Here's what the press knew and when they knew it re: Iraq
In Feb 2002 Andrea Mitchell of NBC news was visiting the Redmond campus of MSNBC.com in WA state. During that visit she had a conversation with a relatively small number of MSNBC employees in which she told them the following (I'm paraphrasing, not quoting):

- The Bush admininstration would roll out war plans for Iraq in Aug of that year (she was off by a month, though they did make small mentions of it in Aug)

- Cheney pretty much runs things

- The press had been reduced to covering nothing but spin from the Bush WH. Asked why they didn't report that she said access would be cut off to reporters who suggested such a thing. The only way they could pull it off would be to band together and that probably wouldn't happen.

So, if you're really wondering why the press has ignored the DSM and other related info, it's because they knew about the same subjects discussed in the DSM long before any of you ever heard of the memo. It truly IS old news to them -- just not news they had the balls to report at that time.

2. The amount of collusion in this whole affair is quite amazing.
It shouldn't be, I suppose I was hopelessly naive for too long. Actually, willful ignorance is closer to the mark.

6. Not every fact has a link
My partner came home that night and told me about the conversation -- she even took notes. But it won't make any difference.

7. Was it an open meeting?

Not trying to change your partners decisions, but is there anyone else that would realize that it would be really important to the USA for the media to be exposed for what they are --"tools of the Bush Administration."

9. there were others there - yes
But who are you gonna tell? The press is hardly going to report on its own mendacity. It's not like Mitchell was the only one who knew this. They ALL knew and that is why they have no interest in the DSM.

21. Who? How about the same way the DSM got major attention finally? ....
IME there's a whole lot of PEOPLE power on the Internet. More and more people turn to the web for news and information. Through sites like DU, blogs, emails to reps/family/friends, Google words, Art As Protest internet auctions, websites, word of mouth, P2P demonstrations, etc there's a way to get information out that needs to get out to the masses sans the corp media.

12. Thats what I never understood either. Best as I can make
sense of it, they were afraid out being cut out of the tea parties and elbow rubbing insider club social scene far more than doing their jobs or getting hard news and investigative journalism that holds the administration to account.

11. LTRS, now that you bring this up, I recall at the time
she went on-air and reported words to this effect. It was during a regular evening news broadcast and she 'reported' this from the WH lawn if memory serves.

although it would be nice if a few whistleblowers came forward. But if even ordinary people knew, the odds of the press not knowing are next to zero, imo.

But what we do have confirmation of is that the press knew about the DSM eight months before we did. Michael Smith, in his article in the Sunday Times (UK) last Sunday, revealed that he tried to give them to the US press, eight months ago, but that they were 'not interested'.

In the article, he credits bloggers with forcing them, eight months later, after the press ignored them, into the news. Here's the article for anyone who missed it.

How the leaked documents questioning war emerged from 'Britain's Deep Throat

After reporting these secret memos, which revealed the dubious manoeuvrings of government, I expected the US press to react. Surely there would be a storm of anger over the way in which the American public had been deceived into going to war? But still there was no interest. Then slowly something astonishing happened. People power took over.

The Sunday Times website was inundated with ordinary US citizens wanting to read the minutes of the July meeting. Bloggers set to work passing the word. Six ordinary, patriotic citizens with no political axe to grind were so outraged to discover the truth about the path to war that they set up their own website, naming it after the minutes, which had become known as the Downing Street memo.

Nominated, because it's important to expose the full extent of the complicity of the press in the lies and the attempt to paint the memo/minutes when they finally did gain momentum in the news, as 'old news'. As we now know, that was the truth, because they knew about them eight months earlier, and still ignored them for five more weeks until ordinary citizens simply took over and did their job for them.

20. DSM was TRULY New NEWS to US, no thanks to MNCBC/NBC
And obviously other stations, with her mentions "they could pull it off would be to band together and that probably won't happen!"

What? The rich tube media talking-heads do something like band together to prevent massive deaths, massive US debts to our grandchildren, robbing of Americans's Treasury Social Security retirement monies and so on and so forth.

So glad I no longer watch these jokers, lamestream non-media whores.
