I haven't seen anything about the reason for the bombing is the Olympics
I haven't seen a post (maybe I missed it) that is speculating that this is about the Olympics. London just received the award to host the Olympics yesterday. I am speculating that these terrorist are doing so to force more financial and military attention towards England itself and not internationally.

Just my 2 cent speculation.

2. I think it's the G8 summit
London being awarded the 2012 Olympics was only announced yesterday. These blasts had to be planned for a while before that.

16. Not "random" at all. The blasts occured within minutes of each other and
were located on crowded trains during the morning rush hour. The only apparently "random" explosion may have been the bus blast - and that may have been an accident - the bomber could have gotten stuck in traffic on his way to the train station. It is even possible that the bombs were all detonated by one individual after being placed in different locations by accomplices.

though they wouldn't be prime suspects. There is motive.

5. There's definitely been discussion of it
Mostly, it's being dismissed because it would be hard to organize something on that scale in every city that might have been a host, since the announcement was only made yesterday. I had the same thought, initially, but it makes more sense that it's related to the G8.

6. There have been quite a few posts about it. I doubt it's related, though.
These attacks were obviously orchestrated. It takes a little longer than one day to organize something like this.

8. It would have to be a big operation...
Edited on Thu Jul-07-05 10:19 AM by DakotaDemocrat
...since Paris was a media front-runner, so your thought about hitting the site of the Olympics after the announcement would have to include a Paris operation as well...

Highly unlikely, but its so early...

In addition, the British have known for some time that they were a target, and something was going to happen...They've been saying this on British radio all day, "We've known this was going to happen..."

9. I don't think it's related as there was not enough time
This was too well-coordinated. It had to take weeks if not months of planning.

London was a long-shot to get the bid.

G-8 makes much more sense.

11. I don't get it, what makes everyone think this was well-coordinated?
Four guys, each with bomb, you tell each of the guys where to go and tell them to detonate at approximately from 9 AM to 10 AM at a time where there will be maximum damage and loss of life.

Took one sentence for me to descibe that. This was not planned.

25. I can describe the 9-11 attacks in one sentence also. Nineteen Saudis
hijacked four airplanes and flew two of them into the WTC towers in NYC and one into the Pentagon while one crashed in PA. What did I just prove? Nothing. Or are you saying 9-11 didn't require any advanced planning either?

27. WTF? Are you serious?
Apples and Oranges. Obtaining bombs, and sending 4 guys to their locations and bombing is far less complicated than learning how to fly, sneak weapons (box-cutters) on the plane, guarantee that planes have fuel, learn how to fight in enclosed spaces, determining the best points to hit a building, etc, etc.

Cmon. What was that?

29. I was commenting on the absurdity of the "one sentence" thing. Sometimes
one has to say something "off the wall" to point out how silly something is. Guess it didn't work.

10. Not likely. An attack of this magnitude needs advance planning. The
Olympic announcement only came out yesterday. Most likely the attack was intended to coincide with the opening of the G8 Summit in Scotland, which has been scheduled for some time. Added advantage that Bush and other world leaders would be at the Summit. Al Quaeda knows that the security would be too tight to hit the actual Summit so they went for the next best thing....London.

14. disagree on the advanced planning...
...because this was not an advanced operation. Four guys with bombs, drive to a location, and detonate. There is nothing advanced about it.

21. It is one thing to set off a bomb. It is another to set off 4 bombs
nearly at the same time at the right locations to inflict maximum damage. It is not nearly as simple as you say. The bomb on the bus was probably a slip up. It was probably supposed to go off on a train. I suspect the accomplice got held up in traffic and that one person detonated the bombs all at approximately the same time, probably with a cell phone.

18. Nope
Why? How complicated could it be sending 4 guys out to bomb between 9AM - 10AM. Tell them where to go and detonate where damage would be the greatest.

24. I really don't think so.
Perhaps the acquisition of the bombs will take time. Even finding a few people to do it will take time. But that's all for preparation. This was a go and bomb operation, nothing complicated about it.

8:51 8:56 9:17 9:47 aren't all in the same vicinity so there is not a pattern. The leader just said, you here, you here, and we bomb anywhere from 8:30 to 10:00, and bomb where there are a lot of people.

This isn't organized like 9/11.

26. No way. Do you think there wasn't ANY security on those trains when
there is a G8 Summit going on in Scotland? And after 9-11 and the Madrid train bombings? London had higher security before 9-11 than the U.S has now. It is not that simple. People had to check out the tube system ahead of time at different times during the day to know where and when to strike. Materials to make bombs and detonaters had to be procured and then the bombs assembled and prepositioned where they could be accessed quickly. All this has to be done while Scotland Yard is looking out for anyone making suspicious purchases or movements. The best way to avoid scrutiny is to do things incrementally over a long period of time. The targets and dates must be identified so assembled bombs aren't stored for any longer than they have to near the planned attack. A slip up might give away the whole scheme.

19. Impossible
This was a well-coordinated attack - no way it could have been planned and executed in the less than 24 hours since that announcement.

This was timed to coincide with the start of the G8 summit to get maximum publicity while foreign leaders were in Britain.

23. Former PM - but yes, it is possible he was a target. More likely, they
didn't know he was there. It's London. There is a big summit going on in Scotland. Important people are going to be around. The blasts were directed at the G8 Summit, imo.
