfranchise african americans voting, who would a test of political intelligence disenfranchise? I understand this is not a feasible, or constitutional idea, and I don't support it...I'm just saying, what is wrong with it if you get people who are not informed, and not making the constitutionally correct or biased decisions out of the voting process?
