Some right winger posted this on another board: |
|
"This is a sad reminder that there are organized people who want to kill you. Not for what you do, or what you believe, but simply for who you are.
I feel very sorry for the families and friends of those who were killed, injured, and traumatized by the bombings."
*******
As a moderator of this other board, I'd to respond that he's politicizing this tragedy that occured in London this morning, but am unsure whether to further exacerbate others' sensitive feelings at this time (we have many british people on the board). And besides he'd probrably take that as an opportunity to be disruptive.. Not sure what to do, any suggestions?..

3. It doesn't seem to be politicizing the attack to me |

Just a recognition that we have enemies.

6. I'd point out the hypocrisy of the statement ... |
|
..."Not for what you do, or what you believe, but simply for who you are...."
How many Freeptards want to bomb Iraq (and everyone in it) back to the stoneage simply because they're there ??/
But I digress ...

7. I don't see anything untrue or objectionable in those statements |
|
What do you take issue with?
Even wingnuts can feel bad about seeing other people injured or killed in a clearly well-organized hate attack.

20. Well, I basically take issue with: |
|
His part of the statement " but simply for who you are." because it implies that there are terrorists out to kill us simply for who we are, negating the factors that are the motive--which is vengeance for their perception of policies and actions of those who set government policy. Not that terrorist killings are justified in any shape or form--but his statement is a furthering of the bush-no accountability philosophy imo. I know that poster well; he's a huge bush-supporter fristian.

10. but it IS about "what we do" |
|
these attacks happen because of things that are done are perceived to have been done to the attackers countries, countrymen or beliefs. i am not defending these type of attacks on civilians. i have always thought that we need to try to understand why these people feel the need to do things like this. that is the only way we can try to stop or lessen these type of attacks.

13. I agree with you...I think he's trying to co-opt the sympathy thread.. |
|
to imply otherwise.. That's why I don't know whether to let it stay there unanswered--but then that would play into his game of instigating politics out of this..

Attacks on the public are because they are who they are, who they represent as a group. I do not think that every person hurt or killed today was hurt or killed because of their personal beliefs, but because they represented a larger group, say "English public".
If it is part of a larger nasty rant, ban. If it is a reminder that people will do bad things to other people because of who they are, as a symbol, sounds like a valid point. It all depends on the context.

opinion. Indeed "the just war" is not bought by many - and in this case I am not hearing about suicide bombers
so I suspect all that are in the game to change opinion - from our own CIA to Bush folks to muslim terrorists to the IRA (EXCEPT THE IRA always warn a few minutes before - and that did not happen this time)
4 million folks die a day - but this does not make this less a tragedy. But again 4 million die each day, so to go politicizing this as battle of Bush viewpoint against all "not with Bush" is pretty tacky. But tacky is expected of those on the right and their media lapdogs.

and hate all over the world, including in America. But to prevent more innocent deaths (in Iraq and in acts of terror) we (the U.S. and U.K.) have got to change our foreign policies, because even though the government is spinning that "the war on terror" has made the world a safer place, this OBVIOUSLY is NOT TRUE. The policies of our governments (the "war") have made the world an unsafer place, by creating more frustration and hate.
My heart bleeds for those hurt and killed, I am sick. I pray for them and their families, and hope that more terrorist acts may be prevented.

19. Hmm - I'm not sure how or if you should respond, |
|
but I've gotta jump in here and say that that right-winger is an idiot. What he/she said sounds like something that would come out of Bush's mouth, a load of crap, because it's completely back-assward. No one wants to kill us "simply for who you are". They do, however, want to harm us because of the mess George W. Bush, the Preznit, has dropped us right smack in the middle of. Those "organized people" want to kill us because of him.
I apologize in advance to any DUers today if I come on too strongly, but my shock is wearing off and I'm angry. My husband was at Kings Cross station yesterday during rush hour and would have been getting off a train and on to the Underground there today around the time the bombs went off had his meeting in London not been cancelled last night. Missed it by a day. I can't stop thinking about the people who weren't so lucky today, and how closely my husband missed being one of them. I can't stop thinking about my friends in London that I still haven't been able to get in touch with.
George Bush bears ultimate responsibility for this. Tony Blair to a lesser extent, but it's George W. Bush's ego and hubris that started it all.

I don't think most people on that board (we have alot from the london area) have the stomach at this time for a political debate that would spring from my criticism of him.
