Edited on Wed Jun-29-05 12:36 PM by tibbiit
I dont buy the faux news report that the soldiers were told NOT to applaud!

I dont buy it, I DONT BUY IT!

THat was the oddest part of the whole show!
People, when you talk to your wingnut friends emphasize the lack of applause.
Has bush lost the Military? Sure what it seemed like to us!

edit
I hope to see this point emphasized for days!
It strikes so many as odd and if you didnt see it, you wouldnt know from the pundit comments.

3. Yes, that was odd!
Plus, the few times the camera panned in on the younger troops, many of them had that "WTF am I doing here?" look on their face. Good thing they kept those folks toward the back.

4. CNN reported the same thing
That they were told not to applaud except at that one point and at the end. As I said last nigh, soldiers are a good audience for him because they can be ordered to respond appropriately

10. Thats just it, I dont buy what CNN or Faxu said about it
I dont believe they were ordered to applaud only at two points. I think the lack of applause surprised the shit out of cnn and faux and they made up this bs about being told NOT to applaud.
What about all the applause pauses bush made in his speech. The speech was short because he didnt have applause to slow it down.
I think a big deal should be made out of this.

Wolfie and Paula said: "The WH said to expect the speech to last 30 minutes, but I'm sure that it'll last longer, since there will be a lot of ovations, applauding and 'Hoo-ah's".

17. Hey, I remember hearing that SAME statement on CNN
Edited on Wed Jun-29-05 12:49 PM by ElectroPrincess
I was so bummed that C-SPAN 1 or 2 could not carry his speech. My daughter and I were all set up with cardboard print-outs of *bot bingo around 7:30 PM. We were complaining about these talking-heads -when I heard, I think Paula, gushing about the "applause breaks" which will extend the length of the speech. Yes, all outlets of the USA mass media aren't the "Corporate Media of Rove-Co." for nothing.

Also, watch the expressions on the younger troops faces. It tells all you need to know. They are using thoughtful restraint. He dare not have gone much longer than 30 minutes because even these "hand selected" soldiers can only tolerate so many lies from their so called Commander-In-Chief.

23. Good question
before the speach so we would know what to expect or after, when someone asked, why no ovations?

Uh - 'cause they were told not to.

Lame.

8. Sorry, it was announced before the speech that the military
audience is not supposed to applaud when being addressed by a superior officer--in this case the Commander in Chief ( I choke on that title ).

It's standard military protocol.

12. If its against the rules to applaud
Then why all the Hoohahs from the same audiences (at this and other bases)? They expected Hoohahs. The news media expected. If they announced there would be no applause before the speech, then they already knew he had lost the audience imo.

20. You referring to Paula Zahn and Wolf Blitzer before *'s speech?
Edited on Wed Jun-29-05 01:04 PM by ElectroPrincess
At least having to tolerate their blather, is more proof that this Executive Branch has a "strangle hold" on the USA media.

Shameful. Zahn and Blitzer were making me nauseous as true Bush-Co. cheerleaders. I only wish that I would have taped their statements about NUMEROUS breaks for applause.

Is nothing beneath these media whores?

18. I respectfully disagree ... In fact, in the past * was interrupted
SEVERAL times by hoots and cheers. Not before has this been "protocol" ... I don't buy it.

No, he is on his way out. Watch for the rats jumping ship because not even Genius Rove can orchestrate this man's comeback.

This is only the latest in a long line of speeches to the military -- this is the first silent one.

and he got total silence. I think that's why he appeared frightened during most of the speech.

16. See photo. That was commented on this morning's Dianne Reem Show
Edited on Wed Jun-29-05 12:51 PM by leveymg
Her NPR radio guest explained it away as because the subject was serious. So, only minimal applause. Sure.

Frankly, some of the servicemen behind Bush's right shoulder look like they were biting their lips and restraining themselves from physical violence. A live, network-televised fist to the kisser - what a perfectly fitting way to wipe the smirk off Shrub's face.

30. Did you ever see, "Suddenly, Last Summer"?
Early 1960s film adaptation of a Tennessee Williams play set on Corsica starring Elizabeth Taylor and her repressed gay brother/boyfriend?, Montgomery Clift.

It's implied in the film that the Clift character has a thing for local boys. Anyway, in the concluding scene Clift is pulled down into a grave by the upstretched arms of his pedophilia victims. That's sort of a metaphor for his plunge into guilt.

I kind of imagine that the troops turning on him would be an equally fitting fate for W.

21. But, with soldiers you can't even trust what you see
They are in the military, they could face hard dicsipline for violating their orders re; the speech, whatever those orders were. I'm sure there was also some type of filtering process for who went to the speech. It's like when soldiers are interviewed about Iraq, Gitmo etc., they are usually carefully screened and coached as to what they should and shouldn't say. It's only the ones who are now out of the military who can be fully honest about how they feel or what they've seen.

there is NOTHING they can do to discipline them...

If they were given orders then why did the networks expect hoo has and the rest?

26. Remember, Ft. Bragg is in Walter Jones's district! (Freedom Fries Rep.)
I think that Ft. Bragg's soldiers and families might have been the first to reach the tipping point in supporting Bush. Also I was thinking that Bush chose Ft. Bragg (named on the wall behind him during the speech) as a macho response to Walter Jones now opposing the war. I think he lost the duel.

Notice there weren't any elected Republican officials at the speech.
