An electability argument
Edited on Sun Jan-25-04 03:37 PM by Bleachers7
OK, so I was just thinking about this. Clark aside on this one.

Kerry has been elected and reelected in MA 4-5 times. But how hard is it for a Democrat to get elected there? It is about 100% Dem (I know about the governor). They almost always vote Dem in the GE. Their Sentaors have been dems for at least 24 years. Kerry doesn't have any more significant FP experience than some others. He's been shot at, but so what. So have 1 million other american soldiers.

Dean has been elected and re-relected a few times in lily white liberal VT. VT is another place where it's almost impossible to lose as a Dem.

John Edwards. He was elected against all odds. He is a lifetime southerner. He has worked from the bottom up. He is likeable. He will not jack your taxes like Dean will. He is giving benefits to college kids (helps with the young vote).

I think this is a no-brainer. From these 3. John Edwards is the most electable.

3. Possibly
though Kerry had a very tough fight in MA against Weld. I've also heard quite a bit of talk that Edwards is giving up his Senate seat in NC because it might be hard to defend. Then again, there are those rumors that he'll run for governor there if he loses this race so who knows.

6. The Dem in the NC race is leading the polls right now...
...and the NC governor is a Democrat running for reelection, so there's no way Edwards is jumping in there.

So both of those rumors are entirely false.

4. He has more foreign policy experience than Dean.
Edited on Sun Jan-25-04 03:48 PM by HopeLives
18 years of service on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee

groundbreaking work on the Senate investigations into the Iran-Contra and BCCI scandals

Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs, Senator Kerry traveled frequently to Southeast Asia to investigate the fate of missing American soldiers, laying the groundwork for normalization of diplomatic and trade relations with Vietnam. He has continued to play a prominent role in formulating U.S. policy in the region in his role as ranking Democrat on the East Asian and Pacific Affairs Subcommittee.

He was also instrumental in facilitating the creation of the UN genocide tribunal in Cambodia, travelling to the country several times to mediate negotiation of its governing statute

A longtime supporter of the pro-democracy efforts of Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi, whom he has met with personally, Kerry recently co-sponsored bipartisan legislation imposing sanctions on that country’s military regime for detaining the activist and repressing her National League for Democracy party.

On edit: This wan't meant as an electability argument, just pointing out that Kerry does have more FP experience.

8. .....
Unfortunately, both of these men, Kerry and Edwards, are totally impotent in the arena of foreign policy since they both voted to support Bush in his.

5. On Dean:
"Dean has been elected and re-relected a few times in lily white liberal VT. VT is another place where it's almost impossible to lose as a Dem."

-Civil Union's bill.

7. Clinton never won NC. Neither did Gore. Edwards DID.
It *is* a no-brainer. That was one of the first reasons I looked at Edwards.

We could run a block of cheese and win MA...NY...NJ....

9. Vermont has a lot of Republicans
Edwards couldn't win NC in a re-election bid or in the general election.

I'm a Dean supporter, but I think Clark is the most "electable."
