Clark supporters, check in!
Edited on Sun Jan-25-04 04:23 PM by jchild
Don't be despondent. This is only the first primary--there will be many, many more.

Keep your chin up. Like Moore said, our party has been given a gift in Clark. I believe that.

As Gert Clark said, Wesley Clark had to be apolitical during his military career. When he came out of the military, she said, he chose the party with the values with which he most identified.

I believe that, and I think Clark's momentum will come in the next round of primaries--let's look forward to February and March.

:toast: to Clark!

I'd hardly call "Clark is DOA" support, Clark supporter(?); nor would I say that it takes into account the joyful randomness of politics.

Is Clark guaranteed the nomination? Competitive? Who knows?!? It ain't close to over until the money runs out.

Clark's campaign is just getting started, and this Tuesday, like last Monday, could change everything -- with a full week to go before the first primaries where any real expectations for Clark can be measured.

Edited on Sun Jan-25-04 09:11 PM by Foswia
I saw no challenge to my diction?

Clark has the presences in the states, yes, but a poor showing in NH will leave him with little or no momentum, Edwards and Kerry seem to be doing well in SC and unless something major happens they can win in sheer momentum. Yes Clark could win some states like OK and AZ, but he would still be out.

oh and yes we gave more money less than 12 hours ago, so don't tell me i am not a suppoter. As the subject line showed, i was annoyed, but i was still a supporter.

Perhaps you are a pessimist by nature but I am not. When I recall that mere weeks ago, Dean was the annointed unstoppable one I get a BIG smile. The truth of Clark's superior electibility will prevail.

I BELIEVE.

140. With Supporters Like This?
I think for someone who has never run for political office, the Gen is doing damn good. A 2nd or 3rd place showing over some who have been in politics for years would be pretty impressive. A 1st or 2nd place showing by those who live in NH's backyard is not a true measure of their support. But a 2nd or 3rd place for the Gen. could really show how great HIS support truly is. You have to consider the logistics. Of course a 4 star Gen. understands this.

I have firm faith in that Clark will be the nominee of our party

NH is pretty much meaningless. I would love for him to win it but a respectable showing is much more important.

I just gave to his campaign and this week, I'm going to be giving more. If I didn't believe in the General, I wouldn't be giving of my time and money to his campaign

It's not like our guy was once considered the national frontrunner, only to come in a distant third place in the first caucus.

Regular voters don't spend their days listening to the whores on cable news anyway. These slams won't sway the voters all that much.

I was telling my husband (a DK supporter) how it breaks my heart to watch the media bash him. He thinks that Clark will do fine through all of this and has been a great source of inspiration. He keeps reminding me the General can handle it.

I live in Illinois and hope I get a chance to vote for him. Historically, by the time we get to vote in the primary, the nominee has been "chosen".

I'm depressed as hell watching the media choose the nominee. The past 4 days has been horrendous and then this morning I get up and the FIRST poll I see is LIEBERMAN in 3rd place??? Come on! Please! Give me a break!
LIEBERMAN????? Oy Vey!

I want Wes Clark to be our president so bad and it's killing me watching the media hatchet job and I'm pissed as hell! :grr:

WE all know the truth about Wes Clark, but does Mr. and Mrs. Mid-America? I doubt they care enough to investigate it. They will vote for whoever CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, ect...tells them is the best choice. :(

Wes needs to head out of NH doing well to get the news coverage. He needs to make it impossible for the media to ignore him.

The rest of the US isn't aware of the situation. They don't know that the media is telling them how to vote.

You know though it is all for the best. I truly feel that Wes has done enough for the US. HE deserves to sit back and enjoy his wife, son, grandson and daughter-in-law. I honestly don't think we deserve to have Wes as our president. Yes, I'm saying Clark is too good for us.

Clark 10%
Edwards 9%
Lieberman 12%

149. The Gallup poll was the one that said in 2000.....
Bush would win the popular vote but perhaps lose the electoral vote, exactly reverse of what really happened. In addition it always polls support for G DUHbya higher than any other poll does.

I have very little regard for Gallup's accuracy.

Will work election day for Wes. Win or lose, Wes is saying the things no one else can to expose this Administration. No one else has the guts to make half of the charges Clark has made, or the standing to back them up. Clark is like an ice breaker, opening up paths of attack that all the Democrats can use against Bush. No way will I ever desert him. It has only been over the last week that a number of Democrats are finally waking up to how much the Republicans fear Clark. I think that sentiment will build if we keep defending him.

after the last debate I decided to vote for the General...he truly took a bullet for all of us at DU by not giving into the media whores during the Michael Moore question and distancing himself from Bush/Deserter ordeal. He has been slammed in the media for it (even though if the media would do its damn job they would see the truth) and probably has lost some points in the polls for it. He is a man of integrity and does not say things just to get the most votes like all the other candidates (except for Kucinich of course).

This is the first time that Wesley Clark has been on any ballot in any state anywhere. He has already won in many ways. 37. When Clark entered the race
We were hoping for a third in NH. Some polls show us in a dead heat for second and for me that would be a victory. Clark has the money and staff to keep going even if he comes in 3rd or even 4th in NH. February 3 is only a week and a half away. NH may give Kerry the momentum, but he's gonna have to cover alot more ground next week than he did this week. Clark has organization, money and is a formidable candidate in many of the Feb 3 states.

39. I have to admit that I have been a little down
I know he is a gift. I just hope enough other people realize it for us to have the opportunity to have his leadership. I also have to admit that my feelings are fueled by inexperience. I have never before been so involved in keeping up with what is going on.

Even though I am from Arkansas, I didn't care if Clinton won or lost. At the time, I was tired of Clinton - he had been our governor forever it seemed. I DO care if Wes wins or not. I feel like we are all missing a great opportunity if he doesn't. I can't help it - that's just the way I feel.

And, I keep hearing that he cannot win unless he resorts to the underhanded and sleazy tactics of other campaigns. I sincerely don't want that to be true.

40. I'm stickin' too
Nobody thought McCain would win New Hampshire so I haven't given up hope of a good showing there. It is daunting to be overcome by Joementum. }(

On a lighter note, my daughter's friend made us each a button of the General in his speedo and I put it on my coat. It's a great conversation starter. Guy down at Quik trip was like..."hey, who's the good lookin' guy?" I said, "That's Wesley Clark, our next president."

Now his response was "Yeah right" but at least I got his name out there. Just trying to have some fun here in the Heartland.

And now for all us supporters, I'm going to repost something I posted in another thread. It's a passage from A Christmas Carol. Dickens writes about Scrooge:

"He became as good a friend, as good a master and as good a man, as the good old city knew....Some people laughed to see the alteration in him, but he let them laugh, and little heeded them; for he was wise enough to know that nothing ever happened on this globe, for good, at which some people did not have their fill of laughter in the outset; and knowing that such as these would be blind anyway, he thought it was well that they should wrinkle up their eyes in grins, as have the malady in less attractive forms. His own heart laughed; and that was quite enough for him."

Just something to keep in mind when people deride Clark about being a born-again Democrat. As Dickens said 'nothing ever happened on this globe, for good, at which some people did not have their fill of laughter.' Let's be like Scrooge and be happy that we have found someone to make our hearts light.

Light hearts and peace to all.

42. Not in any camp.. but wanted to pass on a story
Peace loving pacifist mother... had only 'heard' about Clark, hadn't seen him or heard him and was instinctively wary.

We watched the last debates (NH) and she was impressed... and comfortable with him as the potential candidate (and initially she wasn't.)

She is also undecided (we are in a very late primary state ...), but believes that the more candidates on the ballot the better. She had agreed to get signatures for Kucinich (in Indiana there needs to be 500 signatures from each congressional district to get on the ballot.) Yesterday she ran into some Clark supporters at the post office who were collecting signatures. She told them she was doing the same for Kucinich - and would be happy to simultaneously solicit signatures for Clark. And now she is doing so.

I don't know that she would have proactively done this a week ago.

My point, is that for some longtime "peaceniks" - there is a little reflexive antipathy to the idea of a general as the democratic party nominee. But that Clark has the presence, and policies to alleviate concerns and win over some hearts and minds.

Thought this was the right thread to share this insight with you all.

And I think I've had my share of polls.

Anything can happen on Tuesday and we just don't know yet..no reason to get despondent.

One plus to the media underestimating us is that we have the opportunity to exceed expectation, I hope we do, but we'll have to wait and see. :)

50. Wes is doing fine...
he'll exceed the polls, especially with the recent news about Kay and Colin Powell. I expect to see a lot of surprised pundits on Wednesday!

Clark will get the mo' out of NH no matter what. He will survive his first primary just fine, and a lot of people will see him differently just because of that. After Clark wins a few states on Feb 3, I'll get to caucus for him here in WA along with a lot of excited people up here, Feb 7.

The first votes have not been cast (except for absentee), so how can we give up when the game hasn't been played.

Nobody thought the Florida Marlins would win either, we showed them!!

Keep on fighting fellow Clarkies, there's is another hill to be taken.

He was very clear that he's pro-choice and didn't give AWOL a pass, but didn't make it HIS issue, which it's not (it's AWOL's issue). Let AWOL explain what happened when he was missing in action for 18 months.

55. Here in Texas...
there is strong support for Clark. As many have said, "Our train is just leaving the station." We have been running a national campaign, and this is just the beginning. I made my fifth contribution last night, and I'm with Clark all the way.
I think the media this past week was out of control--on Dean *and* on Clark. From what I watched on C-Span yesterday and have read in first-person reports, the reality is quite different than the picture they paint. So....I expect pleasant surprises on Tuesday, and if not...this is only the beginning! We're very strong across Texas and the southwest.

This is the first time in my 41 year old life when I have felt that way. Well, I did love Jimmy Carter when I was a teenager and truly respected him. (I was never old enough to vote for him.) The trust and respect I have for President Carter has only grown.

Still, it's the only time in my voting life that I've had this passion and respect for a candidate, and we're so fortunate that General Clark made the decision to run.

Just stay away from network and cable news. They distort reality to try to shape public opinion. Put them on "ignore" for awhile.

But the latest C-Span rally with Clark looked terrific..so many people afterwards, & he always stays to talk to everyone.

So many people said "You have my vote." Majority of people also seemed inspired by him.

I read some of local nnewspapers, & it seems they are still having crowds so large, they can't handle the all. He'a also filling up large venues.

I've been upset about recent polls, but I'm still hoping for a good finish.

Please go look at this thread about Clark's American Indian support. American Indians are going to play a major role on the February 3 primaries, so you guys might be wise to learn more about the support from American Indians that he is receiving. This is a facet of his campaign that we need to continue to hilight.

Please read the links and respond to the thread so that we can keep it at the forefront of our Clark discussions.

Here's the thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=191995

Please help me keep this thread on the front page. It's a lot to read, but well worth it--issues raised in the thread will only heighten your appreciation of Clark's campaign. :toast:

110. Here's something we have to do
Please pay attention to the titles given to threads about Wes. We should talk about anything we want, but please consider the tone of your actual header. Many people on DU don't open a lot of the threads, but they all see all of the titles. The Thread title is the only impression of the content that many DU readers will ever get.

On a closely related note. Don't let Clark's opponents steal our good press by sticking a negative title to the thread where we begin talking about the content. A great example was the thread started called "Clark Disappoints on Meet The Press". That certainly wasn't my experience of how Clark did, but that is the message that got conveyed to many every time someone posted to that thread, and the thread got kicked up to the top of the page. That is why I started the "Clark Did Not Back Down on Meet The Press, Stayed in Total Control" thread. By posting to that thread, we keep a positive message up on the Board. I just added a small post to that thread now to bump it back onto the main page over the negative MTP thread started as a hit against Clark.

112. For the record
Edited on Sun Jan-25-04 10:24 PM by Tom Rinaldo
I sometimes get suspicious when people claiming to be Clark Supporters start threads making extremely pessimistic assessments of his chances in the title of that thread. There really is a coordinated Republican media effort this week to try to kill off Clark's candidacy through the NH vote. The hope is that if enough people can be convinced to think Clark has no chance, they will shift support elsewhere, thus creating a self fulfilling prophesy.

Kerry started tanking in NH, despite being a favorite son practically, when people stopped believing he had any real chance there. Don't play into that Repub. game plan here at DU regarding Clark.

115. I haven't gotten around to being a DU donor yet so...
My search functions are limited. I guess I just keep scraping together more money for Clark lol. But I gather it is possible to check past posting histories. A little bit of careful watching of who is claiming to be a Clark supporter feeling hopeless might be warranted though, especially when they start threads about it with that in the header. I am not saying true supporters might not do that, we are all riding on an emotional roller coaster. But if someone claiming to be a Clark backer does that type of thing and is not familiar to you as a Clark backer, I might wonder what type of posts they made previously about Clark.

119. Not too worried yet
With two New Englanders running, it's not that shocking that Clark isn't doing so well in NH. In retrospect, he probably would have done better in Iowa, but it was still a good strategy. Gephardt, favorite almost-son was supposed to challenge frontrunner Dean there..right? Things don't always turn out the way they're supposed to. The way things did turn out, it makes a lot of sense that the undecideds are going to Kerry in NH. Clark and Kerry would appeal to a lot of the same people and Kerry definitely has momentum. The south will be a very different story. I guess that's when I'll start getting nervous.

Clark has a lot to learn, and it sometimes shows. He just does not have the rhetorical skills of Kerry and Dean.

Also, if Kerry is overexposed in his current media bubble, the voters in the larger, later primaries may look to Clark, especially if Clark's chops are better and he gets a few new riffs, and more importantly, has money at the end. The big states are at the end.

124. Clark's rawness is what I like most about him
He isn't a skilled politician, I will give him that. That is an ASSET if you ask me!

His brutal honesty with all folks, including the pro-lifer who approached him in Nashua is one of the characteristics I adore about him.

No one can doubt his sincerity. He speaks from the heart!

129. Josh Marshall said today
"If I’d expected to glean some clear message from the differences between the intensity and numbers and passion at the Edwards and Clark rallies, it didn’t turn out that way. Each was very different. Edwards is a bit like a high school rally: fun, loud, clean, exuberance, well-drilled. Clark’s event had no less intensity, but it was a bit more rough-edged, grittier somehow."

Talking Points Memo

I think it is a true assessment. I'm all for grit. :smoke:

125. Rough Patch But the 2/3 Primaries Are Looking Good
The Kerry and Edwards effect from Iowa mixed in with the mugging in the debate last week really (particularly the mugging) really cracked a blow to our campaign in New Hampshire.

The three day tracking polls out today (from American Research Group, I feel they do the best job of the major pollsters) place Wes Clark within the margin of error for anywhere from 2nd to 4th in New Hampshire along with Dr. Dean and Senator Edwards.

Additionally the situation looks the same in South Carolina; in play for anywhere between 2nd to 4th with Edwards having a monster rally in his backyard state since Iowa. In play for 1st thru 3rd in Oklahoma and 1st or 2nd in Arizona. All three 2/3 primaries mentioned here still have significant undecideds as well.

Now, having said that, all these are pre-New Hampshire decision. I think we'll gain some ground though not a lot with a 3rd in New Hampshire, in other words we'll shore up OK and AZ . I am nervous about what might transpire with a 4th.

Does anyone know where I could find some recent tracking polls for New Mexico, Delaware. Missouri, North Dakota, and Virginia? Does anyone even release tracking polls for these other 2/3 primaries on a non-per-pay basis?

If you see a Clark supporter without a star, consider making a donation to DU for him or her so that that person can enjoy the benefits of DU membership, like search and so forth.

By the way, I haven't heard from ForrestGump in months, and he was my biggest stop-smoking supporter. I think news of my failure sent him off the deep end. LOL!

Actually, I have an appointment with my physician this month--he's going to help me with a cessation strategy, which may include a prescription med.

At any rate, I hate that I am a smoker. Absolutely hate it!

But I appreciate your kind words--and the fact that you remembered that about me!

and January 13th was my 12th year not smoking. So I know exactly where you are at and don't get down on yourself. You will do this..it goes in stages of finally accepting you want to be smokefree and your doctor may have something for you to help.

I used the patch...but you will be there, the making up your mind and wanting to, you will for your family and yourself, so I'm encouraging you, you will do it!

147. I'm not despondent at all
but thanks for the encouraging words anyway. :toast:

I never expected a high placement in NH and would be thrilled with 3rd. A respectable 3rd place finish for him is all he really needs there anyway. I wouldn't even be crushed by a close 4th place showing either. While everyone else was concentrating on Iowa and Clark had the run of NH virtually to himself for a little while, I had expected his numbers to rise then... and I also expected them to fall once Iowa was over and the spotlight went back to NH. Being from the south and not playing in Iowa, I'm actually pretty impressed with the NH polls for him. In fact, after Kerry's win in Iowa I had assumed he'd get a lot more of a beating in the NH polls at this point... so he's actually doing better there then I had expected after Iowa.

159. not a clark fan
I am not a fan (which is a derivative of the word fanatic) . I have never seen a person in politics so honest as Wes Clark. I can see why he was such a good commander of his troops, and how he inspires such dedication in people. I hope his mannerisms and ideals influence how all americans behave. The me first attitude has ruined the fiber of our country. We rape eachother more, kill eachother more, rob each other more and feel more justified being violent and uncaring towards one another. How can we ever expect to evolve as a species if we continue on this path? Now there are a few dinosaurs like me out there, that actually care about other human beings. However that is not the vast majority. I recognize a kindred spirit in this regard, in Wes Clark. He is honor and integrity in a time when that is a position that needs defending. I will defend him and pay him back with the same respect he gives other human beings. I guess that's it in a nutshell.

Just a one-time re-appearance to chime in with the good vibes here, before I go back to the blog.

We got this far, we're going to see him through Super Toosday, and the General is going to kick some serious professional politician ass!

Third place tomorrow will be more than peachy for me. The work is only beginning folks, check out the polls in AK, OK and AZ: that's where we need to move a mountain or two - and we shall.

Until Wes Clark's nomination - when I hope to post once more, but in the celebration thread!

Read y'all later...
