John and Teresa Kerry on 60 Minutes - CBS- TONIGHT - 7pmEST
Kerry Fires Back at Clark

CBS) Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry responded to a military rank-pulling comment aimed at him by rival Democratic presidential contender Wesley Clark by calling Clark, a retired general, "dismissive of lieutenants."

The retort came in a 60 Minutes interview to be broadcast Sunday, Jan. 25 (7:00-8:00PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. (The full transcript is below.)

6. 60 minutes, good move by Kerry
Assuming the interviewer does not mention Cape Wind, ask about how tax accountants may have helped them over the years or ask if Teresa Kerry is aware of the fuel consumption of her private jet over the last decade then Kerry should shine with this interview.

Cape Wind and fuel consumption are minor things, but it shall be interesting to see if over time a call is made to find out about their tax planning. I'm hoping they have been paying their fair share without using any crazy tax shelters. But when you're worth got $500 million, you'll have tons of would be advisers that can lead you astray.

Edited on Sun Jan-25-04 07:18 PM by David Zephyr
I'm impressed at how much John Kerry is influenced by Howard Dean.

To hear him on the stump lately, you'd swear he voted against the the War Resolution and the Patriot Act. Except, that is down in the South where he surrogates are making sure that voters there know that he DID vote for the War.

And now, following the sitdown interview by Howard and Judith Steinberg, here comes the John and Teresa show.

Now Teresa will wanna be a doctor. Basically infering that she will copy Judy Dean. They are both great women, I just disagree about their husbands, I prefer John Kerry to Howard Dean for my personal reasons, and you can have your reasons. We cant let ourselves be divided, we really cant.

26. I think you are oversimplifying
Edited on Sun Jan-25-04 08:14 PM by emulatorloo
The message of Howard Dean is the mainstream message of the Democratic Party, so there are a lot of similarities between what they say. Of course there are differences, but it would be strange if there were extreme differences.

As to IWR and Patriot Act, you know that those are complicated issues that aren't well served by a Black and White Bumpersticker Approach.

That kind of oversimplification of complex issues has been used for a long time by the right to kill genuine discussion, and it distresses me to see it used more and more at DU.

I have followed your posts for a long time now, since I started lurking on DU last year, and I know you to be a very very intelligent person. I know that if you were to dig into these issues you would find that there is less difference on the principles that underline Kerry's stance on the IWR and the positions of General Clark and Governor Dean. DK is another story of course, and his position is an alternative to the positions of Kerry, Clark and Dean.

You also know that it is not uncommon for there to be television interviews with Presidential candidates and their wives, yet you suggest the Senator Kerry and his wife are "copying Dean" by the phrasing of your last sentence. Do you really believe that Governor Dean innovated the husband/wife interview?

On edit - post title, spelling (but I am sure I didn't get em all!)

23. But, did the IWR require anything of Bushco?
I keep hearing Kerry explain, alternately, that he didn't vote to give Bush the right to go to war a) without UN approval, b) without a strong coalition, c) without an imminent threat against the U.S., d) without a plan to win the peace, etc., etc. But did the IWR require that Bush and his ilk do anything before starting a war? If I remember correctly it pretty much was the blank check that Kerry now says he would never have authorized. Did he read what he voted for or am I missing something in the resolution? Because it sure sounds like Kerry has done little more than create an excuse for his vote that isn't supported by the facts. I agree that it sounds good, but I have difficulty believing that is what he was thinking when he voted in the affirmative for the IWR.

17. He really nailed this interview
What a great interview.. all the clips from his youth .. Vietnam, testifying in the Senate, the Safir interview where he asked Kerry if he wanted to be President ("of the United States?").

He was really decisive, made sense, sounded smart and tough as hell.. hopefully NH is watching .. this should seal the deal.

18. This interview made me realize what it is about Kerry that turns me off...
He peaked too early in life. He was a courageous, idealistic young man who did some great things. As a young man he thought he could change the world--he was angry and optimistic. He still holds the same beliefs, but as he has gotten older he has lost his idealism, resigning himself that sometimes you have to make a deal with the devil to survive. That's why he never seems to have his heart in it, as he most certainly did when he was young. Some may see it as just maturity, but I don't.

Howard Dean, on the other hand, is still like the young John Kerry--pissed off and with a strong optimism that things can, and should, be better, and a refusal to accept otherwise.

21. Anyone else notice when Teresa Heinz Kerry said her job on the campaign
trail is to "keep him honest"... found that an odd quote.

Additionally, his southern strategy is exactly as Dean's was. Imagine that.

He totally co-opted Dean's message for his own. :eyes:

I think he is a basically good guy, but he's a go with the flow Democrat. Not leadership material.

22. I wrote a graduate paper on Teresa Heinz and the Heinz philanthropies
I became a great fan of Teresa Heinz then, and I still remain a big fan of hers.

She is not a politician, and she has never played the traditional politician's wife. When her husband John Heinz ran for political office, Teresa chose to be a wife and a mother. After her husband's tragic death, Teresa turned down those GOP politicians that wanted her to run for her husband's seat.

Teresa Heinz always shunned the political life because as she said in a 1995 magazine interview, politics is "the graveyard of real ideas and the birthplace of empty promises."

I reject this "First Lady" nonsense! I cannot believe that Americans are still attached to this sexist bullshit role that they expect a President's spouse to take. If we had a woman President, Americans would not be expecting the "First Mate" to be lobotomized like the "First Lady" would have been.

Let's grow up and bury the remnants of sexism!

curious

Also her ties to Enron are iffy from what I understand. I do resent the thread that discusses her being likable or not. :eyes:

I think don't think Women should have any greater pressure to be *nice* then men. I can't see that subject coming up when discussing a man. We should be talking substance and issues period.

38. Well, look what happened to Dean without his wife. Too easy to believe the
hype and that you're the greatest thing on earth when noone is telling you that you're going overboard here and there.

THAT is what Teresa meant by honest. Honest about who he is and what he wants to accomplish and not to lose sight of that.

She's very spiritual like that. It's not an act.

To keep his ego from blowing out of proportion. Teresa just admits that sometimes things go to people's heads and has also said other times people allow things to get them down. She tries to be that honest sounding board. And she's honest enough to come right out and say so.

29. This is a common phrase
and basically means to help keep someone's feet on the ground. To keep it real, to keep in touch with themselves.

If someone made a big deal out of a similar common phrase that Mrs, Dean used, you would probably be up in arms about it.

If you were drowning in the swamp and Lt. Kerry turned the boat around and came back for you under heavy fire while getting his butt shot off, would you consider him leadership material?

The Republican he saved evidently thinks so.

JFK was the richest president in our history, and his bond with the common person was strong. So was FDR whose family was quite wealthy. You know--the New Deal guy who transformed government's responsibilities to the average American.

Please stop stereotyping.

40. I don't like Kerry's wife at all
She acts like she is off in space or something.

I don't see the "WONDERFUL" that Kerry's supporters see. Now, T.H. Kerry appeards aloof and she seems like the type of person that says, "OH, I LOVE 'THE HELP' BECAUSE THEY MAKE MY LIFE SO MUCH EASIER."

She seems like she doesn't have a clue, so I don't see what you all see in her.

I, once again, agree with the entire panel on the Chris Matthews show, when they said today that Elizabeth Edwards is by far the best potential first lady.

Elizabeth is FOUR YEARS OLDER than Senator Edwards (she's 54 and he's 50), but she is absolutely brilliant. Did you all see her on C-Span yesterday answering questions? She could be running for the Senate right now, or be a White House advisor.

SHE IS BRILLIANT!!!

But, I don't see the fascination with T.H. Kerry. She seems distant, clueless, and "WHO CARES-ISH".

Like I have constantly said.

If I have already said something and then someone IN THE MEDIA SAYS THE SAME THING, I'm not stupid enough to say, "Ohhhhh, I hate the media. They said the same thing that I have been saying, and since they have, let me change what I have been saying."

Bottom line is, I have been saying what I have about Elizabeth Edwards and Teresa Heinz Kerry for a long time, so when the media agrees with what I have been saying then SO BE IT.

I could care less about who's "SHOW" it is said on.

On to things that MATTER - she is brillant and she would not have been attracted to a dude - pig. She could be running for anything she wants - but she is running as JFK's wife and partner and first lady. You go girl!
